    This is one of the most tastiest(and oldest) streetfood in India. The taste is similar to that of a potato with smokey and nutty flavor(although very fibrous). It is very healthy too. Despite it looking unhealthy, when you have to eat it, you would have to peel the outer covering(as thick as a banana peel) which will reveal the tuber. After you finish the tuber, you can also eat the middle part which is very pulpy mid-rib which is concentrated with flavor.

    I'm not sure if anyone calls it 'Gengulu' but here in Telanagana, we call it, 'Gegulu'. For those wondering about the taste, it ranges from slightly sweet to bland. Also, depending on how developed the sprout was when plucked, it can range from very fibrous to mashed potato consistency. This is a sprout of the palm-wine (toddy, Palmyra plant) plant whose fruit (seeds inside those fruits actually) is very tasty depending on how young they are when they are cut. For those, who haven't experienced toddy, you really need to do that as long as you can get some unadulterated sap extracted by a master-tapper. Yes, tapper and his techniques make difference in taste apparently. My family who is much more knowledgeable about this tell me. It is a very good natural alcoholic drink which has many medicinal benefits. I have had it many times and can tell you this, as long as you get it pure and early in the day, it is absolutely enjoyable.

    Vary interesting use of the pot upside down, I wonder if they end up kind of steamed or only roasted? I was guessing roasted as I saw no liquids during un-potting, But as the bottom is open they might steam first and condensation would drip out as the cooking goes on. Anyway cool use of a pot I had not seen before TY

    • @Endangereds
      @Endangereds 8 лет назад +1

      +Ani G That Idiot(Buyer) is waiting for the camera to be focused on him while he pay. As if he bought all of them and helped the seller earn a life times worth of money.
      Work is divided. Her work is to take them out safely and put them in the basket. Then carry them till the selling point(Under the tree near seller). Then the man will group them and sell them. As he is the person to take care of how many sold and to whom he is selling, buyers wont disturb her and create confusion. Only cheaters do such thing.(creating confusion and take off without paying the seller.) Universally, at the end of the day they will check how much they earned and get back home. If she is working for him, he will pay her daily or monthly basis. But mostly those could be husband & Wife or Father & daughter or relatives or neighbours etc... When her work is done, she will join him and help him with binding them or collect money. There is nothing wrong happening. As there is a camera at that moment, Idiotic behaviour came out of a Idiot. If Audio was available, we would have heard what that ass was talking.

    Its tender shoots of palm tree Asian Palmyra tree, after the sowing of the seed the farmers remove the shoots when they are about a 12 to 15 inches in length. Then they bake as shown in video. The taste of the shoots are like starchy smooth like soft powdery not sour or sweeter.

    Great video that brings sweet memories of our simple, healthy and organic snacks we used to eat. I remember my grandfather bringing a bunch of them from the village when he visited us. Its been years since i've had them. Love the earthly flavor It has, its an acquired taste though. Never thought it was this much work. These people need to be paid a lot. But we city people exploit them by paying less or bargaining with them. I wish the camera man at least tipped them some good money. I would buy everything and give them a huge tip. They look so sincere, innocent and hardworking. Thanks for the great video. Make more videos like these. Our spoiled McDonald generation will be able to see our old time healthy snack.

    That's some work from ground to table... Look at that a few bundles and still change back and no American Express card with double point reward... Priceless... Let's go India hoo-hoo-hoo.

    I really want fried chicken now and I don't know why. Nice video about something most of us would never see. Not that I'm complaining, but what's up with the fried chicken sound track?

    Looks like a interesting food and I can see this being harnessed for other innovative products like perhaps eco-friendly packaging or fertilization or nutritional food sources. Need more R&D and some automation for scaling.

    I have never seen this before. Looks very tempting. Would love to try it if I see it the next time I visit India.
    The video would be more interesting if not dubbed with the background sound, but let us hear the original recording.

    Well guess they tried to make food in a different way not to mention the fact that they also tried to choose another sound for the video. Like oil, frying oil? Holy shit, you guys are indeed very special
