( ) is one of my favorite albums of all time. I like to describe it as "the opposite of hip hop"; it's absent of any recognizable words, beats, or hooks.
I saw Sigur Ros in the Winter of 2002, in Detroit, Michigan at The State theatre. The performance was unparalleled to most of what I'd experienced before. They performed "( )" and also some songs from "Ágætis Byrjun". I was in awe the entire way through. As a man, I will admit, I had tears streaming down from my eyes, a few times throughout, and I only had one weak beer. After the show, me and my friends eventually exited the building. There was a bitter cold blizzard going on outside, and as we were walking back to the car, we stopped and watched Sigur Ros in their bus, drive past. Times of awe are rare, so relish them.
Very good content. Nice flow. Enjoyable insights. We might not agree on everything but I thoroughly enjoyed listening to your views. Keep on posting. More of this type of content. Good luck Molly.
Thank you, I really appreciate it! Thanks for keeping an open mind :)
sigur ros is astonishing. I was blown out by "takk..." and its sound, sæglópur is and will be left as one of my favorite song oat. ill try to listen to their three last albums, hope i wont be disappointed
Takk is my favorite.
In my personal opinion it's aging better than Agætis byrjun and has become my favorite Sigur Rós's album, and my second favorite album of any band
I'm Icelandic so this is epic
You have such a good vibe and I love your take and reaction on music. Sigur Rós are, as you said, bery unique and i gotta be in the mood to listen to it, but when I am, it's such a powerfull sound.
*very
Thanks! I agree, I have to be in a certain mood for their music but when I am it is brilliant.
Yeah, it feels like something bigger than life is washing over you, but sometimes it gets a bit much. Thanks again for making these videos, you're awesome :) If I could give a suggestion, I would love to see a ranking of Opeth. It might be a bit heavy for you, maybe not, but in their later catalouge they got some amazing songs.
Hey, I'm willing to give any musician/genre a listen! I will keep them in mind :)
Try listen to the track Sorceress by them and see what you take from it. But hey, you do you, and I'll be here watching and supporting your channel.
This is awesome! I was able to see Sigur Ros in 2016 at the Hollywood Bowl, and it was magnificent. They also made me want to learn Icelandic (which now I know a little), but I would say my favorite is Ágætis byrjun. :)
Thanks for making this video! I think Agaetis Byrjun and Kveikur both deserve the 1st and 2nd place for sure, and it's nice to see someone who agrees! They are both the most well rounded albums, with peaks, valleys, and amazing songwriting. Loved this video so much! Been missing some good Sigur Ros content.
Aw thanks! Sigur Ros is so unique, I've never really heard another artist sound quite like them. Glad you enjoyed the video :)
Thank you for this. Interesting. I'll pick up my listening to this special band.
Great review :0 i agree with almost all of your rankings etc. So glad to see someone else appreciate Kveikur. And im also glad to finally see my baby Von not being in the bottom tier.
I would highly recommend the group Highasakite. basically the norwegian Sigur Ros in a way. Actually got introdouced to Sigur ros by them. The singer has an amazing voice and some albums like "Uranium Heart" and "Silent Treatment" is very atmospheric and beautiful. But can also be pretty dark and uptempo. Their song "Lover, were do you live" is probably one of the most beautiful songs i've ever heard.
Keep it up! 🖤
Cool, I will have to check Highasakite out!
Nice, are you gonna review their last album Átta?
yeah, lets give VON some love!
So, fairly new to your channel. Loved watching quite a few of your videos, seeing someone experience and comment on a bunch of bands/albums I've grown up loving,
But then I saw the title for this video! I love all kinds of music but am extremely partial towards metal. Very drawn to heavy guitars. But Sigur Ros is one of the most gorgeous bands I've ever heard. Their music is life changing (at least in my case).
I was first introduced to them when I was 13. My mom rented the movie Vanilla Sky from Blockbuster(that should tell you this was a while ago lol). Amazing psychological movie. Thought the soundtrack fit the movie so well, but there was one song in particular, the one at the climax of the movie. Something about the song just moved me so much.
I adored the song so much I went out and tracked down the soundtrack, but was so saddened that THE song wasn't even on it. For the life of me, I couldn't find it anywhere. Didn't even know the bands name or title of the song. Didn't help that the internet was very different then (circa 2003-2004). I even attempted googling what I thought the lyrics were, which became hilarious when I found out that not only do they sing in a different language, Icelandic, but that the song itself is sung in Vonlenska which is gibberish essentially.
Finally after 2-3 years I had found it. Bought the album and my entire world in music changed. Easily some of the most emotional soundscapes ever created.
Sigur Ros is such a unique band, they have a magical way of pairing beauty with darkness, heavy with light. Their music really does transport you, it's very vivid and dreamlike. Now I want to watch that film you mentioned, Vanilla Sky, just to hear how they use Sigur Ros in it.
nice ranking, I like it. Also, high ranking Kveikur. That's a first time.
Only watched this video just now. Good work Molly! If I may just add two points:
- Jonsi’s “bowed” electric guitar (and treatment) is what makes Sigur Ros sound so unique
- please don’t forget the live concert album “INNI”. If you like the last track in album ( ), you’ll be stunned by how it was played live!
Cool video. If you get a chance, you MUST see live show. They are amazing live. If you are interested in other Icelandic bands, check out samaris. At times, the singer sounds similar to Bjork, but they have their own sound. her latest solo album, jfdr "new dreams" albums sounds like she is coming into her own sound which I find myself listening more. Another band is worth a listen is kaelan Mikla. Curious to hear your reaction.
Thanks for the recommendations, I will have to check them out!
( ) & Valtari are A+ albums to me, they just have a flow that caries me the whole way. The growing intensity per song on ( ) is so overwelming, while Valtari grows the opposite way, less and less structure, as if you slowly going into a deep sleep. Both albums are so beautiful!
Since you ranked Von so high I have to give their debut another try, I never really cared much for that one up until now.
When I was a teenager I had a sigur ros cd that I recorded with songs downloaded from eMule and Ares 🤭😆🤘😎. Thanks for the video.👍🎊🎉
I remember when i first heard Sigur Ros. I was a Pizza Delivery guy in my early 20s in Washington State. I'd drive around dropping off pies and scurrying back to my car to escape the forever overcast of the pacific north west. I'd always be listening to something to hold me over through the hum drum of the frenzied commute. On this particular day I was dialed into the local station that played bands that weren't on any particular list and Starálfur came on. It was about around the time the brass section come in that my ears were fixated on the hopeful melodies blaring through the speakers, then the climax afterwards with the the delightfully uplifting string section. I almost pulled over because the rain on my windshield was obstructing my view but so was the water that appeared in my eyes.
I thought I was one of the only people that LOVES deftones, sigur ros, mars volta, the marias and the Babadook! :)
Nice to know there's other people who share my obsessions, haha! :D
Nice video, cool review! Sigur Rós are my fav band of all time. I recommend their documentary ‘Heima’ and also their concert from the Walt Disney Concert Hall in 2017
Glad you enjoyed it! I had no idea they had a documentary, I'll have to check it out.
@@mollyesanborn They also did a concert film called ‘Inni’, that one is great too. Here is the Walt Disney concert, one of their best show of all time imo

Their show at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle last night, Sat May 14th was absolutely amazing! They were quite loud, but somehow relaxing and so joyous
Nice, you got to see them live! I'm sure that was quite the experience.
Von + reading Uzumaki is so kino
Also check out Under Byens older works, I can tell you would like them.
never heard of Sigur Ròs but damn might check them out after 😍
They're definitely worth a listen!
Paused immediateley, just to say I have a tattoo of 'Untitled/Bracktes' (2002) on my arm :-)
That's awesome!
If you liked Sigur Ros, you should give a chance to MUM. They're an Icelandic band and they are kinda similar to Sigur Ros (in a way) but they're more experimental.
You can find a little bit of everything in their works: dream pop, ambient, post rock, dark, glitch, "indietronic", "folktronic" and experimental stuff in general.
I absolutely love them, especially their 2nd album "Finally We Are No One" which I STRONGLY recommend to you as a starting point. I mean, it's an absolute masterpiece and you can't go wrong with it. It's also my favourite (probably) album of all time, so... I can assure you it's good XD.
Their other albums are also incredible, but some of them can be hard to listen to at first.
Nice video BTW :)
Thank you for the recommendation, MUM sounds like a really fascinating band. I'll check them out :)
It's interesting to see that you enjoyed von as much as you did.
Great list! Want to check another Icelandic band, try Vok. They have a cool vibe...sort of jazzy pop with synth undertones. So good.
Would love to know where hvarf/heim lands in your rankings! Hljomalind, I Gaer and especially the re-recorded Hafsol are Sigur Ros classics and as far as I’m concerned the acoustic version of agaetis byrjun is the definitive version. Great video and insights!
I think you should check Arca, she is a venezuelan experimental artist and she reminds me a lot Aphex Twin and Bjork
Thanks for the suggestion, I'll have to give her stuff a listen!
Putting Von in A tier is a bold take, but I kind of agree. I think it's a pretty underrated album with a unique atmosphere. Agaetis Byrjun is definitely a 10/10 album for me. It's just so beautiful from start to finish. I've listened to ( ) and Takk, but it's been so long that I don't really remember them that much, but maybe I should relisten to them.
The third album you’re talking about it is called untitled!!
Thats my boys 🇮🇸
Sigur Ros is a legendary group
Ok...sigur ros...this is big time music right here...
Sigur Ros is definitely in my top two bands of all time. The other is Of Montreal. If you want a longer ranking video, you could do all of their 17 albums!
I'm not familiar with Of Montreal, I'll check them out! Thanks for the suggestion :)
SR is good, but you should check out the band credited with inventing the post-rock genera, Slint. They were basically teenagers in the late 80's/early 90's when they created this genera of music. Spiderland is their masterpiece. This is a must listen to as a music nerd. Cheers!
Awesome video, can i sugest a ranking on dead poet society or the mars volta thnx for the videos
Glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for the recommendations, I'll have to give em a listen :p
Hey whattup. Another interesting artist is Julian Casablancas, known for The Strokes and The Voidz. The downside is that he may be way too depressing for some. For an interesting and short listen, I'd recommend his solo album "Phrazes for the Young". If you want to hear more, try either "Tyrrany" or "Virtue" released under The Voidz. "Angles" under The Strokes is a more straightforward rock album. His first album "Is This It" was highly acclaimed, though pretty simple and one-note. "First Impressions of Earth" is a monster. Lots of variety and interesting stuff, but again, possibly way too depressed for most people to relate to. And finally, his latest Strokes album "The New Abnormal" has been getting a lot of hype (produced by Rick Rubin, who also produced System of a Down), but honestly, it's just his most desperate cry for help yet, and not his best art.
Hey, thinking about this some more.... you know, I haven't even listened to Virtue or Tyranny in their entireties. I just know that there are interesting songs (and videos) from them. I guess maybe his strongest album, altogether, is "First Impressions of Earth". The whole thing is majestic and cinematic, and fits together like a movie. Although, it's a lot to commit to, if it isn't your style. But it's certainly the most personal one for me. It had an absolutely beautiful lyric booklet, too. I was crying by the 6th song, and never stopped. When the CD looped back the the first song, I thought it was the next one, because I couldn't believe it was over. It's a long album, but I was so entranced that it felt short. Anyway, I feel guilty recommending albums that I can't even listen to, so, that was my personal experience. But, I'm really sensitive, and there are very few albums that I would listen to all the way through.
More related to this video, I would call "Takk" a "monster" as well. Cinematic, majestic, fits together like a movie. They came out around the same time, and these are the two albums I listened to in 2006.
Cool, thanks for the suggestions! I have heard the New Abnormal from The Strokes and actually enjoyed it. I'll have to check out the rest of his projects.
That actually makes me even more intrigued, I love cinematic and majestic music filled with emotion, definitely right up my alley in terms of musical taste!
Seen them live......amazing band
Bon Iver have 4 albums that would be a good follow up for you
I'll certainly have to give Bon Iver a listen.
Give Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust another chance. It has some of their best tracks - Ara Batur, Festival and meo suo i eyrum (my favorite)
This is the music that's dangerous to listen to while driving, because you'll invariably find yourself in the ditch in a trance
Have you listened to The Raven?
I haven't, I'll be sure to add them to my list!
u r wrong -- () is A+
() - A++
Ágætis byrjun -A++
TAkk - A
Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust - B
Valtari - A
Kveikur - B
Atta - C
"Popplagið" - A+++ :)
Hopelandic is the language the angels use when they sing to God in heaven. Therefore, ( ) is a prophecy and Jónsi is a prophet.
Takk is their best album imo.
Please, never ever call the untitled album "parenthesis" ever again, thank you 😃 ❤️❤️❤️
