The reason why the Philippine representative stated the catholic religion as a vestige of colonialism is because Spain has used it as their foremost weapon against the Philippine people during their time there.

What I LOVE about the Gold Coast (Ghana) delegate is that he is an analytical thinker. He has the ability to poke holes in even the best explanation that the Philippines delegate has about the Americans' intentions. Gold Coast is very clear that there was an ulterior motive to the Americans "rescuing" the Philippines from the Spanish. It wasn't for goodwill. If the Americans had a real motive to help the Philippines back in the 1950s, (1) the US would have already left a LOOOONG time ago and (2) Filipinos wouldn't be coming to the US, Canada and other First World countries in droves if the US "helped" to make the Philippines economically viable.
Lol, the Philippines is one of the most important geographical locations in Asia; hence, America never wanted it to lose during that time, which is why they returned and liberated it first before pushing to mainland Japan. And if you think about why they are returning to the Philippines today, it is because, for the same reason, if China invades Taiwan, they need the Philippines and Japan for the deployment of their logistics and forces to defend Taiwan. That is not about helping the Philippines economically; it is all about controlling the best strategic locations in Asia.

There’s also a difference how Europeans and Americans colonize the country. You knew what happen to the British colonized countries and French or Dutch or the Belgium. Despite the differences there’s still a better relations with the Americans. The foundation of the constitutions.
The Philippines is Economically viable, it's our population and Corruption in Government levels that stagnated that growth, much of which can be seen today... As a Filipino now in Canada. Canada just offers better opportunities and livelihood than what was available a decade ago, let alone 40 to 50 years ago. 1950s PH is vastly different from the 2000s Philippines and it's the current 2010s that bolstered the change for the country to actually get better because politicians who are corrupt began to be prosecuted for their crimes. Much of which includes but isn't limited to Money Laundering, Insider Trading, and other forms of illegal activities that went unnoticed in those decades.
The US had no reason to stay after WW2, they chose to do that. The same thing happened in Korea and that's what led to it being split in two, because one half was siding with the Soviets and the other was joint forces with the Ally Forces of WW2. Yes they had ulterior motives, but they also held up their end of the bargain and that's largely due to the fact that when WW2 ended. The Philippines stagnated in Industry but grew immensely in the Out Sourcing of their work force. All of which can be seen today, with major companies and corporations now opening HQs in the Philippines, it's the same reason India began to out source, because the need for immigrant workers became more prominent as the decades dragged on.
Before that, Nurses and other Laborers left the Philippines en masse to work and study in the US, and eventually OFWs became a thing. That's what you call Overseas Filipino Workers who retain their Philippine Citizenship and work abroad in other countries, like the case with the Middle East, Europe, Australia, The US etc. They then take whatever money, work experience, and education they might've gotten during their time in those countries back to the Philippines and put them to use.
Let me frame that for you, in Canada and the Philippines. It was a rough adjustment but it became a smooth transition because the Canadian Government values Quality Education, a standard most if not all Filipinos strive to get or give to their children. This is a great thing, yet due to the corruption overtime in the Philippines. The results of the two are drastically different. Both aimed to give their population Quality Education. One succeeded and the other is just beginning to catch up in the past Decade or so. Why? Corruption led to substandard Quality Education in the Philippines where majority of the population rely on Public Schools that are poorly funded. And the staff are poorly compensated. Here in Canada a Teacher can make enough money to buy a house, car, and pay off their Bank Debts within the span of 5 years on their salary. My mother was a teacher in the Philippines and she could barely put food on the table and pay for rent and bills. On top of expenses.
That alone shows how drastically corruption can derail decades of growth seeded by previous non-corrupt admins, and how vastly it will affect the population for years to come. That's why I've grown to understand that Voting and Democracy are truly important aspects of building a society where everyone has equal opportunity to succeed in life. Anything else would just diminish the whole point of progressing forward as a society and country.
They all brought up valid points. And frankly we should be taking notes instead of just hanging on to their words.
The Philippines see catholic religion and school and associate it with colonialism simply because it's the colonialist Spanish that brought it and in some instances in such areas the people had their own spiritual beliefs and weren't really converted to catholicism voluntarily so it is indeed a reminder of colonialism because they were forcefully catholicisised and uprooted from their indigenous spiritual beliefs

Public schools in Ghana are free through high schools. The majority of the high schools are public and boarding. Feeding, lodging, clothing, and textbooks are free.

Before the Philippines was given Independence in 1946 by US, it was a Territory, just like Puerto Rico, Guam and Hawaii, of the US, that is why commodities were free. The first Civil Governor of the Philippines in 1900 was William Howard Taft.
After WWiI, the US had to support and assist the Philippines from the damages of war.

The Philippines used to be part of America, and I personally believe the reason they were so involved with them becoming economically stable and self-sufficient was because they didn’t want them to become a state Due to them, being of a certain race during that time

False. The communist insurgency in the Philippines came 2 decades after the US gave Philippines its independence. There was no serious threat of communism inside the Philippines during US colonization. The only reason the US stayed was because the PH is in the heart of the Pacific, a vital location for US to exert its military and economic might in Asia.
Although they have given us independence in 1946, they kept their military bases in the Philippines until 92. The Subic Naval base and Clark Air base were both the biggest military installations of the US outside their country.
Though I would agree that partially it was communism that made US stay in the Philippines, just not in the country but in Vietnam, China, and Russia. The US military bases in the PH were vital against the Vietnam war.

it’s free for primary but second you have to pay. Primary is usually from pre school to age. other countries it’s compulsory till age 7, different from country to country .

Education is important in Colonialism because if you look at those British colonies such as Africa, India, the British did not educate or provide education to their colonies. With regards to the Philippines, the Spaniards built the oldest Catholic University in Asia,the University of Santo Tomas in 1605 - 1611. But only the wealthy can get the Catholic education. The National hero, Dr. Jose Rizal got his M.D. from Spain.
The US acquired the Philippines from Spain and became a territory of the US for $20 Million (Spanish American War). The US brought public schools education giving more access to education.
And FYI, in 1898, the US army started to give nursing education to Filipinos and many Filipinas were sent to the US to study nursing. That is the history why there were and still are many Filipino nurses in the US.

I would just like to say something about my country's Education during colonialism. During colonialism my country Gambia, Education was only for christians as it was the means to teach the people how to read and write the bible. Infact some people at that time convert to Christianity to be in those schools. That is why the christians are more educated than other religions in The Gambia
Back then money money had a lot more value meaning the purchasing power was very high and so people could survive on that. However, $50 compared to what was obtained back then in the US.

catholicism was introduced to philippines by spanish colonizers...and was also introduced in america by spanish conquistadors, you are also colonized by different european countries, bringing catholicism, protestantism...etc. without those countries you'd still be praying to your sun god.
christian schools are viewed as colonialism or imperialism because missionaries introduced christianity. therefore, missionaries initiated colonialism. in many books, scholars term missionaries as agents of colonialism

In Ghana now, school is literally free to high school
50:08 the system would make sense in that the bags were bought in bulk ,I guess I don't know how it worked, because they were not even sending so many students, just twenty or less than 30 per year the whole country. The schorlaships don't cover much just 2-3% of tuition, its more of an incentive. The Kennedy Airlift programme for East Africans I think is the one that had many private donors.
Exchange students has always fascinated me. An experience away from family in another country (and continent) has the ability to shape their lives for the better good.
Education in Ghana is free till university . From nursery to secondary is free till date

The Christianity and colonialism association is due to the fact that, the Christian missionaries usually were in these colonial spaces before the European merchants who later became colonial masters. The indigenous folks after conversion into Christianity believed whatever they were told including the fact that these Europeans were chosen by God to save them through 'civilization' hence they will need them to rule over them. These missionaries tend to work with these politico-merchants(merchants backed by the country's government) for sponsorship,thus, captalising on the indigenous folks trust in them and betrayed them into conforming to and eventually coming under colonial rule. Chinua Achebe's book Things Fall Apart gives a vivid explanation on how the indigenously Africans became blinded by their new found Christian faith which was used to manipulate them into slavery on their own soil. With this, they didn't have to ship the rest of the Africans to the New World as slaves anymore but enslave them mentally on their own soil for the European colonizers to have their own way.
Imagine 300 years under the Spaniards and robbed of your own culture. 👀

Hello, filipino guy here and I think the real reason America liberated Philippines is because of the strategic point of it. With Philippines it is a peninsula that you have to go through in Pacific and you can easily reach the surrounding countries or monitor the movements of other countries via water. America had to reclaim/liberate Philippines in WW2 since it is the best strategic point for them in the Pacific
Also with the revolutionary fight against America, KKK (Different from the American Version, although the initials are the same it stand for something else entirely) wanted to be independent from the Americans and from what I have studied here in American Highschools, labelled countries such as Philippines, needing to be saved from our own stupidity as we do not know anything or how to self govern and such which was proven wrong as we were able to do so for 6 months without little to no trouble before the Americans came over to establish their own government influence
Do correct if I am wrong on things, as this is what my current understanding is from my experience and education.

The thing is, Filipinos are originally pagans and have a rich culture about different gods as well as entities. There were babaylans, mangkukulam, etc. that was then banned by the Spanish as they spread Christianity. Some people are even killed because they refused to switch religion. This is because the Spanish people believe that worshiping other deities will cause up rises. So yes, this played a huge part in colonialism
back then 50 dollars was a lot, because people of 60s, and 70s were being paid $2-4 a month our grand parents, they educated our parents and did investments too, I just dont understand how they did it.

Honestly nothing is free in my opinion on this planet, there is always a balance. America or any colonial country 🤔 does not for free, There is always an interest. The student, from the Philippines 🇵🇭, at that time had little knowledge about how foreign countries were dealing with other countries socially and political and economically too.

People back then in “underdeveloped” countries may be earning as small as $22 a year but can still be richer than a person in America who has financed a home and car, or have credit cards and have no real savings. It may take slower for people to earn money, but their lifestyle is different and even homes are built more sustainable. Food is grown in their own yard. The way they base economic growth on the US dollar is not really fair because if you go to Philippines now, for example, you will see a lot of development, even after the multiple colonialist suppression and world wars, but people still use cash. Banks loan with very high interest that people still use cash and do not have as much bank loans for every little thing like cell phone buying or even groceries using credit cards. Banks typically do not issue credit cards unless they can see you can afford to pay for it. Most fresh markets accept only cash and now they accept digital money but still in cash form.
