Thank you for sharing! You've got stamina and heart. That is an absolute gem of a framing detail. Great Architectural Find Lady!!!
I've been to the Ashrama a few times over the years. Even spent the night there once (I heard there were a couple of guys who heroically spent a whole winter there once many years ago). Franklin Merrell-Wolff was an interesting guy, a Harvard and Stanford educated mathematician and philosopher - not your typical spiritual guru type. His most famous book is The Philosophy of Consciousness Without an Object.
Aye, they were conscious of all these middle class white women who could be "manipulated" ( euphemism ! ) in to doing pretty much what these quacks wanted. Like everything, the truth rears it's ugly head, in the end.
That little Ashram could make a nice camping spot, especially with that fireplace....
Sarah, you are one brave woman. Crossing that mess of a creek, no trail, by yourself! Wow.
That was a great video, Sarah. The scenery was spectacular.
If people didn't know that Ashram was there they'd probably never even see it. It blends in real well with the environment.
This may be your best video to date; just think of all the love that went into making that building!
I saw, I clicked!
The "real treasure" is You . Taking us on all these special jaunts, and THIS ONE WAS PHENOMENAL!
What a beautiful place and the spirit of peace and love still surrounds it
☮️💜
How beautifully built it us.
I am amazed at the most interesting destinations you find to share with us. Seems like the western US has unlimited places to discover! Love your posts!👍🤪
it does...I'm a nomad in western states and I'm stuck in the east with a medical issue this summer and I cannot believe how played out and boring the east and Midwest are in comparison!
Not JUST the West..there's places like this from coast to coast actually... I've been to only about 30 states..each one as unique and beautiful as the last...I wish I was young enough to go to some of the places Sarah goes to.
@@MsQ275They have the White Mountains way up in New Hampshire 😅
@lorrie 5881 , thanks for the thought of home. born, raised in Franklin, NH . lots of white snow.❄️🏔️🦞⛄⛷️⛸️💨
I've been there! The view from the 'back porch', looking up towards the crest of the Sierra is stupendous, and the whole place is a wonder. Too bad the bridge and trail got washed out. Thank you for this terrific video!
Cool segment on the ashram,I was lucky enough to see back in 1989, and the road was in much better shape, thanks wonderhussy 🎉! great is the only word to explain, your sharing 🇺🇲 this experiences!!👍
Wonderhussy, I love your sense of humor and your expeditions are amazing. Thanks for doing what you do!
husband speaking age 80 I am seriously impressed at your stamina to make that hike.
Sandy here: Excellent video Sarah, I have hiked in that area and it is both special and spiritual. Thank you for taking me along, such a hike is (sadly) no longer possible for me. Hikes like this recharge your 'spiritual battery".
Stay safe and have fun. ❤❤ Sandy
You have already found your greatest treasure. You have found your SELF, and what you love to do. And your good at it.
That is amazing. That wood all seems to be redwood. All those walls are cast concrete. The pieces of wood probably were used to help support the concrete when it was drying. What a project! Great video! Thanks!
I had a crazy aunt that got into one of those ashram swammies and was fleeced out of hundreds of thousands of dollars. Everyone in the family tried to warn her but she went a little crazy when her husband passed away and became very vulnerable and wouldn't listen to us.
WONDERHUSSY definitely showed she was not a wussy on this episode, gained a whole new respect for Sarah.
Wow that’s really dangerous for her to be there alone. Not a good plan!
@@gracieg7601 not if you're packin ;)
I've been there a couple times. Spent the night once with about twenty people. In fact, it was June 28, 1992.... when the 7.3 quake down in Palm Springs hit and woke me up! Many people slept through it, but a few of us notice the quake.
Did she cross the raging river? I’m about to find out!😂
What you see poking through the walls was where they had forms for pouring concrete. Once the concrete dried they’d pull away the forms and leave the attached part of the form.
Good job Sarah! You overcame your fears making it even more spiritual! 😊
This was an awesome place,so glad you crossed the raging rapids. Beautiful and peaceful.
Interesting place! Someone should at least put in some window panes and doors to enclose the building.
Awesome! This is all so close to me....wow.❤😂 i couldn't help but think about John Muir witnessing a huge earthquake in the Sierras at night and him describing the light show the granite rocks moving against themselves showed during the quake. They do spark easy. That must have been a sight!
We witness rockfall while climbing Whitney at 3-4AM. It was across a small valley on the backside, above Guitar Lake. It was terrifying because you could hear it but couldn't exactly pinpoint it. Then across the valley, maybe a mile away, we could see the sparks. An amazing sight, indeed.
Sarah, you have such a positive attitude, all the while delivering this video to me and others. Thank you so very much for taking me along.
John❤
I feel the same way
That was the Forest Service in the 1920's. The agency was only 25 years in existence. Rules and regulations were few and simple which could be carried by a Ranger in their back pocket. Considered the greatest good for use under a Special Use permit. Now a days good luck. Special Use permits are still available, but not issued for a permanent structure as this. Also the environmental reports for an EA. My guess this site has been recorded as a historic Cultural Resource. Contact the Forest Archaeologist to get more info. Amazing the FS has not removed the roof so it falls apart more rapidly. As a historic site may have saved the roof.
Sara, that was an outstanding adventure. Thanks for taking us along with you!
I loved that you hiked to the Ashram! I was in the area back in April and considered doing it but there was still so much snow up in the mountains that I changed my mind. I am glad i get to see it thru WH's eyes now, a lot more FUN!
Hope that next winter is just as good with 70 feet snowfall
I live on the East Coast but having visited the Eastern side of the Sierra many times I can say this trip brought back many good memories. Going though Death Valley in August, Lone Pine, Tom's Place (get breakfast there), the burritos at La Casita in Bishop, trekking with Sierra Mel and her llamas, Piute Pass into the Humphreys Basin, camping at Anvil Camp and going over Shepards Pass. Coming down it in late August in a popcorn snow storm, fishing the Wallace Lakes area, Sky Blue Lake in the Miter Basin, , Cottonwood Pass, Muir Lake , New Army Pass. If I had the cash I'd live in the area. Well done Wonderhussy!
WOW. Most beautiful hike you've shared, perhaps. Thanks!
When i see places like this right here in America, it makes me wonder why anyone would fly all the way across the world...this scenery is comparable to Switzerland...Our country is SO diverse and gorgeous....and Sarah, im ever grateful for you showing us some of the most beautiful places ever. Id never be able to hike up there...so thank you.♥️ Sarah YOU are the REAL treasure!❤
Same. My cascades feel like hiking through Moria in Lord of the Rings.
I can't imagine Wonderhussy not talking for 10 seconds let alone 10 days.
"I don't know if I should cross this creek!" , which is so loud she has to yell over it - & then crosses it
Sarah the wood pieces in the wall give you an attachment point to put something up over the stone wall. If you ever go into a very old castle you will see little pockets if the wood has rotted away, it gave a point to attach a nice interior wall.
You are Awesome for crossing that Creek as you call it. That is some serious stuff. I give you 5 Stars for that. I love hikes like this. Many safe Journeys and always ask for protection. Peace.
Glad to see you back in the Owens valley! My backyard! Nice exploration!!
Another great video, Sarah, just wonderful. I am amazed that you only have less than 250,000 subscribers when some of these "van life" people have 3x as many. Can people really think that watching videos of other people going to truck stops to take showers, making salads and taking 200 yard walks to swimming holes are somehow more interesting than your videos? I really don't see how. Keep up the good work, kiddo!!
I know right. Although Nikki has a cute dog.
Guess it's quality over quantity 🤣🤣 Sarah was born to do this...might just be the BEST RUclipsr ever...not one of her videos is ever boring... besides the fabulous scenery...her personality and informative narratives are the BEST.If RUclips gave awards for content... she'd be an Academy Award winner!!! Love Sarah!
That's it! Wonderhussy needs a dog to travel with her. No longer alone in the world. Her trusty companion at her side for love and protection. We can call it Wonder puppy!
@@lorrie5881 Yes, agreed! Her production values alone are superlative! She is uniquely talented. Really should be working for television.
Another great adventure Sarah your the best ❤
I never heard of this place. Love beautiful hikes with interesting destinations like this.
Wonderhussy, you've done it again! Peace and beauty with a touch of suspenseful terror as you cross the raging current. No one to witness if you fail. Only an abandoned white Toyota to mark your spot at the trailhead. But you succeeded and shared a magnificent trip with all who will watch. Thanks Sarah. Stay safe and well as you proceed to more adventures.
The boards in the concrete walls were there to help support the boards used to make forms to pour the concrete. they would pull the forms off leaving the segments in the wall. The rock on the outside was applied to the concrete walls. I suspect those wood fragments in the walls were utilized to nail on chicken wire to help reinforce the rocks from delaminating. The roof was a thing of beauty. The framing may have utilized the boards that were used as forms for the concrete. It was quite a feet to drag all the supplies up there. Hope I wasn't mansplaining.
Be well, stay safr
I am amazed at how clean things are. Someone has to have cleaned it out the natural debris
Wonder girl. Perhaps the best hike along ever. The scenery, your narrative and of course that structure. Wow. Matter of fact I am giving you a “triple wow” award for this one. That was a darn amazing video. You done it again young lady. Love your work and thanks for taking us along. ❤❤
It's a shame the roof isn't being maintained...a metal roof would last forever....Awesome view!
You are amazing. Thank you for taking me places I will never be able to visit myself. Thank you.
It always amazes me how much "stuff" had to be hauled up to a site "like" this , to build this beautiful ashram !!!!
I used to love to hike and explore. Actually, I still do, but my nearly octogenarian legs restrict me to mainly paved city trails. Better than nothing , I suppose. Though I can't make those adventurous hikes, you can and I tag along vicariously. You do a great job. You are no Wondrewussy.
It's so beautiful! This is like a weather report, history lesson and science class all rolled into one! Maybe you should consider becoming a travel guide and give tours?
she is and does😂
Those mountains above the Ashram are absolutely spectacular. We have nothing like it here in Australia although the stone mountains around Queenstown in Tasmania are also impressive but on a much smaller scale.
Here's a passing thought. The Ashram has been blessed by having the presence of Sarah Jane (aka Wonderhussy) visiting it. ☮
Thanks for the trip and Incredible views. I remember your 10 day ordeal. Well Done then and today. A massive undertaking to build that. 2x12" planks are not easy to carry, never mind the concrete and rock. Was it choppered in?
The roof needs immediate repair or all will be lost.
Great video, Sara! Glad you crossed that water and shared the beauty of it all. Gorgeous scenery!
I've heard about that place but never made the trip down there. And the bridge would have still been there.
Thanks for hiking up there and taking us along.
I'd be happy to live there also. What amazing views in every direction! I can see what drove the Wolf's to pick that location. I'm just surprised that there's no upper balcony to really appreciate the mountains from.
Great video Sarah. Keep up the Great work!
Love your video's , I think your taking to much risk on this one . One slip and your miles from help. You need to take a larger backpack with supplies food, water, warm clothes just in case you got to spend the night in the woods. Stay safe.
Every time I hear the word "ashram," I think of the song "Life Story" in which a woman sings of her life and in one verse about her ex-husband:
"My husband found himself his ashram,
Lost forty pounds and went through hell.
Then one day he came back from limbo,
Found himself some bimbo,
And moved to New Rochelle."
There’s awesome footage from when they were building the Ashram on RUclips.
This is one of your best tanks for taking us along
Sarah, if you're going to bushwhack like this then you need to start bringing trail marking tape & a compass.
The tape is sold at hardware stores. It's florescent yellow.
The compass you can get at any backpacking store.
This is a signature Wonderhussy video. I put it up there with the 'Lost Germans' and the 'Epic of the Donner Group disaster', and that series is top notch. I can think of several people who would really enjoy this video.
What a beautiful area. That concrete building is rather intrusive out in the wilderness.
C'mon everyone, give this young lady a big 'ol THUMBS UP!! She deserves it and she won't even ask for it!
I love the way you honored the spirit of that place. Thank you so much for that. I think this was your best video.
That was awesome!!! Glad you're back out on the road again but be careful. Thanks Sarah.
WOW!!! 🤩 What an excellent adventure, paired with inspirational music… I had tears in my eyes at 26:00. Many Thanks!
I knew you would get over that creek. Glad to see you made it back.
Another wonderful Wonderhussy adventure/philosophy episode!
You're the real treasure Wonderhussy!!
I especially liked this video. What an amazing hike and Ashram.
Beautiful. As a Catholic I felt compelled to make the sign of the cross when you said a prayer before leaving the Ashram.
I am so glad you posted this. You do not need to make a trek to find heaven. You can find it on your front porch. If you are ready, you will find it everywhere, If you aint ready, you will find it nowhere.
Nice to see you back on the trail again. The sparkle in your eyes. And that adorable smile when you tell those stories in that wonderful outfit you wear. And thanks for showing this all is wonderful places you go to
Good for you. I would NOT have crossed that white water. Awesome content, but don't risk yourself please ❤❤
So cool Sarah. This goes in the Hall Of Fame w/Wonderhussy 😊
When I was there in 2017 or so, the outbuilding is a tool shed. There are a few spare building materials inside used by those who keep the place in decent shape
Good job Sarah! Laughing. You, be quiet for ten days? Amazing. Thanks for posting.
Awesome video !!!!
I explore southwestern Arizona. This is where I live. In the small town of Roll. I hope you carry some type of protection. I never use to worry about it but have had some encounters where I needed it. I now carry a gun everywhere. Doesn't mean you have to use. It just means it's there if you need to. Love the videos you make keep up the great work.
In the spirit of most transcendental meditation 🧘♀️ 🧘♂️
Ummmmmmmmm...
Thank you, for transporting us there.
We appreciate the guidance 🙏 🙌
I can't even imagine hanging out at the ashram in the 1930s. How remote, isolated and peaceful
that must have been
That was beautiful. I used to hike all over. My back issues prevent that now. Going up there was a great experience. Thank you!
Eastward, the sunrise, Coffee’s scent, the warm screen’s glow, New day, full of hope. Again Sarah has shown us the way, and we've all been blessed with Visions of Wonder.
Okay??? Is there more??? 😮
Continue?
Sarah I lived in Sparks for 20 years after moving from Ohio and I kinda wish I'd run across a woman like you who appreciate the outdoors as much as you.
HI! Sarah: Congratulations on making the hike and two sketchy creek crossings. Goal oriented is a plus.
I had seen a video of the Ashram a few years ago. But I can't find that exact one. So I do appreciate yours, to remind me what it is like.
I live here in Las Vegas and I love to hike and so I bookmark this one for future. I am having a blast watching your hikes. You’re so funny. Thank you for putting out such entertaining videos. I appreciate it.
Thanks for that amazing hike, visit to that structure...beutiful views...the amount of work to build it...incredible.
Sarah, you're a genius finding these places...
Looks like an awesome recording studio. My band, Me, Myself, and I would go there in a second.
Beautiful place!!!!!
There's no sudden awakening in a 10 day Vipassana course which you might have taken in Oakmont. Just the realization that everything is in a state of flux, This too shall pass. Sarah this is one of your best videos and I have seen them all for many years now. What a find way up there.
One of your best discoveries and presentations: thanks!
It’s nice to see your finally out of your compound. You must have finally got your car fixed. Hallelujah! I’m sure your glad.
"Hey Y'all, whatcha doing in there!". Thanks for your humor, and your adventures you share.
Sarah Jane, you’re truly a baddass! Thanks for the amazing content.
Love doing these outback travels with you.
Wonderful adventure today Sarah. Thank you.
I am so exhausted from your hike…thx for taking us to this amazing find…never heard an Ashram, but thank you for another educational and visual episode…safe travels Sarah Jane…
Cooked stinging nettles are one of the most nutrient dense plants you can eat! I like them in a garlic onion real unsalted butter sauce!
Well done, well reported........stay safe we all need you in our lives.
Beautiful building, amazing construction. Great video Sarah
Wow! What a place! Thanks for crossing the raging river.
The holes on inside walls are from snap ties that went from one side of form to the other to keep them evenly separated and befome slip (up) forms so walls could br raised up 2 or 3 feet at a time stones stacked against outside form and concrete filled in against inside form. Usually snap ties spaced evenly so removing brackets (whalers) plywood can be removed moved up so bottom of forms were reinsert onto top snapties to continue building up walls. As google.
Fantastic! One of your best. As a former Californian, I always appreciated having many opportunities to reap the benefits of numerous visits of the East Sierras. Many thanks for sharing ~ it was WUNDERFUL!
I lived at the ranch right by the ashram. Dr. Wulffe was a spiritual leader who would have Sunday mediations.
According to history, he and followers built for a retreat.
Another factoid, a star crossed pair of lovers hid there from her family.
There was a picture of them on mantle.
Thank you Wonderhussy for bringing back a fond memory of my Owen's Valley sojourn.
The rocks from "Tremours" pole vault scene were left on the ranchers property per his request. Robert was kinda quirky.
I care took the ranchers animals when he would leave the area. Hiked to ashram for physical/mental benefits.
Great job!
All the old hippies die?
Its good you got to visit it while its still standing. The holes in the roof will only get bigger and lead to collapse. Also, the nubs of boards in the walls is probably from temp scaffolding used while building the upper section.
Thanks for posting, good job.
