- This video is a real treat. We got a visit from Jean Ray Kendrick (previously Adams) who's father, Ralph Adams, ran Cerro Gordo in the late 1940s to the early 1950s. A period of time that is rarely covered by any of the history books.

I'm so happy she was able to revisit one of the most crucial places in her life before moving on -- something most aren't able to do. RIP Jean!

Maybe lookup her name and read her obituary. Maybe also do a records search as her birthdate was June 1st 1934.
@@christoner2666 How doesn't it fit? She was born in 1934 which means she was 16 in 1950. She says she lived there from 1940s to the early 50s. So her cooking story checks out to me?

@@christoner2666. . Mining operations spanned 1866 to 1957, producing high grade silver, lead, zinc ore, and more rarely gold ore and copper ore. While Mining had largely ceased by 1938 mining operations still continued until 1957. Now lad, get a calculator and you to the math. Clowns like you are quick to call people liars when they themselves are the uninformed. Were her years off by one or two? Maybe but that certainly doesn’t make her a liar.
You should name a building after her to honor her story! That was such a wholesome video and you could hear the joy she had reliving it rest in peace Jean ❤

That ending made me tear up. I'm so glad she was able to go back to where she grew up one last time. So beautiful you could capture her story. Now she will live on in everyone's memory forever.
You can't usually go back to a place in your past that hasn't changed beyond recognition. But this is an exception. It brought back so many precious memories for her.

Many when it closes to time passing they try to go back to place that they where happy in and she sure was and it was a joy to watch

Such a happy, joyous woman who was obviously delighted to tell her stories of her time in Cerro Gordo. None of us would have ever known Jean even existed, or of her crying about her potatoes not boiling at such an altitude, but she now lives on in the minds and hearts of TENS OF THOUSANDS of people who watch her story in this video. What an amazing story. To hear how she cooked, worked the slag, and used to be down in the mines, priceless historical accounts. Interesting how 700 level went outside just 70 years ago, speaks to the ongoing and regular collapses.

This is what I wanted to say also, besides what a wonderful woman she was and all her stories of what she experienced at the mine......was that there was an entrance from the 700 foot level on the back side of the mountain...? Did I miss something somewhere that this is the first time we have heard of this or is/was this old news...? Hmmm....maybe my mind is going to mush also...?

@@jonathanroberts3927I could be remembering incorrectly but I think it was a old "chimney" but it's sinced collapsed. If I'm thinking about the right location he tried to blow up the collapse with dynamite and use one of the backhoes to dig but the collapse just went to far.
@@noahhabbershaw8177 That was the Omega entrance which connected to 200 and 900 levels. Here’s the link. Brent and Heavy D did eventually get in from outside, but it was collapsed just beyond the portal entrance. All that dirt was like sand, so making it in at this point seems unlikely.

But fascinating how at one point it was big enough and ram could walk in from outside to the main shaft.

shows the importance of documenting oral history as a powerful source in helping us understand the past, and at Cerro Gordo, Jean's experience is even more poignant as women were in the minority in the town so would be a rare account. so glad you were able to make her a tangible part of the historical record of the town to keep her memories alive

So sad Jean passed after this. I think both she and Brent were blessed to have met each other and she was able to return to Cerro Gordo to revisit and tell about her past. Blessings to her and her family and also to Brent for having her there. I was hoping to see a last visit for her back down to the mine. Perhaps she can now. May she rest in peace.

Jean really looked like she was happy to be visiting her old stomping grounds, and i think it was nice that she was able to see Cerro Gordo before she passed away. You now have another chapter to add to Cerro Gordo's history, and talking to someone who lived and worked back in the 40's and 50's is really interesting. Jean is sleeping until the King returns, R.I.P. G-d bless everyone.

That part about the 700 going out the other side of the mountain is a juicy tid bit of info. I can only imagine what other info she had to tell ya when she was there. What a wonderfull opportunity and I am glad she was able to make the trip and that you were able to get those stories on film.
Get those stories from your family, people! You never know when they'll be gone... I loved her stories. '47 was when my folks got married after the war and Dad finished college on the GI Bill. I just LOVE history!

Brent- Did you know about the 700 foot level portal on the other side of the hill? Was Jean able to tell you anything you did not already know about the levels below the 900 foot level?

That was wonderful, It's so important to talk to the older folk wherever you are. They will tell you things you will remember and if you don't ask then that history goes with them and is forgotten forever. Rest in Peace Jean and thank you Brent.

First-person stories are such valuable things and the spirit of Cerro Gordo lives through a spirit of Cerro Gordo.
That was absolutely amazing. Coming from a miner who enjoys nothing more than to hear stories first hand from the “old timers” who worked in the mines 30-40+ years ago. Her stories from when she was a child and actually getting to go down underground. Amazing!
Content like this is GOLDEN! So important to document these things for history. What a great lady. So sorry to hear that she has passed. She was so happy to be up there one more time.

That was so special for her. The tears she shed seeing this place again, and the memories flooding back to her mind is just absolutely heartwarming. I know you've made her proud with what you've done in the time you've owned the town. That was her childhood. That was her home. I loved hearing her stories about her father and the men who worked the mines, as well as the things she did there growing up. Very special having her come back to re-live a few of the special memories she held onto so fondly. May she rest in peace knowing Cerro Gordo is being loved today as much as she must've loved it back then.❤🥹

That day likely meant a lot more to her then it seems. Some of it is reliving the old memories one last time and some of revisiting your past one last time can bring a sense of closure in a person's life. You did get to hear the stories first hand and have them recorded but for her it was a very special day. It was a beautiful moment for you to be able to get that moment. Not everyone gets moments like that before they pass on.

Ah Brent...I didn't expect that reveal...that she had passed away. She reminded me of my mother in law that passed as well and I had to fight back tears. Jean truly was part of the history of Cerro Gordo and to hear her speak of her time there is truly a blessing. RIP Jean.

Last of a dying breed. My grandpa is 86 years old and still thriving. The last grandparent in our family and we need to cherish every moment. This lady got to see her past one last time. Such a beautiful person she was.❤❤❤❤❤
