  • @dw1784
    @dw1784 Месяц назад +10

    Sheldon Keefe will take a lot of heat for this era. He is deserving of a fair share. He was outcoached in the playoffs multiple times. It shows with match-ups, strategies, ice time etc. However, he was stuck with a group of good players... that's it... He never received players who were leaders and workhorses. Good players win in the regular season. Leaders find ways to outwork their opposing line on the ice. It never happened in the playoffs. Coaching strategy is one thing, but coaching the will to want it more than the guy on the other side of the face-off dot is a different story. Toronto is full of players who haven't wanted to work hard enough to achieve what they say they want. They don't even act pissed off when they lose. They should have been pissed off years ago and been hungry. They don't play like a hungry group. They play like immature rich kids who are happy to enjoy a wealthy life outside of hockey.
    You can't even say they were close this year because they went to OT. They still ended up 13 wins short of the goal. They have never been close. Even a team getting swept in the Conference Finals is only getting halfway there. The Leafs need character, leadership, and workhorses. Very few coaches can fix that when a player is over 26 years old and currently making millions.

      @dw1784 Месяц назад +1

      @jaystyx5134 Did you notice that Toronto finished 5th in the East, and Boston Finished 4th? They would have played each other anyway. Florida finished 3rd, so the real disadvantage here is Carolina facing the Rangers in Round 2 when they were 2nd in the Conference. It used to happen to Pittsburgh and Washington a lot a few years ago. Either way, the goal is the Cup, so what does it matter? Those teams just decided the Cup winner in the 2nd round 3 years in a row. You have to play the best eventually anyway if you want to win. Bettman has nothing to do with the Leafs losing in the playoffs lol
      Also the incentive is to get their name on the Cup. Being a champion usually increases the next contract value a bit, so it can pay off financially if they earn it. "Dangle" that extra million per year lol

    It was pretty evident that the lack of Playoff success was weighing on Keefe mentally too. All those late game "over reactions" were signs of overthinking, trying to games manship, and perhaps more importantly, lacking confidence and trust in his players. Think about how many line mates has Matthews played with, as versus say how many MacKinnon or Kucherov has played with. I am not saying Leafs need Bourdeau type of "Teddy Bear", but someone that has confidence and clear expectation that his players will do their job.

    It goes beyond Keefe and the coaching staff and even the core. The entire organization, top to bottom, needs a culture change. Toronto is quickly becoming irrelevant due to it's lack of playoff success and the NHL doesn't do well when Toronto doesn't do well. I hate Toronto (I'm from Vancouver) but even I recognize that the Leafs have the biggest market and fandom in Canada and if the fans tune the team out as it's starting to (Steve being a very good barometer of the fandom's feelings on the team) then that's not a good thing. Shanahan needs to go for sure tomorrow and then Treliving needs to be relieved or demoted soon after and the organization rebuilt. I expect the Maple Leafs to have to take a big dip next year and maybe even miss the playoffs for the first time in a long time while they fix their problems internally.
