This was such a great video! Firstly I appreciate you didn't have that Fish-era bias that a lot of people had, and you were so objective with all the albums. I personally prefer H's voice, style and albums so much more. Your list was great and you presented it really well - with really nice insight and objective thoughts on each album. I'm looking forward to seeing what else you have on your channel :)
Steve Hogarth's emotive, beautiful, voice blows Fish out of the water. I also love the symphonic nature of Marillion...after Fish. I love both Marillion's but to me...the present line-up is my preferred.
Excellent review mate. I have just rediscovered the majestically magnificent band Marillion. I loved and still do the first 4 albums with Fish, each one a classic in its own right and subsequently followed Fish on his solo career. I remember back in the day buying Seasons end and Holidays in Eden and thinking wow this is different but still pretty good, then life got in the way and they dropped off my radar. Just done a 2 month tour of India and then a week in “jail” on returning home to Jakarta, Indonesia and I downloaded all the remaining albums on Spotify and basically have not been able to stop listening to them.... I am indeed mad with myself that I denied myself these magnificent albums over the past almost 30 years.... Hogarth lyrics and performance as a vocalist is nothing short of magnificent and the chemistry with the rest of the band is stunning. The textures and depths of lyric, keyboards, Rothery’s guitar and the bass/ drum support is a joy to behold!!! On the cusp of displacing my all time favorite band Blue Oyster Cult.... Agree Afraid of Sunlight, Marbles and Fear are superb albums, as is Seasons End and the classic first 4, I still love Script and indeed just watched an emotionally charged H singing this.... breathtaking. Need to absorb more of the other dozen or so offerings now.....
MISPLACED CHILDHOOD IS A MASTERPIECE. for me this is the only album marillon should remain in rock history forever and be remembered as a group in eternity, if such a thing even exists, and this album, rightfully place marillon in history. it's a monumental album, as opposed to any other album of theirs
It’s a great album but when I listen to it today I think it hasn’t aged very well. It’s most people’s entry to Marillion in the 1980s so I think there is always a little nostalgia attached to it

Thanks for that, always interesting to hear other's ratings. No point disagreeing, everyone who actually clicks on this will know there are 17 albums here that are all well worth listening to. Just to say, for me, the two I'd have to put close or at the top are Marbles (partly because it was the album that switched me back on to Marillion after a very long gap) and This Strange Engine. I hear what your saying about the style of that album, but I like the folkiness, and any album that starts with "Man of a Thousand Voices", ends with "This Strange Engine" and has "Estonia" somewhere in between has got to brilliant. You could just cut it down to those three tracks and it would still be a wonderful album (and I happen to like the other tracks too).

As a fan of the band since 82 I’ve gotta say anyone trying to do a list like this is very “brave” for me the list is pretty good and your top 3 would be mine also but the order would change daily 😂 great video 👍
It would be awesome to have a poll with Marillion fans ranking each album. Each person ranking the albums in order and see which one comes out on top. Certain masterpieces will certainly rank high on everyone's list. I love both versions of Marillion but personally....the Steve Hogarth era is my favorite. The songs are more epic, symphonic, almost theatrical and that's where H's gorgeous voice shines through.
Script so low! :-( To each their own. Nice to see a different #1 other than the usual Childhood, Clutching, Marbles or Brave. So where does the new album fit? It is quite strong, Top 10 at least in my books. Great video, thanks.
Hey !!! Where did you put SCRIPT ?!? Interesting to say the least.....coming from the mouth of a big fan of the band as you say you are! Isn't that right?
Thanks for this, I reckon this year’s An Hour Before It’s Dark is their finest since Clutching at Straws. No band has a right to produce such a fine album this far into their career, it is sublime.
Split the two CDs from Happiness is the Road (which they did for retail release) and Essence is in my top 5 with Marbles and Fear whilst Hard Shoulder is close to the bottom with Somewhere Else.
My favorite band! Always hard to do a ranking of the albums, I get obsessed with an album of theirs and then listen to it over and over until I get tired of it and then another becomes my favorite... but my top pick always remains (and I must be the only fan to rank this no 1!) Anoraknophobia. I just love that album, the songs, the vibe, the mix of pop, rock and atmospheric songs, everything works for me. Second would probably be Sounds That Can't Be Made, and then it becomes harder to rank. Brave, Marbles, Afraid Of Sunlight are all equally great.
Not a fan of Hogarth era? You missing some great albums, although I know they are quite different than they were 30+ years ago with Fish. Do you like Fish solo albums?
Only 13 or so minutes so had to watch this twice. Reason being, had to eliminate the thought that this was a complete wind up list. But came to conclusion, its definitely not. Respect your list there. Here is my list. 1. Clutching 2. Script 3. Misplaced 4. Fugazi 5. Seasons 6. Brave 7. Sunlight ....... then it all sort of turned to crap for a few years......, then heard "The Leavers" 8. Fear Slowly working through the others, but A LOT of filler and total nonsense. There is no filler on ANY Fish era Marillion album......., but, respect to all our opinions.
It’s Marillion so we can’t hate band everyone likes something different - I just think there is too much over two discs and the could have trimmed it down. My preference is for the more rockier 2nd disc as I just think the first one is too laid back.
I thought you would’ve ranked marbles much higher. Some of the songs you think don’t fit the album but I think they do help tell part of the story. And each one is very unique. It’s almost flawless.
@@RockersBeerReview If you go off of the original release it flows better. And I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Angelina. I definitely wouldn’t call it week.
@@RockersBeerReview And some songs in albums aren’t supposed to necessarily sound good they’re supposed to provoke a feeling. Drilling holes is not supposed to be a good feeling song
Marillion is also one of my favorite band... Before you said you are more a H fan than a Fish fan I knew you prefer Steven as me. Brilliant songwriter, incredible voice... My favorite album is also Afraid Of Sunlight... Masterpiece
Still learning about this band. FEAR and Brave are my favorites, and they are masterpieces IMO. Enjoyed Anoraknophobia. The rest of their albums did not keep my interest, but I’ll keep listening!
Need to give marbles a good listen as it’s one of their best - invisible man, fantastic place, neverland, ocean cloud all classics and of course my favourite album afraid of sunlight - last 4 songs are marillion a best 4 songs ever!
Wow, I really respect your opinion, although my preferences would be in a very different order! I'd put Brave at #1, no question; other than that, I would have to do a lot of thinking. I'd probably put Fugazi somewhere above Misplaced Childhood, and Afraid of Sunlight would be somewhere below This Strange Engine.
Some of Marillion's music I really like, but because their music is so varied I don't think there's a single album that I really like all the way through. And sometimes, with their longer songs, there are even parts of songs that I skip through. The song This Strange Engine, I find the intro to be boringly plogging and the end to be a screaming mess, but the stuff in the middle to be wonderful. I've actually done my own audio edits of some of the longer songs to cut out the bits I don't like. The song Sounds That Can't Made, my version starts just before the synth solo as I find the first half to be dull but the 2nd half great. And yet, Gaza is one of the few long Marillion songs I feel happy to listen to all the way through.
I personally don’t find This Strange Engine boring or a mess to me it works but I know what you mean about skipping some parts of songs, but when I see those overly long songs live it just works I prefer those skippable songs played live and feel there’s no need for any skipping apart from interior Lulu I wish Marillion would just skip that song completely
Wait, wait, wait..so you will turn on TSE, and skip through parts of the song? Tge screaming at the end symbolizes the raw emotion of the piece. It's all meant to be there.
It is funny. I have watched 4 or 5 different people rate Marillion Albums, and everyone has a different top 5. Except for the low rating of script for a jesters tear this is pretty bang on. I would maybe rate Clutching at Straws as number one and FEAR as number 2. I am prejudiced towards the Fish era, however recently I have started listening to the Hogarth Albums, and to be honest I find Hogarth singing much richer and more emotional than Fish.
Marillion.com and Radiation are at the bottom for me. Marbles, Fear and Brave top three. I do agree with the last 4 songs on Afraid of sunlight.and Clutching at straws best Fish era comes in at 4.
Marillion.com is way much better than being at the bottom but Radiation remixed is a whole lot better now and I like the way Marillion were expanding and experimenting moving further away from that genesis style to become the greatest Neoprgressive band in the world but yes clutching at straws is the best fish Album no fish albums make my top ten
Absolutely correct. Regardless of who the frontman is it belongs way up there. The only album I put ahead of it is Clutching at Straws. However, only by the smallest of margins.
I have grown to love Marillion wouldn't like to rate them as it depends so much on my mood. I do love Brave especially the 5.1 mix, Marbles, Afraid of Sunlight is brilliant, Season's End, Sounds that Can't be made, FEAR. All of them are great though. Not so keen on Fish era, for me they were nothing more than a Genesis rip off, however, Misplaced Childhood showed a bit of promise but still too much like Genesis with Floyd touches but too derivative. Clutching at Straws showed more promise and the only one of that era I listen to quite a lot. Their first album especially sounds like Peter Gabriel era Genesis and single with Grendel is a Suppers Ready rip off, same time signatures and even a similar ending, it's just copying. H is a much better vocalist, emotional and original. Marillion for me are now a great band, possibly the best. The best thing that happened to them was Fish leaving.
Nice comment Stuart - I agree H is the best thing that happened to Marillion never got into Fish solo albums either although his latest (and last) is quite good
@@RockersBeerReview I'm old and had been a big fan of Genesis, I remember buying Foxtrot, then Selling England by the Pound on release. So for me Fish era Marillion was just copying. I didn't get into them properly until Brave. My love has only really grown over the last few years. Now they're aren't many days go by without listening to at least one of their albums. If you'd have asked me twenty years ago, I wouldn't have thought they would ever become one of my favourite bands, how very different they are now. I really like Marillion.com and Anoraknophobia for the experimentation but Brave was the first album I loved. I've been listening to Happiness is the Road a lot lately, the more I listen to it, the more I'm loving it, usually play both parts together as one album, it works well that way. Lovely atmosphere on volume 1, followed by excitement on volume 2. Maybe, at the moment it's between Brave, Afraid of Sunlight, Marbles and FEAR which would be their best but I couldn't decide.
I’ll be doing a ranking of the Genesis albums in January - it’s a tough one and definitely 2 distinct eras so stay tuned - will appreciate your comments
Good initiative for ranking a superb groups albums but don’t quite agree with the ranking mate. All FISH albums are comparatively superlatively to anything which the group has done with H (seasons end maybe an exception if any). However good presentation thanks
This ranking is a joke. Script is the best album they've ever made. Afraid of Sunlight first? With that bullcrap song Beautiful they even ashamed Celine Dion with this one. Gimme a break. 1. Script for a Jester's Tear (2CD ver with 19 minute long Grendel (Fair Deal Studio), their best song ever) 2. Fugazi 3. Misplaced Childhood 4. Clutching at Straws 5. Holidays in Eden (the most honest album with H, who's just a pop singer) 6. Seasons End (for the music) 7. Radiation (for the atmosphere) 8. Brave (cos you gotta be brave coming up with something like this) 9. Marbles (my gf likes it, that's all) 10. Anoraknophobia (for a brief guitar solo in Map of the World) and forget the rest
@@RockersBeerReview Hogarth is not a rock singer, they made a bad choice at the time, now it really doesn't matter. I like dark Marillion about love and lust, about sleeping pills crashed on the floor. This is the real Marillion. They should have changed their name at least.
I'm a huge fan of Marillion/Fish era. You have to realise what each album did represented on their time, masterpiece misplaced childhood was consider one of the best albums by mídia in 1985 and one of the best concept albums ever. And then in 1987 Marillian came up with clutching at straws which I consider the best rock album ever. Unfortunately Fish left, Steve Hogarth joined Marillian but his vocals did not work for me. Saying that, I do not agree with that list at all. Top four albums are The script, Fugazi, misplaced and clutching, on that order. Marillian with Steve Hogarth sounds a kind of boring, sorry it's my opinion, no one cares, I know...
Każdy kto zna się na muzyce grupy Marillion raczej nie ma wątpliwości co do tego, że Fugazi lub Clutchig jest ich największym dziełem. Reszta to ignoranci.
Why's that? Because he didn't have his albums as the Top 4? C'mon now. CAS was #2!!! Idk what you Fish people want besides everyone thinking that his stuff was the top of the Marillion catalog.
eee now.... skript is the best...Fish.... have see them5 times... first time 1984 in Kopenhagen...that way i a Marillion fan... you have now clue... Fish is Marillion...Rest my case. I a Suede.. who old are you?
Obviously you are old school - I’m more a Steve Hogarth fan but I do love clutching at straws with Fish! I’m in my late 40s so was too young to see them in 84!
If there was a button that could blow raspberries i'd be banging it like crazy! Your bias towards Hogarth shines through, Fugazi and Script are superb albums, and a damn site better than the recent lft music.
I love both eras of Marillion but fish was only there a short time and 4 albums whereas Steve Hogarth has made nearly 4x as many albums and as a great band the bias will always be on his output.
@@forestdad Rubbish, four musicians wrote the music, Fish only wrote the lyrics so they are Marillion. Fish was/is only a Peter Gabriel clone, without the imagination or quality.
I love marillion and my favorite album is the script for a jester tear. Actually the band was formed in 1978 in Aylesbury UK with original drummer Mick pointer and bassist/original singer Doug irvine and he left in 1980 and the following year in 1981 fish joined the band and became the new singer in marillion.
I lost interest in checking your ranking as soon as you ranked 13th Marillion debut album Script for a Jester's Tear. The rest of the Fish era is also very low ranked. This is very disrespectful for such a great band in their origins. Unfortunately in all these bunch of years with Hogarth they have lost identity, personality and authenticity, they have had only flashes with some great songs of the great band they were back in their origins. Even their Marillion logo has lost its identity since the second album in the Hoghart era.
Thieving Magpie double live. My personal fave.

Only 13 or so minutes so had to watch this twice. Reason being, had to eliminate the thought that this was a complete wind up list. But came to conclusion, its definitely not. Respect your list there. Here is my list.
1. Clutching
2. Script
3. Misplaced
4. Fugazi
5. Seasons
6. Brave
7. Sunlight
....... then it all sort of turned to crap for a few years......, then heard "The Leavers"
8. Fear
Slowly working through the others, but A LOT of filler and total nonsense.
There is no filler on ANY Fish era Marillion album......., but, respect to all our opinions.
Agree mostly, but I am in the minority becuause love HITR. Beautiful songs on disc 1. Essence is a top 5 Marillion song. I don't get the hate..
It’s Marillion so we can’t hate band everyone likes something different - I just think there is too much over two discs and the could have trimmed it down. My preference is for the more rockier 2nd disc as I just think the first one is too laid back.
I treat them as 2 separate albums HITR and HITR2 and one of them makes my top five
Marillion is also my favourite band. And with H. Beyond You is a great song!
Beyond you is one of my favourites too - I especially like the reimagined version in the friends with the orchestra album.
@@RockersBeerReview yes. A good version, althouh I prefer this one. Congratulation for your channel.

I thought you would’ve ranked marbles much higher. Some of the songs you think don’t fit the album but I think they do help tell part of the story. And each one is very unique. It’s almost flawless.
It’s still a great album and Neverland is one of my favourite Marillion songs. Just think drilling holes, the damage and Angelina are weak
I’m the only one on planet marzipan that put Marbles as my number one
Marbles is my number 1 and I love Angelina! Neverland and Ocean cloud are my favourites.
Listened to Neverland live at RAH. Yep - definitely need to give Marbles another shot. Thanks for the recommendation!
Its all subjective, my favourite doesn't have a weak song. Please don't touch or critique any Rush albums Please no
Yes I'm one of those people that have Marbles as my number one :)
Best song on each h album. Plz do that. Video
Brave was my first albums bought too.
`Afraid of Sunlight` is indeed a very fine album!
Can't wait for Rush mate
Rush coming tomorrow JB
@@RockersBeerReview ooohhh brilliant I reckon moving pictures at 1 2112 at 2
Oh my god this will be a fucking car crash... don't tell me COS is the best album haha
Pride of Aylesbury
I can’t even pronounce the name of that place
I'll take any of the first four - you can have the rest!
Sorry Rocker but you seem to have unfortunately mixed up two bands. Not sure how the Steve Hogarth Band has appeared in a list of Marillion's albums.
Lol...Steve Hogarth's band? Well, yes..Marillion has been his band for 30 years now. It seems that you sir have mixed up the bands.
Always a fish guy. He is the man.
Fear is a masterpiece
Absolutely correct. Regardless of who the frontman is it belongs way up there. The only album I put ahead of it is Clutching at Straws. However, only by the smallest of margins.
Is radiation the original better or worse than the remix?
The remix is much much better
Radiation Remix is fantastic, actually turn out to be number seven on my Rank. The atmosphere and the dark flow of the album is great.
A whole lot better even I can now listen to it without having to put cotton wool in my ears so it’s sounds smoother
Remixes are usually a cash grab, but not this time. It's SO much better than the original and well worth it. It makes the album listenable.
Jesus Christ Holiday in Eden better than Script!! Holy fuck...better get your ears sorted out bro
I'd put all 4 of Fish's albums in my bottom half personally. What is it with all of the Fish Marillion folks being so angry?
Mmmmm it’s like someone has stolen the very words I used on the fish v Hogarth factor...... yes this word stealing I approve
Good initiative for ranking a superb groups albums but don’t quite agree with the ranking mate. All FISH albums are comparatively superlatively to anything which the group has done with H (seasons end maybe an exception if any). However good presentation thanks
top four clutching misplaced script and fugazy i dont like hogarth era
I'm exact opposite. Keep all of the Fish.
This ranking is a joke. Script is the best album they've ever made. Afraid of Sunlight first? With that bullcrap song Beautiful they even ashamed Celine Dion with this one. Gimme a break.
1. Script for a Jester's Tear (2CD ver with 19 minute long Grendel (Fair Deal Studio), their best song ever)
2. Fugazi
3. Misplaced Childhood
4. Clutching at Straws
5. Holidays in Eden (the most honest album with H, who's just a pop singer)
6. Seasons End (for the music)
7. Radiation (for the atmosphere)
8. Brave (cos you gotta be brave coming up with something like this)
9. Marbles (my gf likes it, that's all)
10. Anoraknophobia (for a brief guitar solo in Map of the World)
and forget the rest
You’re obviously more a fan of fish than Hogarth! I did have clutching at straws second……
@@RockersBeerReview Hogarth is not a rock singer, they made a bad choice at the time, now it really doesn't matter. I like dark Marillion about love and lust, about sleeping pills crashed on the floor. This is the real Marillion. They should have changed their name at least.
13...Script.. Oeps
Song your gone is the biggest pop song. Sounds like u2
Had to stop watching and nit waste time from the moment you ranked # 13 the album Script for Jester's tears. Obviously your ranking is biased.
Script 13. What??????? The web. Come on man. That's a sick song
Fear over Misplaced 🤔
Fugazi is top 2.
O melhor disco do Marillion se chama, marbles e o segundo o brave.
Reszta to ignoranci.
cant agree with Script being so low in the ranking, and Misplaced number 7 NO NO NO!
I’m just a bigger fan of the Hogarth era and although those albums are great to me they haven’t aged as well
Yeah, that's fair enough mate that's what i like about the album rankings we are all different
Well......it's obvious, you are not a Fish fan
I like Fish but I like Hogarth more - the fact that Clutching at straws was my number 2 albums proves that.
Best i ever see...so Memory...goosebumps...
Fish is Marillion, always will be. The rest is the soft AOR of the Steve Hogarth Band.
Marillion....shit since 1988
That’s when they got good!
@@RockersBeerReview LOL
@@RockersBeerReview should never have been called Marillion after 88
@@forestdad Rubbish, four musicians wrote the music, Fish only wrote the lyrics so they are Marillion.
