  • Football isn’t just a game. It’s a moral undertaking. And as fans of conscience, we should think about what we’re sponsoring when we tune in. Steve Almond wants us to start thinking about what football truly means to us, as Americans, and why we need this violent sport to make us feel alive.
Steve Almond is the author of eight books, including the New York Times bestsellers "Candyfreak" and "Against Football." His short stories have appeared in the Best American Short Stories, the Best American Mystery Stories, and Pushcart anthologies.
His journalism has appeared in the New York Times Magazine and elsewhere. He lives in Arlington, MA, with his wife, his three children, and his debt.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I feel the same way about dangerous race car driving 200 miles around the track.......where actual people in the audience have actually been killed by flying wreckage!!! Angry Superbowlers have abused and killed their domestic partners......

As much as I don't like Mr. Almond, he's dead right about this issue. I read the book. There really isn't anything much extra in it except extra about his personal life.

Interesting use of Trump - and he didn't even mention the further backstory of Vontaze Burfict's intentional injury style of play.

As much as I don't like this man or his work, he's right about this topic. It's a short book. If you listen to this talk, you'll hear everything in the written version except his whining about his personal life.
