You know people give Kaiba shit for what he pulled at the end of his second duel with Yugi, but the thing is, to Kaiba, it wasn't about just winning the duel, it wasn't about the king of games title, it was about saving Mokuba, and he was willing to die if it meant saving him. When he stood on that ledge, it wasn't because he thought it was a strategy to win, it was because if he couldn't save his brother then he probably would've jumped anyway.
You're not understanding, it was his willingness to die in that moment. He'd rather get flung off the Castle and die than lose his chance to save mokuba
The Paradox Brother duel still lives in my head rent free, and made Gate Guardian one of my favorite monsters to this date, despite always being beyond terrible in the actual TCG! Also, I was trying to think through the duels when you put that as #2 thinking, "What could POSSIBLY beat the tag duel, I can't imagine what it is." and when I realized I forgot about Yugi vs. Joey I was like, "NOPE NEVERMIND I totally agree!" That duel is LEGENDARY!
@@tay-yugioh if you accept co-writers it would be very fun to talk about ideas in the server and if you want to just make it a solo project I am looking forward to what you got
I don’t accept co-writers per se but I’m more than happy to take any suggestions or ideas people have and if I like them I implement them into the story!
Wow! I must say, I’m happy to see someone here who adores the Paradox Brothers Duel. I think that’s my favorite one from Duelist Kingdom. The Labyrinth felt so uniquely different from everything that came before it and I would have loved it if they made that a spin off game you could play in real life, a kin to what they did with Dungeon Dice Monsters. Gate Guardian and B. Skull Dragon were two of the coolest monsters ever, and watching Yugi and Joey over come those odds was so cool.
Honestly I think the dub did yugi vs mai a lot better Without the context of season 0 the 4kids writers actually did something interesting in the original sub yugi is Judy too focused on the Pegasus duel ahead so doesn’t put his all in against mai, but in the dub none of that happened this is the first time yugi really notices the pharaoh and seeing how far he’s willing to go really messes with him so it makes a lot more sense for his focus to be split to avoid another situation like the top of the castle
I just wanted to say I appreciate your videos. I’ve been on a sad spell lately and this video just really helped me get in a better mindset so I can actually get some sleep tonight. Thank you
Watching this just reminded me of a fun fact I'd thought I'd mention, when the RUclipsr Yugioh Everything Ranked all of the main protagonist loses in Yugioh, he placed the video tape duel in dead last.
Would you count the Yugi vs Mokuba duel with the Dark Kaiba one? I would have just written it off as not a duel cause it was incomplete but the video tape duel was there too
After watching back the Mokuba duel, it really was only one turn, so I completely disregard it. At least the video tape duel had a couple turns and moves!
I have always liked the "beyblade" duel disks. It is a step up from the duel arenas more commonly found throughout duelist kingdom. However it is not finished yet. Just like a mid stage pokemon evolution I think its supposed to be this weird in-between fase, and it does great in capturing that feel.
It definitely does the job as a “prototype” duel disk but it was always used as a different type of game almost and I really didn’t like that, I also quite liked the arenas though! I just think it became difficult to implement them in things like battle city.
I feel the anime didn’t do as good of a job of the evolution of the holograms compared to the manga. I never felt the beyblade duel disks were that impressive in the anime, but they seemed more logical in the manga,
Joey vs Bonz is kind of funny, before that duel it was always Joey getting the backseat help from his Yugi, the best duelist in the world. When the situation finally switches and Bonz is the one getting help from a world class duelist, it just seems so much worse. Really showed the hypocrisy of Joey and the way he won before, along with his growth.
I mean, there's an obvious difference between someone on the side saying "Don't give up" and Bandit Keith telling Bonz exactly what to play and when to play it...
I blame this season for me not knowing how *the hell* the game worked for a long time as a kid lol (Mind you it was really tough to get a hold of episodes of the show. It rarely aired on TV where I'm from, so the main way to watch the show was to buy CDs for the show or that of movies that had episodes of the show as bonus content. Both of which were relstively rare) Its only once I actually found the rules online and caught reruns of GX later on that I put it together lol
Growing up for me I was only really old enough to understand what I was watching during Battle City on TV, so all I remembered from Duelist Kingdom was the cool monsters and what people looked like from sitting there while my big brother watched the original series, eventually I was old enough to find it on the internet lmao
while i agree this threw off a lot of kids growing up with the series (at least it gave playground rules) but imma try to explain why Duelist Kingdom is the way it is. IIRC it wasn't until Battle City in the manga when the OCG came out and when turning it into an anime they just followed the manga in terms of rulings and logic. To be fair if you want universe logic Pegasus studied the murals of which portrayed how the game was played. As far as fusions it just made sense for them to come together and quite literally fuse together hence why the fusions that are done in the anime are done with poly and as far as the other cards that are fusions like flame swordsman, may have been depicted as normal monsters or had no idea what the materials were. Duelist kingdoms weird terrain bonus and secret abilities comes down to a game of logic and appearance, Like Gate Guardian having the ability to negate attacks 3 times because of it being the combined threat of Kazejin, Suijin, and Sanga which honestly makes GG better in the anime as you're trading 3 monsters with protection effects in for a 3750 beat stick but to be fair it was the second strongest monster in the game. As far as the levels on the card was more and likely something to depict how strong a monster truly was which is why in DK level 5 and up monsters usually are formidable in battle HOWEVER the lower level effect monsters while weak can still be a threat, Relinquished for example being level 1 shows it has no stats but its effect makes up for it and for it being a ritual monster meant it was something to be feared which says a lot given DM didnt have too many ritual summons and when they did get summoned it was usually a game changer. TLDR; Pegasus was just following what he transcribed from murals and tablets while Kaiba refined the game and turned it into what we know it as today, Fusion monsters were literal fused monsters that made sense and the normal played fusion monsters meant they were either supposed to be a normal monster or didnt know what the materials were, abilities are just logic and appearance based, the levels signified the power of the card while ritual monsters were usually unstoppable forces and effect monsters usually made up their weak power. sorry for the book of text, it just clicked when reading your comment and i hope i described it pretty well where it makes sense why Duelist Kingdoms rules and such are what they are
Adding to what shadow mega said there are also specific rules to the duelist kingdom version of the game such as Direct attacks were not allowed. If you're unable to play a defending monster on your turn, you lose the duel. Destroying monsters by card effects will deal proportional amounts of damage, depending on the exact card. Spells can be used at any time. Traps are triggered when the activation requirement is met. Also because it was inspired by DND there are some interesting things you can do in regards to where cards are on the field and how they effect the field Monsters can hide behind eachother, magical hats and shift moving the monster around, castle of dark illusion, burning land, leviathan etc changing the field.
You definitely have some hot takes, to me at least, for example I really don’t like the Yugi vs Joey duel, but really enjoy the Panic duel. To each their own.
In defense of the video tape duel, Pegasus did win. He won by exploiting the time rules, the most evil way to win possible! Also fun fact about me: The Tea vs. Mai duel was the first episode me and my siblings watched of the show 🤣 somehow that didn't scare us off.
Yeah for sure! I’ve had people in the comments who love the Yugi/Kaiba duel on top of the castle but I just don’t enjoy it as much personally, that’s part of the fun!
I totally get why your number 1 pick is number 1. But it also does frame Yugi as a long term plan cheat too. Yugi on the boat on the way to Duelist Kingdom: Here Joey. Have this Time Wizard. It'll bump your decks power by quite a bit. Yugi in his duel against Joey: I gave you Time Wizard to increase your deck's power. But I also knew we would eventually cross paths and you would use it against me. However, what you didn't know is that was my plan all along as you have no increased the power of my best monster with Time Wizard and given me this game.
It wasnt really obvious Yugi was going to win in video tape duel. Pegasus sets a card and we never see what it is. In manga, Pegasus actually says "I would lose if you attack, or would I?"
My top 3: 🥉 Yugi vs Pegasus 🥈 Joey vs Bandit Keith 🥇 Yugi vs Joey Honorable Mentions: 🏅 Yugi and Joey vs The Paradox Brothers 🏅 Yugi vs Kaiba (1st Duel) I've always appreciated the stakes in Season 1 being super personal for literally EVERYONE. @@tay-yugioh I actually really liked that duel, the way Yugi disrespected that bully was really badass, I think it was really cool the way Yugi had everything planned far ahead, the way he won was pretty original and skillful, also I liked the irony of Panik ultimately losing due to his own coward strategy, without even realizing it. I was a little bit surprised to see this duel so low in the video, but I guess it's just matter of tastes.

The reason why I think it's so great is because it really showed how manipulative Pegasus can be. Most people at the time thought Kaiba would never do an errand for Pegasus since he kidnapped his brother and we thought Kaiba was just gonna battle Pegasus right away once he got to the castle the first time. Instead Pegasus held Mokuba's soul as a hostage and had Kaiba duel Yugi on his behalf. Another thing that was interesting about this duel was the fact that I doubt anybody watching the show for the first time would ever expect Kaiba to win. Especially in the manner that he did. Also even though Kaiba seemed like the bad guy, he had a noble reason for doing what needed to be done to face Pegasus. The result of that duel also developed Mai and Teas characters as well.
I like the video but I got to say blue-eyes is better than red-eyes just like the card states 2nd best I like red-eyes but blue-eyes was my very first Monster card and I still use my very 1st blue-eyes in my extremely powerful counter Dragon deck that has been Undefeated for 10 years granted I've taken some time off from dueling for the past 14 months but my deck Can still go toe to toe with the best
