Little correction, Amelia Earhart went down in the Pacific, not in the Bermuda Triangle.
I came here to say the same. She disappeared pretty much in the middle of the Pacific, about as far from the Bermuda Triangle as you could get.
There is speculation they made a crash-landing in the Marshall Islands.

Tips for bear country
Pepper spray, Little silver bells and cinnamon spay are recommended. Identify the scat. Brown bear scat is small and lumpy. Black bear scat is brown and has berries. Grizzly bear scat is large, hard, dark and has little silver bells, and smells like cinnamon and pepper.
As for the bears themselves, here's how to tell whether the bear you encounter is a black bear or a grizzly bear: Kick the bear in the rear and then climb a tree. If the bear is a black bear, it will climb the tree and eat you. If it's a grizzly, it will knock the tree down and then eat you.

I worked on the Shoshone N.F. in which Kirwen resides. Volunteer groups go there and do restoration work. Bless there hearts. Yes there is Griz there too.
She was trying to get to Howland Island in the Pacific. On the other side of the world from the Bermuda triangle. The US Navy helped in the search and I believe it lasted for months.
Yeah, she was way off on this one. Usually, I'm impressed with her knowledge with details...she hits on some obscure stuff sometimes.

A couple of tangentially-Kansas items in this very neat video. The woman who was recently killed in the area by a Grizzly Bear was from Derby, a town in Sedgwick County KS directly across Wichita from my location. Amelia Earhart was from Atchison KS, which today has the Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum, and the Amelia Earhart Hangar Museum that features a beautifully-restored (and last surviving) Lockheed Electra 10-E, the model of plane Amelia used.

The giant rivets are nails with large washers on them regular nails would tear through the tar paper. They were used to hold the tar paper on.

Miners didn't have much money to spend in the town due to low ore amounts. Therefore it makes sense that Lucille, who was obviously trying to build her own business, couldn't afford to hire a staff and so, she had to run the brothel herself; by hand. Reasonable explanation for why she was called "The Palmist".

I would never wander into bear country without my good friends Smith and Wesson, let alone problemed grizzlies, but that's just me. Yeah, I watched a PBS program on this ghost town a few years ago. I found it interesting that there was an Amelia Earhart connection to this rural area.....take care and travel on !!

The mountain range is preonounced "Ab-sore-a-ka." The Forest Service and volunteers have done a lot of work to stabilize the buildings in Kirwin. The lighter colored wood in the buildings is a result of those efforts. During the mining days most of the miners had their families with them, hence, less demand for saloons and brothels than if there had been a large number of single men. And, as pointed out by other commenters, Amelia Earhardt disappeared in the Pacific, thousands of miles from the "Bermuda Triangle." BTW, glad to see you spending time and doing videos in Wyoming.

I’ve lived and camped in grizzly country. Using your brain and following the instructions of experts improves your survival chances immensely. The people who get hurt are almost always the ones who screw up and surprise a mother bear with cubs.
Wyoming is just always beautiful. Who wouldn't want a cabin there. Good job keeping the bears away.
One summer I worked for the US Forest Service stationed in Dubois, Wyoming. Took awhile to get use to the elevation coming from Michigan. You could still find wooden flumes used to move logs down the mountains. Pretty country.
Regarding Kirwin ghost town. I think the material you thought was wall paper was asbestos sheeting. It had good insulation properties.

Great video. Hussy, my grandfather and his brother owned a ranch not far from Kirwin. I live in Hamilton Ohio now, where the Estate Stove was manufactured. Thanks for a great video.

Hi Sarah, thanks for another great video! I found out that Amelia Earhart crashed somewhere in the pacific. "Then, on July 2, 1937, Earhart and Noonan took off from Lae in New Guinea. With just 7,000 miles between them and their goal, they planned to stop at the isolated Howland Island in the Pacific for fuel. They never made it there. Instead, Amelia Earhart, Fred Noonan, and their plane vanished forever"

Looks like you were right on the remnants of Earhart's cabin. The Historical Marker on Google Maps indicates it was south of the green cabin and the Wood River. Beautiful scenery. Oh, and hats off to you for braving the Grizzly Bear habitat for all of us. Brave woman!

FYI, Amelia disappeared in the other side of the world from the Bermuda Triangle in the western side of the Pacific Ocean.
One of my favorite fishing spots is about 20 miles or so from Kirwin and I have visited Kirwin. I've been going there (once every year or two, as I live in Colorado) for 20 years now. I've never seen a grizzly. I've seen plenty of moose, though.
I like wearing a little jingle bell when I hike. Scares off the big scary animals
So does a .457 Weatherby.
The little bells is how they know it's grizzly poop.
Great Video! I first found your channel when you and your sister were searching for the Fenn treasure. Me and a few members of my family did a looong road trip to search and our first stop was Meteetsee. After a rest, we headed to a BLM camp and then to Kirwin for the day. That's a beautiful, but hairy drive! As newbie flatlanders, we were so bear unaware, it makes me shudder to think of it now! We poked around the buildings a little and headed to Amelias cabin site. It was just a basic foundation and about three logs high. It was right behind those structures you were at. It was kind of a rushed day, so your video was enjoyable to watch, I could've spent a couple of days poking around there! The wind and ice cave vids were great too!

Amazing how the ruins at Kirwin are in such good condition, compared to those one finds in the archetypal desert mining towns, where everything is rat-eaten and in shambles. Some of the wood in those buidlings looks like it was just put in place last year! Back in the '80s, a friend and I used to knock around ghost towns such as Kirwin, Bannack (Montana), Pahsirmeroi, Custer, Bonanza, and Empire (Idaho), and others. Back then, there weren't any dudes hiring camping adventure guides to pack them in and set up their tents. Nice video - you covered the features of the old town quite well! Cheers.
Some of the wood IS/was put in place recently . The undercarriage of that main large building was definitely shored up in the last decade to keep it from collapsing . As they say in Bodie , arrested decay .
It would be nice to see some funding so wunderhussy can finish Amelia Earhart's flight around the world.

Love your story's but Luceill the palmist or aka Rosey Palm was a friend of Amelia Earhart and her house had a runway so she could fly in, those wooden bunk beds were drying racks for you guessed it drying weed, the miners weren't allowed to drink while working but they could smoke weed, did you know George Washington owned a weed farm, every day he came home from work Martha had a big fat bowl waiting for him, for your last questions the structure with the tower is called the head frame for the elevator shaft and that long cylinder is a steam winch for hoisting ore up the shaft and that's how they come up with the song, she got the gold mine and he got the shaft, I hope this little history lesson answers your questions

I think that bucket is an old iron ore bucket. Those miners may also have been without whiskey, tobacco and bitter black coffee so they were lonesome old doggies. I borrowed that last line from a song about Wyoming btw.

Electricity was a thing, but many didn't have it until the 1950's. Including my mother's family in the Outer Banks.
Fun video to watch Sarah. I wandered around some pretty remote areas in Alaska exploring old mining camps. Such interesting stuff to see. Many of the places I went in my younger days have been looted and packed off by people who have no respect for history. It was all grizzly and black bear country. I carried bear protection much more lethal than bear spray but in all those years I never had to use it. I had several encounters over the years but never attacked. Just always be very aware in bear country. Bears are not predictable.

You know these people weren't nearly as prudish as we may think...I worked in national parks dressed in period clothing, and did a bunch of primary research on the characters. They were less sick in the head as we are, freer. (About this camp: probably or possibly one of the last joyful places to live out one's life on earth. Tragedy and joy are intertwined.) Their connection to nature was indelible.

Couldn't help but notice all the dead trees in the last part of this one. Looks like the Pine Bark Beetle has been around. Too bad. They have killed many trees at my property in Northern Idaho.

That gas fired heater on its side had a “MW” logo above the Signature brand name. I believe Signature was a brand of merchandise sold by the Montgomery Ward company of Chicago. In addition to having retail department stores, Wards had a major catalog business very much like Sears Roebuck and Company.
The Estate Stove Company started in 1884, although not known by this name. The Kahn Brothers, Lazard, and Felix, owned a foundry in Hanging Rock, OH. This foundry produced wood and coal-burning stoves for domestic purposes. Eventually, home heating stoves and gas furnaces were added to the product line. What you saw in the building was a kerosine stove. It's called a Rock house. I am glad you did not touch that ceiling and wallpaper. It is most likely asbestos. Where the boiler is located looks like a rock crusher using steam to run it.
doubtful it is/was a kerosene stove. Stove oil likely.
@@gordbaker896 Both fuels were available but oil would have frozen and kerosene would have flowed better. It could have been diesel for all we know.

The oar bucket you saw has a valve on the bottom . It is, or was used as, a "bailer" to draw water out of the bottom of the mine. Could have had a duel purpose.
That little gas furnace you ran across was a Signature brand furnace. It's Sears private label house brand back in the 60's/70's

I never worried too much about bears. Seen ‘em once in awhile but they usually run away. Then I started watching the Scary Bear Attack Channel here on RUclips… It ain’t no joke. Them running away most of the time is not the same as all of the time. Most of the reported attacks seem to be in Alaska, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. I’m glad you are keeping the bear spray close and making a lot of noise. Would hate to lose you. You’re a national treasure-at least in our little corner of these here inter-webs. 👍🏼🙂
Yes, those are the states with grizzly bears, which seem to be much more inclined to attack humans than black bears. Not to say that black bears shouldn't be treated with caution and respect too, as they are certainly capable of tearing you to pieces.
But bear spray ain’t gonna cut it. Yes, grizz’es not in Colorado still as far as I know. But if close to the Ming Dynasty of Wyo you better have real firepower and not be by yourself! You only need to run faster than your hiking partner which gives you time to unload.
Wonderhussy camping and or boondocking without a high top van, without a cargo trailer, without a camping trailer, without a tent. Now that takes some courage. Is there anyone out there that can compete with Wonderhussy? Defiantly not the masses of condo campers.

Hi Sarah, Amelia Earhart wasn't lost in the Bermuda Triangle (Atlantic Ocean). Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan are thought to have disappeared in the central Pacific Ocean on their way to Howland Island after taking off from the city of Lae in Papua New Guinea.

Wonderful video again! I just got back from photographing Bodie Ghost Town in the Sierras. Your Kerwin was very similar to Bodie in terms of condition. However, Bodie doesn't seem to have the time consuming ornate wood craftsmanship. Maybe it was because Bodie had brothels and saloons by the dozens. The Bad Men from Bodie could care less about woodworking on their days off. 🤣🤣🤣
I live near Bodie! I love visiting there! Bodie and the other old ghost towns had many fires and later people looting lumber. I imagine alot of the better woodwork with better craftsmanship were taken back before the area was protected. I live in a home that was made of different parts of very very old buildings that were cut into pieces (you can see saw marks) moved and put back together into the home I live in. I have no idea where they got the original pieces of the house (could be from a ghost town) but we’ve seen the original building when we’ve done remodeling and it’s from the same era as Bodie. They used shredded newspaper and cloth for insulation. So glad they protected Bodie because a ghost town called Aurora in Nevada was the same size and every single building was stripped and looted because it wasn’t protected.

Meteetsee -the next town over was one of the wildest towns in all of Wyoming. It was a hangout for some of the most famous outlaws including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. It was pretty much headquarters for the wild bunch in the state of Wyoming. So if they wanted to get wild they just took the stagecoach to Meteetsee.

It has been my experience that people from large cities are not as friendly too strangers as the hicks from the sticks are.
Very true, but I can't blame them. The two legged predators from the cities are far more dangerous than the four legged ones we have here in griz country.

ALASKA is must on The Old Bucket List. Gold, grizzlies, moose, eagles, mountains, rivers, caribou, volcanoes, hot springs, black bears and blueberries

When she was at the place reading information about the area , there was a sign saying " No Shooting " , does that mean you cant carry a gun in case of a bear attack?

I grew up in northern Wisconsin and my grandparents did not have indoor plumbing untill 1988 when their house burnt down and all of their 9 kids and 40 Grand kids chiped in to build them a new house with plumbing. Lol
