This is my favorite Depeche Mode album. I've always been fascinated by 90's music, especially the late 90's. This album perfectly represents the dark, gloomy, electronic sound and mood of those times. And my all-time favorite DM song "Only When I Lose Myself" is also from that period of time. It was released a year later on "The Singles 86-98" compilation, but it really sucks that the song didn't make it onto Ultra, as it perfectly captured and developed the sound of the album.
Yes, I love that gloomy dark atmosphere as well! Somehow this record is upbeat yet coated with so much darkness as well, it's really beautiful how they merge those two elements. And I'll have to give a listen to Only When I Lose Myself, thanks for telling me about that track.
You really have to listen to dM albums chronologically to appreciate their rise to greatness and how far they’ve come. Their growth was completely organic, experimental and fused by grinding the club scenes. They didn’t chase hits, they didn’t fit a mold. They were given the leeway by a terrific, independent record label to discover their style, and it ultimately translated into something completely unique and lasting. Start from the beginning and take the journey of a band who just did it the right way.
I like your method of editing and commentary and being able to hear bits and pieces of our favorite albums with all tracks sampled (Not just the one or two that everyone else does).. I really enjoyed that
Yes! Ultra was a breaking point for how much of music excitement was coming from depeche mode. And thats why I was litteraly exited to listen next album - EXCITER... So they always was a little bit forward in time about what we expected from them.. And Exciter was this thing - a peak of electronic perfectionism and at the same time it feals like mainstream! Try to react to Exciter next. Album are realy good too. A lot of reaktor software sounds
Depeche Mode! You really do have great taste! Being that my mom was a teenager in the 80s, I heard a lot their 80s synth-pop stuff growing up. I'm not quite as familiar with the later stuff but this album is super cool. Definitely check out more of their discography. There's a lot of variety in it.
Hey, look who finally got around to checking out DM from a suggestion of mine. Shame you just missed them in concert around October and November. I paid big money to see them for the first and maybe only time to be pretty damn close to the stage. I wish Crosses came to Cleveland again on their tour, but Detroit was their nearest stop and I couldn't make it. Missed your videos for a while. Awesome that you know Massive Attack as well. I've sort of recently got into them myself.
Thanks for the comment, and for being one of the people that suggested Depeche Mode. Ultra was a fantastic listen, I loved the dark moody atmosphere paired with the more upbeat, electronic side to their sound. Definitely a strong similarity to Massive Attack (at least based on what Ultra sounds like). I'll absolutely have to give more of their albums a listen! And yeah, I'd love to see Crosses as well. I feel like they'd be pretty great to see live.
Great to see you do a Depeche Mode reaction. A legendary band! As already said, lots of great albums to check out. Violator and Songs of Faith and Devotion are my faves.
i realise what a gift it was to grow up with bands like this. i also had this epiphany with tool. you get used to clever and creative songwriting as a kid and dont even know how extraordinary this music is.
Ultra... it could honestly be my favorite Depeche Mode album with Home being my favorite song of theirs. Know what, I'm going to commit and say it indeed is my favorite Depeche Mode album. To me Home (and other parts of the album) feels like it could be a soundtrack to a Batman movie. Like Gotham City with it raining and storming urban type of feeling. Always loved how the latter 90's electronica rock music like Ultra has a darkness to it, but not in a negative sense... if that makes sense. And that's why I'm going to name Ultra my favorite Depeche Mode album. The others are excellent too! Fun times.
You absolutely nailed the description, it does indeed have a very strong movie soundtrack quality to it. That, paired with the dark atmosphere makes for such an amazing album, right up my alley with its sound. I'll definitely be checking out more of their music now!
Hearing "Barrel of a Gun" on the radio in 1997 was my real introduction to DM (though I had heard some of the 80's hits on the radio years before, I suppose). In those days, as a 15 year-old with little cash, my best option was to record it off the radio onto a cassette tape! A year later, I heard "Only When I Lose Myself" on the radio and the cycle repeated... I had to buy "The Singles 86>98" and then DM became MY band... I back-tracked to acquire everything I could from their catalogue.
A perfect and last classic Depeche Mode album, bringing redemption in their career, proving their class, the singles are small gems (especially Home), the whole thing can be called a light in the dark as you said in the subcase of the song Home :)
One of their best and sadly the last great. But they had a fine line of work from "Some Great Reward" (1984) to "Ultra" (1997) to offer. If you really want to take a deep dive, i'd recommend to go from this album back the timeline and then back to the future to their work after "Ultra". And if you do, have fun!
I have them all up to Ultra, but recently got Exciter. Yea, it's pretty different, but after a few listens I'm liking it. I second your recommendation, work yourself backwards with "Songs of Faith and Devotion" next
@@mollyesanborn "Songs of Faith and Devotion" is the "rock"-album of Depeche Mode, more guitars and organic sounds and instruments and some kind of stranger in the discography, but one of their best. Very spiritual, dark and great singing!
Hi Molly, I really like Depeche Mode. Their songs brings back memories! Me and my best friend enjoyed watching your reaction. We have fond memories listening to their songs!
Well, whoever suggested this album as the starting point for your Depeche Mode listening was pretty smart, and it is definitely not hard to see how this could have been a big influence on Chino in his +++ project. Good video as always, Molly! ❤
Yeah several people were suggesting Depeche Mode, specifically this album, in the comments on my Crosses reaction video. This was a great starting point for their music, I'm really looking forward to hearing what their other albums are going to bring to the table.
Please check out "Black Celebration" (their 1986 LP - my 2nd favourite DM album) and "Violator" (this was the fourth studio album I heard from them; it still holds a special place in my heart, and it's my mom's favourite album)
On older songs, Martin and Dave often shared lead vocals (example - "Here is the House" from their 1986 album "Black Celebration", which is by the way my second favourite Depeche Mode album)
I’m really glad I’ve discovered this reaction channel! Ultra is the album that brought me into phenomenon that is Depeche Mode and it’s one of the albums I connected with the most in my youth (42 years old here). It’s also in many ways, their most important album because it was created at a time when the band by all rights shouldn’t have even existed anymore, but it somehow brought them back from the brink. “It’s No Good” is the kind of track that so many pop groups wish they had come up with first because of its unmistakable hook. And “Home” is a track that Madonna would’ve killed to have on her Ray of Light album. Definitely check out Memento Mori, their most recent album; and follow up with Some Great Reward (1984). That’s when they started to truly become “The Mode”.
Thanks so much for checking out the channel! Ultra was a great introduction to Depeche Mode, and I'll certainly plan on diving into more of their music.
Love that you're diving into my favorite band of all time! On the cassette version of this album, which is the first format I owned, the album ended with 'Insight.' 'Jr. Painkiller' was a hidden bonus track after that dead air but was not on the album track list. Great reaction and insights (no pun intended)! Hope you continue to explore the Mode!
Ahh, that makes sense about the hidden track thing. Junior Painkiller really did just seem like an extension of Insight. And yeah, I'll certainly have to give more of Depeche Mode's albums a listen now!
Ultra is one of my favorite albums of all time and Insight is one of the best songs in my opinion. It always surprised me why that song is so unknown and never (?) played live by DM. That song has it all...
My god, you've not listened to much Depeche Mode? You're in for a treat. Black Celebration, Violator, Songs of Faith and Devotion, Music for the Masses, and Some Great Reward are all fantastic albums to do next.
Ultra is a very unique experience when you put it alongside their other bodies of work. Very captivating, very atmospheric. Loved your initial take on it. Would love to see you tackle, Songs of Faith and Devotion by DM. One of their best and often overlooked albums.
Yes, I love the atmosphere on Ultra. They really transport you with its sound and mood. I'll definitely plan on doing videos for more of their albums, including Songs Of Faith And Devotion. I'm very excited to check it out!
Love that youre getting into my favourite band. Ultra for sure is an underrated album in a brilliant discography. ❤ PS. The reason for the 1.5 min dead air on Insight is cause the last (12th) song was a hidden track on the CD that starts playing if you just let Insight play on.
Thanks for watching the reaction! This was a great introduction to Depeche Mode and I am looking forward to diving further into their discography. And that makes a lot of sense about the hidden track at the end, good to know!
Girl! You have started with one of their more complex albums to get into them. In my opinion, as a fan who invited many people to become DM fans, You should experience their evolution starting from "Black Celebration" or "Music for the masses" until songs of fauth or Devotion. If you leave a full reaction somewhere I would see it without a doubt. I've been following you for a while and You catch a lot of things many people would not. Congrats for that!
Depeche Mode was EMO before EMO was cool. These guys are the Godfathers of ELECTRONICA. Dave Gahan's baritone vocals are iconic. Martin Gore harmonies with Dave are sublime. I have 87 Depeche Mode tracks in my playlist. Depeche Mode is a gift from the 80's. More Depeche Mode, please. 🤞✌️
@3Clod DM, The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees are definitely the precursors to todays goth/emo/synthpop/EBM music. They were just considered to be New Wave at the time, though. Don't be sad and get all EMO on me. LOL. ✌️
This is a survival mode album. The singer almost died of an overdose before the recording of this record. My personal fav from them and even i am more of a metal fan, DM are constantly in my earphones, specially this album. NIN, Manson, Rammstein all influenced by Depeche Mode.
Yeah, I picked Ultra because it was suggested a lot on my Crosses reaction video as being an influential album for Chino Moreno of Deftones. I'll absolutely have to do more of Depeche Mode's albums though, if Ultra is any indication I'm in for a treat! And I'll try and get to more Incubus soon as well :)

I'm happy you've been enjoying the videos! And thanks so much for the suggestion, I'll make sure that The Sundays - Blind is on my list of albums to check out :)
Thanks for watching! I'm glad to finally be dipping my toes into Depeche Mode, hearing Ultra makes me very excited to check out more of their albums now. And I've got Odelay by Beck on my list :)
Gotta say one thing I really appreciate about your channel is the diversity of genres. Lots of reaction channels just jump for the newest releases by the most popular acts because they generates more views/attention. Have you ever heard of Infectious Grooves? They're Mike Muir's (Suicidal Tendencies) side project. Seeing how you've reacted to Mr. Bungle, I think you'd enjoy their music too. P.S. What song is that riff in your intros from?
Thanks! I enjoy listening to a lot of different styles and genres of music so I try and include a fairly wide range on the channel. I have not heard of Infectious Grooves before, I'll have to look into their music. And the intro riff is a free iMovie sound clip titled "Torn Jeans Short" haha! It's just in the free audio library that comes with iMovie.
Hey Molly. This album was made just after the departure of bandmember Alan Wilder. Also, Dave Gahan (front singer) was addicted to drugs and barely came to the studio sessions. For example, sister of night was made over seperate weeks because Dave was not able to sing all lyrics. If you know this and listen to this track again you really feel the pain and suffering that Dave was in at that time. Great track!!!!
Ahh I'm so excited to dive deeper into their discography now! A lot of people keep suggesting Songs Of Faith And Devotion, I'll definitely have to give that one a listen soon.
You can clearly see the influence Depeche Mode had on Nine Inch Nails (and vice versa) with this album: the first track alone sounds like Closer or Head Like A Hole. Trent Reznor and Dave Gahan had this creative feedback loop for a few years. Depeche mode use some of the most interesting melodic and harmonic combinations in modern music. Gahan makes use of a lot of different (non-standard) chord progressions, keys, and modes, and _loves_ contrast, dissonance, and juxtaposition. Seriously interesting music for their entire catalogue. There's a Canadian band, The Tea Party, that is, in a lot of ways, like DM, but also completely unlike them. Highly recommend giving them a listen. Transmission is great, The Tea Party is an amazing debut album, Splendor Solis is a fantastic sophomore album, and Edges of Twilight is a masterpiece.
Love that you are getting into Depeche Mode. They are one of the best things to come out of the 80s. Are you ever going to check out some older bands? I would love to see you listen to Pink Floyd.
It is so strange that you commented this... I just filmed a Pink Floyd reaction a few days ago so stay tuned for it! And yeah Depeche Mode is awesome, I wish I had gotten into their music earlier on but at least I'm finally checking it out. I'm looking forward to hearing more of their albums now.
This was recorded shortly after the lead singer Dave Gahan’s two near-death moments due to a very bad heroine addiction. Key member Alan Wilder had also left a couple of years prior, so the album was almost not even made because the band was in disarray (not to mention songwriter Martin Gore’s personal struggles too). It makes for such a beautiful yet dark album. Its great but I’d also definitely recommend the previous two DM albums!
Ultra is such a beautiful and well produced album, I never would have guessed all of that was going on during the recording process. That really explains the dark tone that it has. I'll definitely have to check out the two albums preceding Ultra as well, I'd love to hear them.
Marilyn Manson according to Eddie trunk has finished an album so it'd be a perfect time to start checking out his catalog obviously starting with the first one.
Glad to hear you're optimistic about "Ultra." Depeche Mode are among the greats. Can't wait to hear what you think about their other albums...."Songs of Faith and Devotion" if I'm being selfish.
More Depeche Mode, please! Thanks for this wonderful reaction. You really need to listen to their entire catalog, but you should go next to Violator, their perfect album from 1990 (and probably the best album released that year by anyone). By the time they recorded Ultra, none of those sounds they use were experimental, as they've been playing with different sounds since the early 1980s. They're definitely one of the most sonically interesting bands of the 20th century.
Thanks for the comment! Yeah I'll definitely plan on doing more of Depeche Mode's albums, Violator sounds like another one definitely worth checking out soon :)
Very nice reaction to this album. I recommend to react to the previous album, Songs of Faith and Devotion, from 1993, which is a classic of the 1990‘s and sounds completely different. It will give you an idea of how diverse DM‘s albums are and how courageously the band experimented in their prime despite risking their commercial success. Real masters of sound.
That crying guitar on 'Home' always get me. I remember studying to this music freshman year of collage. Love this album. Thought about checking out anything by Skinny Puppy?
It's been 3 months since your last Megadeth album review. You need to review Megadeth's first album, 'Killing is my Business...' and their third album, 'So Good, So Far, So What' to complete the first 5 Megadeth albums.
I suggest their following album (it doesn't matter the order, but if you respect the chronological, you can see the evolution): some great reward, black celebration, music for the masses, violator (the most famous). Compliments for your analysis of the album ❤

Ooh I'm excited to check them all out! I loved Ultra so I'm sure the rest of their albums will be amazing as well.
Very nice. Another fantastic band. This is a great album.
Yeah this album was awesome! I'll definitely have to check out more of Depeche Mode's music.
I hope one day you dive into Nine Inch Nails and Trent Reznors film scores
@@Jefwth1F I've already fallen down that rabbit hole... ruclips.net/video/UBLrKXAdvic/видео.htmlsi=hSsTL7LB3epKj125
Boy I wish I could go back and listen to all of NIN's catalogue for the first time. That would be such a fantastic experience. I had heard all of their records already before I started the channel though. In fact one of my first videos was a discography ranking for Nine Inch Nails. ruclips.net/video/QtCtn_IZDy0/видео.htmlsi=lYqnrtcbQ5lNk9Rf
I figured you already listened to Trent's genius works of art.
Black Celebration, Violator and Songs of Faith and Devotion are my Depeche Mode suggestions to Molly.
Good to know! I am excited to hear all of those albums, I'll definitely plan on doing more Depeche Mode reactions :)
My favourite album of all time. Thanks for the review.
It is indeed an amazing album, thanks for checking out the reaction :)
Useless is my favorite Depeche Mode song. So underrated. The atmosphere is incredible.
One of my favorites too, such an amazing track!
This album is very underrated. Thank-You so much for giving your thoughts on this album. It was amazing seeing Your reaction!.
Thanks so much, I'm glad you enjoyed the reaction :)
I like your method of editing and commentary and being able to hear bits and pieces of our favorite albums with all tracks sampled (Not just the one or two that everyone else does).. I really enjoyed that
Oh awesome, glad you're enjoying the format! Thanks for checking out the channel :)
Great reaction. Greets from germany...my favourite band since 1983 ❤
Thanks for watching! :)
Ultra is the perfect soundtrack for a Sunday morning hangover.
Yeah I love the tone on Ultra, I'm really excited to dive further into their music now and see what else they're going to bring to the table.
Thank you for very intelligent and well formulated reactions in words. 👍
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed the reaction :)
i realise what a gift it was to grow up with bands like this. i also had this epiphany with tool. you get used to clever and creative songwriting as a kid and dont even know how extraordinary this music is.
Yeah, I wish that I had gotten into some of these bands like Depeche Mode and Tool earlier on but oh well, I suppose later is better than never.
Ufff these guys are legends i know almost all the lyrics of this album by heart ( ❤)
Ultra... it could honestly be my favorite Depeche Mode album with Home being my favorite song of theirs.
Yes, such a beautiful record! Depeche Mode really created something special with this one.
As so many before me have, I too have to give my voice for their album Songs of Faith and Devotion! Its an absolute masterpiece.
"I just heard some sort of sound, I don't even know what it was though." 😂 Perfect Molly. 👍💯
I always figured it's the sound of the guitar being plugged in, I often get a similar sound when plugging/unplugging a amp'ed up guitar
Haha, glad you enjoyed the reaction! :)
That's a good idea, to work my way backward through their discography. I'd definitely love to hear more of their albums!
@@mollyesanborn "Songs of Faith and Devotion" is the "rock"-album of Depeche Mode, more guitars and organic sounds and instruments and some kind of stranger in the discography, but one of their best. Very spiritual, dark and great singing!
Definitely one of the Top 10 albums of the 90's and my favorite DM album (tied with Black Celebration).
Ultra was such a great introduction to Depeche Mode! I'll definitely have to give more of their albums a listen now.
Listen to Violator, Music of the Masses, A Broken Flame, Black Celebration, etc. So many good ones.
I'll definitely have to do more of Depeche Mode's albums, I look forward o hearing them! :)
Hi Molly, I really like Depeche Mode. Their songs brings back memories! Me and my best friend enjoyed watching your reaction. We have fond memories listening to their songs!
That's so awesome, I'm glad the video brought back some fond memories! :)
17:15. In the Bottom Line the difference is that is another member singing. It's not Dave Gahan but Martin Gore (he also sings Home)
Ahhh, I did not realize that! That vocal tone change makes a lot more sense now.
My favorite album of all time. Thank you.
Thank you, Molly!
Thanks for watching! ❤️
Cool reaction). Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it! :)
Great review/reaction as always!
Very eager for more on this group!
By the way, "Home" & "The Bottom Line" are sung by Martin Lee Gore. The rest of the album, except for instrumentals, is sung by Dave Gahan
Thank you for letting me know :)
@@mollyesanborn You're welcome. By the way, Martin Gore is the main composer / songwriter of this AMAZING band
Albums in the 90's used to do that a lot for some reason.
Ultra is one of my favorite albums of all time and Insight is one of the best songs in my opinion. It always surprised me why that song is so unknown and never (?) played live by DM. That song has it all...
20:50 There's a 7+ minute version called Painkiller it's on the deluxe edition. Same but a little longer
Ah, thanks for the explanation!
My god, you've not listened to much Depeche Mode? You're in for a treat. Black Celebration, Violator, Songs of Faith and Devotion, Music for the Masses, and Some Great Reward are all fantastic albums to do next.
Yes, I'm very excited to hear more from them!
My top 3 Depeche Mode albums are Black Celebration, Songs of Faith and Devotion, and Violator.
I'm looking forward to hearing all three! :)
@@mollyesanborn sweet - looking forward to seeing the videos.
Jeez, i dig all of their albums
I can't wait to hear more from them!
PS.
Gary Numan?
@@heyskipj of course Gary is in that category.
calling depeche mode emo is such a sad blasphemy... I'm sad really, for you
Yeah I'm loving what I'm hearing so far! I'll definitely have to do more Depeche Mode on the channel :)
@3Clod DM, The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees are definitely the precursors to todays goth/emo/synthpop/EBM music. They were just considered to be New Wave at the time, though.
Don't be sad and get all EMO on me. LOL. ✌️
What a great description of the songs!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video :)
Nice video! I like the way you're reviewing it! You should review the "Songs Of Faith And Devotion" or the "Delta Machine"!!!
This is a survival mode album. The singer almost died of an overdose before the recording of this record.
My personal fav from them and even i am more of a metal fan, DM are constantly in my earphones, specially this album.
NIN, Manson, Rammstein all influenced by Depeche Mode.
Keep the good content, love your thoughts on this classic albums
Thanks so much! :)
Great album they have so much good material
Yeah I'm so excited to dive into more of their albums now!
Amazing album
Yes, this one was an amazing listen!
One of my favorite bands. Ultra is a weird album to start with. Violator is a perfect album. Is Morning View by Incubus on the way?
Yeah, I picked Ultra because it was suggested a lot on my Crosses reaction video as being an influential album for Chino Moreno of Deftones. I'll absolutely have to do more of Depeche Mode's albums though, if Ultra is any indication I'm in for a treat! And I'll try and get to more Incubus soon as well :)
My recommendations:
The Stone Roses - Turns Into Stone
Japan - Gentlemen Take Polaroids
Happy Mondays - Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches
Disco Inferno - The 5 EPs
Thanks for the list! I will keep all of these in mind :)
A couple of other bands that you might enjoy are The Afghan Whigs, The Charlatans UK, and Morphine
Thank you for the suggestions! I will make sure that they are all on my list.
Ultra - their best album!
This one is pretty great, I loved listening to it!
Hi molly. Love your videos. Especially the Pearl jam and Alice in chains ones. I would love to recommend the Sundays - Blind album. It’s brilliant. I only recently discovered it myself and I’m hooked. Reckon it will be right up your street! Keep the reactions coming! Love from the UK ❤
I'm happy you've been enjoying the videos! And thanks so much for the suggestion, I'll make sure that The Sundays - Blind is on my list of albums to check out :)
"It's No Good" is my fav track here.
Ultra has a whole different meaning in Europe, and even the world. Its fun. No instruments, but a lot of vocal.
Awesome pick, I listened that album when I was 13th maybe, and I really hope you listen to Odelay by Beck! Great to have another video reaction!
There is SO much depeche more that's absolutely fantastic. I would also highly recommend songs of faith and devotion.
Ooh good to know! I am planning on getting to some Marilyn Manson on the channel very soon, I'm excited to dive into their music.
Definitely give Music For The Masses and also Violator a listen. They are arguably the greatest Depeche Mode albums.
Great album - but Violator is one of the best albums of all time. An absolute must listen.
I look forward to hearing it!
You gotta do Songs of Faith and Devotion!!
I'll definitely plan on doing a reaction to it! :)
Thanks Molly for another good video
I appreciate you, thanks for watching! ❤
Revisiting here, I never noticed before how much this album sounds like mid-90s U2.
Absolutely, I look forward to hearing it! :)
I'd love to see you react to Playing The Angel. ❤
Oh, no... this woman likes a lot of the same music that I love and I can't avoid falling in love with her more and more 😳.
That crying guitar on 'Home' always get me. I remember studying to this music freshman year of collage. Love this album.
Thought about checking out anything by Skinny Puppy?
I've had Skinny Puppy on my list to check out for quite some time now... I'll try and get to a reaction for them soon! :)
thats awesome!! you should react to all type o negative albums. it would be so great!!
I'll definitely have to consider doing more Type O Negative in the future :)
It's been 3 months since your last Megadeth album review. You need to review Megadeth's first album, 'Killing is my Business...' and their third album, 'So Good, So Far, So What' to complete the first 5 Megadeth albums.
Ahh yes, you remind me how fast time flies! I will definitely have to get to some more Megadeth soon on the channel :)
The first half of this album is significantly more imaginative and creative than the second half.
I suggest their following album (it doesn't matter the order, but if you respect the chronological, you can see the evolution): some great reward, black celebration, music for the masses, violator (the most famous). Compliments for your analysis of the album ❤
Please react to Playing the Angel! It's my favorite Depeche Mode album, and one of my favorites of all time!
You should liste to "Songs of Faith and Devotion" and even the live version is just more darker
Absolutely, I'd love to hear that album as well!
@@mollyesanborn You won't regret it, I assure you, if that's the case, I'll retire from RUclips. lol
