      In what universe is Vancouver considered the underdog? They won the division + swept Edmonton and outscored them 21-7 in the regular season. Basically the canucks did exactly what they did to the Oilers in the regular season. The difference was a terrible first period and some soft goals by Silovs. After that the canucks took control and controlled for the rest of the game just like they did all year long against the Oil. The canucks simply match up really well against this team and can "out discipline" them when it comes to maintaining structure.
    If the canucks can clean up their start and be more effective early, and Silovs can calm himself (if he's the starter) and play the way he did against the Preds (no soft goals), the canucks will have an excellent chance to control this whole series.
    I said this before but if the canucks win this series, anyone who is "surprised" by that, wasn't paying attention. The canucks have been doing this ALL year long. They rarely go more than a game or two without getting back to their system and structure. I would consider this game 1 as a bad game for their structure and I think they'll be even more disciplined for game 2. Seeing game 1 as a "mistake".

    • @J-jizzy_
      @J-jizzy_ 10 дней назад +3

      Their poor defensive structure last 1.25 periods and then it was great ever since. The score at the end of the second period really didn’t show the control the Canucks had in the second. Then it just continued throughout the third

    • @doublestrokeroll
      @doublestrokeroll 10 дней назад +7

      They were playing terrible because the canucks were playing well. This game, in many ways was proof the regular season DOES matter. The canucks did to the Oilers exactly what they did all season long. Controlled the play and "out systemed" the Oilers. Literally the 2nd half of the game was under canucks control. The problem was the nerves at the beginning and Silovs playing pretty badly. In the regular season the canucks never had bad goal tending vs the Oilers. So all the canucks need to do is maintain this style of play and hope Silovs can rebound to his Nashville form (Or DeSmith comes back and plays like he can) and the canucks should be in very good shape.
      For whatever reason the Oilers really struggle with the Canucks system and the Oilers flaws that were exposed all season by the canucks were exposed again. Lack of strong systems play and discipline to it, a weak D core, and bad goal tending.
      The only surprise in this game was the horrible beginning the canucks had to it and how bad Silovs played. To anyone who's been paying attention all year long, this was a mediocre canuck game and they're capable of way better than this.

    Rarely anyone gave the Canucks much of a thought in this series, with a lot people saying this was gonna be a sweep or a 5 game series. I think it's at least going 6, if not 7 games and a possible upset(Oilers put pressure on themselves last season and came out entirely flat to start, it's not inconceivable that if the Canucks steal game 2 that they could just outright be living rent free in their heads and priming them for a major implosion/upset).
    I keep saying everywhere that this Canucks team might not be built to win the cup, but they also have no clue as to how to give up and know when they're beat. The Nashville series just taught them that if they keep pushing, they've got the raw pieces to steal a game even when they're down and playing against a punishing grinding defensive team. They can't rely on these types of rallies as they know bounces can and will work against them, but they've built their team identity on not giving up on plays.
    If their opponent keeps taking it for granted that they can just stomp on their throats and they'll stop fighting, then these Canucks will show them how poor a decision that's gonna turn out to be. Either they find the will and ruthlessness to put the Canucks down, or they're only gonna get grittier as they get that grindset rewarded.

      If vancouver wins game 2, theres no way oilers aren't rattled a little bit. not only because it will start to look like a repeat, but at that poiint you can't really say "the regular season sweep doesn't matter."
      Do I think it means canucks sweep? Nah. I still think that IF the canucks win, its in 7. But I also think the oilers aren't getting less than 6.

    Always good to have an unbiased opinion on the series. I'm sure, as a Calgary fan, you may hate the Oilers more than the Canucks. But I know some Calgary fans who HATE the Canucks. So maybe equal hatred?

    Vancouver struggled with Nashville, a shot blocking team. Should not be the case with the Oilers and their high flying forwards but that will open up plenty of options for Vancouver on the transition.

    Think thats a key part everyone saying "this isnt the regular season" gets wrong. Oilers got their ass handed to them to start and Im sure they played at a much higher intensity to try and get those wins vs the Canucks but failed

    I think the Canucks are the sleeper team of the playoffs, they didn't fire against the Preds but showed time and time again they could get it done and step up when it mattered, against a lot of adversity and miserly a defense. And again they showed that in game 1 against the Oilers. That resilience counts for a lot in the playoffs. The Oilers won't be confident in any situation in Round 2. That and Petterson and others still have levels higher to go that they reached during the regular season.
