    I'm on a standard 9th Gen M1 and apart from a couple of crashes (which may have been user related), it's been a mostly painless experience, performance wise. I did try importing a random midi file with quite a few tracks, which failed and came up with an out of memory error (every other DAW works fine with the file). It was loading mostly studio instruments but I'd also forgotten that I had that AI Rap Generator running in the background too. So that was hopefully the cause and I'll try again later tonight.
    The UI and workflow aren't my favourite but it's still very early days. I plan on using the free month to it's full before deciding for definite but intial thoughts say it's not for me. I can see a lot of other folks really loving it though as it does seem powerful.

    I have an iPad Pro m1 with 1TB and 16gb of ram and it threw up a system overload message on a 9 track midi arrangement that I threw a ton of effects on each track. Closed out all my open apps and it worked fine…so it’s very sensitive to memory demands. Also, even though I am enjoying Logic and will continue to use it, it is a major(!!!) fail for me in that they didn’t include score editing, a piano roll is not nearly as efficient at looking at harmonic structure over a large range of notes as a score is. I use the score editor to make decisions about arranging and the piano roll for fine tuning timing on various tracks.

      I got it for my iPad 9th Gen, since I produce exclusively on iPad, and my projects are so complex that my iPad crashes multiple times in ten minutes. Also battery life is terrible when using logic with big projects. It is nice to just work on music on the couch, away from the studio. I can’t use my interface with my guitar without being at the studio obviously though.

    Hadn't seen that logic demo before. I opened it on my base-ultra (ultra but with only 48-core GPU) and it plays all the tracks unmuted at about 40% cpu accross all the CPU cores, at 128 samples buffer on the internal speaker (don't have my audio interface attached) Mac Studio is really way more than I need haha. Anyway enjoying your videos on the new iPad version, and I love in the real world how well it performs on my mini, super usable and fits in my sling bag with the OP-1 Field. The only thing I hope they add is a midi event list editor for me, and a score editor for others.

But I don’t find it irritating at all as it auto saves and reopens the project quickly every time, it’s been more than a year with iPad 9..and I have no complaints for its processor or battery. Hi -- I'm a musician and I'm trying to decide between the 11 inch and 13 inch iPad Air 6. I mostly create video productions comprised of voice and acoustic guitar, but sometimes do projects that crank up to about 20 tracks, with submixes. I do like the more portable size of the 11", but am I likely to find the 11" a bit cramped for the more multi track projects?

  • @emiel333
    @emiel333 Год назад +1

    I’ve managed to run the Logic Pro benchmark test on my device. I can run 20 tracks without problems. By unmuting track 21, it stops by displaying the overload message. I have an iPad Pro 2020 with A12Z chip and 6GB RAM. When loading up the demo song (with over 80 tracks), the CPU meter is around the first letter and memory around the third letter. Pretty impressive for this old iPad Pro if you ask me!

    I'm curious about what sort of bottleneck is differentiating with that benchmark project between the iPad and MacOS. As you say, probably the lack of cores for starters, and maybe the way that memory is handled on each device, even though both use Apple Silicon...I"m just speculating on that. I have an 11" M1 iPad Pro, so good to see that there appears to be no bottlenecking from projects created on the device. I plan to get to know Logic Pro for the iPad over the coming days. Thanks for the demo and the info, Patrick!

    • @jolondixon2311
      @jolondixon2311 Год назад +2

      I think a fairer test is to set the mac mini to 512 samples as buffer size. I think the main bottleneck could be heat. The mac mini has a fan, heat sinks and more room for heat dissipation. The iPad will give up quick so that the SOC won’t melt. The benchmark used all software instruments and effect and no samples/WAVs so the main load is on the CPU cores.

    Really great video... For those guys who have used Logic (desktop) for a long time I think the iPad version is a bit underwhelming. I guess what everyone having a desktop setup would enjoy is doing some editing etc. on the go on their iPad but the midi and audio editing with the pencil in reality simply is not as a nice experience as shown in the promo videos and lots of keyboard shortcuts aren't available... Let's see - maybe future iterations will have improved features.

    • @hsitz
      @hsitz Год назад

      Sure, but you can always use an iPad with keyboard and mouse if you want, all the same keyboard shortcuts seem to be in iPad version. So you can use keyboard/mouse if you want, use touch interface when more appropriate. Of course, if you're a desktop Logic user I don't know why you'd stop using desktop. Use desktop when appropriate and use iPad version when appropriate.

    • @mattbantle
      @mattbantle Год назад

      @@hsitz Unfortunately, that is not true. There is only a very limited amount of (desktop-) standard keyboard shortcuts available and even basic ones (for rewinding and moving forward = "," and "." if you're familiar with the Logic shortcuts) aren't available. It's not different - it's just less pro.

    • @hsitz
      @hsitz Год назад

      @@mattbantle Thanks for the correction. Seems to me like quite a few are available, certainly many common ones. But there's plenty that's not quite there yet on iPad version that I expect to be added as time goes on, possibly one of the reasons it's licensed on subscription basis, users will certainly be expecting improvements. Will be interesting to see how it develops over next few months, next year, next few years. . . .
      Also, I'm wondering what promos you've seen with Apple Pencil being used with Logic Pro? I haven't seen any yet, and I'm mostly part of iPad world where I haven't noticed anyone even talking about using a pencil. A pencil is useful, I"m sure, but Apple seems to have done whatever it could to optimize for use with thick, stubby fingers.

    • @mattbantle
      @mattbantle Год назад

      @@hsitz I'm generally very positive when it comes to bringing Logic to iPad and I'm sure future iterations will really improve what has already been a great start. I realise now that my comments may have sounded more negative than I had intended them to be :) The pencil is a great thing but when it comes to editing IMO the accuracy of seeing an actual mouse pointer (as opposed to a re-sizable dot on the iPad) gets faster results. But hey... let's stay tuned - and some of the new/old features will always be up to each and everyone's personal taste! I hope Logic Pro for iPad will turn into a similar success as the desktop version.

    but for a real world test you need to tell us if you had other apps open in the background (which would’ve diminished performance capabilities) or if you cleared out all other apps for your test. im betting it makes a big difference

    Oooooh thanks, this is going to be helpful! In a future video, maybe a more in-depth GUI/scaling comparison? 🥰8.3" vs 11" vs 12.9"
    I plan to go for an iPad Pro 11" from 2020 (with A12Z + 6GB Ram). That should do the job for 20-30 tracks with stock synths. The current M1/M2 Pros are too expensive for me and the Air 4/5 lack Quad Speakers, 120Hz, FaceID and the better mics.

      I own an iPad Pro 11” from 2020 with the A12Z chip. I did the benchmark test, and it was able to run 20 tracks (in Patrick’s video, the iPad Mini with A15 chip only played 9 tracks). In real world usage it can handle a lot more than the 20 to 30 tracks you’re assuming. It runs the demo track (80+ tracks and a ton of plug-ins) flawlessly. The CPU and memory meter are very close to the performance of the M1 and M2 iPad Pro. So I think it’s a good choice!

    I just found the iPad is ridiculous waste of money for music production even with Logic Pro. You don't really have that portability. You have much more portability with a laptop. You can't use the pencil if you don't put it flat over your desk or knees but after a little while all your body aches in pain. If you want to use a MIDI keyboard then things get even more weird, and if you want portability then you need to be attaching dongles for low latency, plus dongles for MIDI, cables for headphones, power banks, and more. Yes, I was happy at least I bought the last iPad Pro with an audio jack, until now that I cannot even run Logic Pro. What a waste of time and money. Good move anyway for bringing great plugins to iOS/iPadOS, like Modartt Pianoteq which did it even before the announcement of Logic Pro for the iPad, and you only pay it once, unlike Logic Pro. Thanks for holding my rant, good video anyway. I wished you had at least compared the performance of your Mac Mini using 512 buffer sample to play on the same field, but anyway, Apple is selling only promises that never get real.

    iPad Pro 12.9" bought brand new as the latest model to Apple in late summer 2018, A10X Fusion processor, much much faster processor than the Bionic, cannot RUN Logic Pro for iPad because Apple wants me to buy a new iPad Pro 12.9" for twice the price in less than 5 years, $1,600, cool, but I will just stop using Apple products due to this a many other money leeching Apple black-ops, as well as so many bugs, lack of features and lack of compatibility in the own Apple ecosystem everywhere, no audio jack, and many more things that are constantly screwing me.
