I can actually understand why akira just nodded his head and listened to gordon's scolding without saying anything back. In most asian households we're taught to nod, accept and agree with them since childhood, the silence is to show respect to the elders, talking back or even giving opinions is often seen as rude.

As an asian, I can fully understand why Akira just nodded and kept quiet when Gordon was scolding him, it was a way to show respect. In most asian countries, nodding back when being scolded, especially if the one scolding you is an elderly, is a sign of respect. He kept his composure, he looked like he had a lot to say but he didn't.

Let's be real. The wife was 100% the problem. While it's important to acknowledge that she absolutely had to struggle for 4 years on her own, it's also clear that she does not take criticism well. She also believes herself to be corrected all the time.

it is hard to get the full picture through a show like that AND it is unfair to judge a persons behaviour when they are on their edge and exhausted. It looks like Akira has severe depression and that is so hard on a partner. I think we do not need to talk about blame and fault here... we do that too often as human beings when things are more complex. Certain behaviors are a problem, absolutely. A person 100%? feels like unfair bashing. Did you also see how in need she was for his emotions? And how she cheered him on when he showed them? This is a long story and she certainly picked up some behaviors while he was unavailable, yeah, but that is not necessarily her identity, her complete character.

For anyone curious; unfortunately, Sushi Ko is now closed.
They closed on the 8th of August, 2009. A year or so before the episode even got to air. Lisa says the relaunch may have come a bit too late and the business was already going under. Sammy's blog had a rather large statement on it but some key points are how the areas economy may have something to do with it and how the entire family went from incredibly excited to devastated as the closure happened mere months after the episode was wrapped.
A true shame. Wherever Akira, Lisa, Sammy and Hana are today I wish them the best of luck.

The biggest problem is his wife. Not that she doesn't support him, she destroyed him mentally. See how Akira has changed back to his old self, he got his passion back, energized, motivated, corrected his little mistake, he smiled and happy but then Lisa just sitting there, waited her chance for him to make a mistake and blame him. See how she said she think he doesn't work hard enough and "worried" about he is not gonna ever be the chef that he should be? that is a legit toxic and strong negative thought which can cause him to demotivated and feel bad. Akira didn't blame her anything or angry at her at all as he truly loved his family. A true gentleman he is. Lastly, his children's are beautiful and kind hearted.

That's not fair, the wife and kids were all working there, he didn't want to cook anymore, became a manager and, when he wasn't pottering around, kept disappearing. They all seemed like they were broken to me. Plus, he seemed more embarrassed by his wife's silly dance, than he did about his awful food and kitchen hygiene. He needs to get his priorities right.

If you look at the family gathering again, the wife is not really as supportive as the kids because in the scene, you can see she's still grumpy while the kids are happy to see their dad is in charge again. These family need therapy and better communication.

@@tommyfield8449 it may sound awful to say things bad at someone who looks depress but you got to remember that is HIS restaurant.
If it sucks then you don't sugarcoat it. Lying won't help a sad person feel happy.
If there is anything a depress person don't want is someone who lies to them just to make them feel better. Believe me I have been through stuff also so I know what I'm talking about.

@@evenskyzhekovic2538 There’s a difference between helping someone understand what’s wrong with what they’re doing and straight up mocking and laughing at them for it

This episode really upset me. Akira is such a sweet, warm hearted, talented man. Which has clearly rubbed off on his children. His wife however, came across as a manipulative, psychotic bully.

This was one of the best episodes! The owner was so embarrassed and didn't talk much but it's night and day his mood and attitude by the end of the episode!

The wife is the real issue
He would have more confidence if his wife supported him. He’s burnt out, and could use a break!
