As a blues fan Berube is a fantastic head coach and prolly what the Leafs need. He brought an intensity to our team we hadn’t seen before him and the accountability they keep referencing is probably the biggest part of that. He makes every single player give 110%

@@user-bi6rm7eg9z Ya with Kyrou, he just mispoke and it came out in a bad way but he didn't mean how it sounded from what he says. There's later interviews with Jordan Kyrou that explain the situation more. Either way, the comment above about Berubes effectiveness to bring the locker room together, still is accurate. This from another dh Blues fan. the Leafs are now in much better shape with "Cheif". I'm excited to see how he does next season. Good luck Leafs!

JT is the only one I can see doing that right now. Paul Marner will never let Mitch do that.
And you need a Core 4 that aren't all forwards. Build from the net out, with a good goalie, good d-man and two good forwards. The Pens had Fleury, Letang, Crosby and Malkin and built out from there. The Hawks didn't have a #1 goalie, but they had two top pairing d-men in Keith and Seabrook and Toews and Kane and built out from there.
You need to stop reading away players because the fans overreact. This is Kadri all over again. Everyone was wrong then and they're wrong now.

Well I always considered the Maple Leafs my Eastern Conference team to root for. St. Louis being my “hometown” team. Mostly because I enjoyed your videos to be honest. But now that you have Berube I will be actively watching any games I can get in my area.
Wish the Blues could be in the Mariner talks we could definitely use him. Sure that is wishful thinking though.

That means sacrificing likely a lot of flair and goalscoring for backchecking and hustle in all three zones. That highlight reel goal that Marner scored in the playoffs from his knees will become a thing of the past and will be replaced by greasy goals and deflections during the playoffs. All of that was said above will only happen if everyone on the Leafs roster buys into what type of game Berube wants to play and that is the million dollar question if the players including the stars will buy in or ignore Chief’s message.

@1:55 -- nahh Steve, that TOTALLY seems like a huge answer and an insight into how Berube's thinking about his time in the present but also the future as Toronto Maple Leafs head coach. Absolutely loved what he had to say, to some it might 'seem' like a very little thing, but I think it's tremendous. We need a coach who's in the moment, reacting to situations exactly as they happen, being confident in his choices, and using all the information at his disposal to make the right decision for the team. I'm already loving what I\m seeing!

Throw shade if you want, but this was the first season I watched hockey (in my 30s, previously a big baseball fan who doesn’t like the direction baseball has gone). I am a Red Sox and Cubs fan, so I naturally gravitated towards the Leafs because I love pain, I guess. When do trades happen in hockey? Any specific time in the summer, or when are trade deadlines? Again, sorry if this is more of a googleable question, but I love watching Steve’s vids, and I’m planning on being a Leaf fan for the rest of my life.
Free agency starts July 1st at noon, trade deadlines are in March of next year

Steve - loved your comments about the value of knowing how everyone's job works in an org - my theater director/teacher in high school taught me that (actors had to do at least one tech thing a season and techies had to do one walk-on part or front of house job at some point if possible). Valuable knowledge indeed.
Long time Blues fan. You are getting a great coach. We, the fan base hated his firing. The Blues failure was a product of the Team structure, not the coach. He will obviously need the tools. He will add grit and toughness to the Leafs. The Blues are far away from another cup. I wish you the best of luck and will be rooting for you on most nights!

@diggsfather A Second Rounder, a Goalie, a Depth Defenceman, and a prospect for Marner may be the deal.
Marner won’t waive unless he gets an extension and the Preds won’t commit to that much term and money without seeing him play with their team first. A Marner trade is harder than most people think

Leafs have to trade at least 2 of 4 big contracts for any type of change in playoffs

make trade, anytime but during a trade-freeze period,
signing a player ... if the player is a free agent/has no contract, anytime as well ... if they have a professional contract, need to wait until that contract ends
Player contracts run from 1st July to 30th June following year. If a player is under contract they can sign an extension to that contract only in the final year of the existing deal.
If a players contract ends on 30th June without an extension in place they become either a Unrestricted Free Agent [UFA] and can sign with any team or any league they like.
Alternatively they become a Restricted Free Agent [RFA] and the team retains their rights [provided they give a qualifying offer] - RFA status only applies to players under 27 or with less than 7 seasons played.
Trades can happen at any time for either players under contract, player rights [So RFA's or Unsigned Drafted Prospects] or draft picks. If a team makes a trade after the trade deadline the players acquired are not eligible to play in the playoffs.
I think players like Marner & Nylander are in for a reboot on how to play hockey. Nylander's version of checking means using your stick at a 6ft distance & the hardest hit Marner had was the floor when he threw his gloves. Keefe is a good coach, but he was also trying to please too many people. Berube will hopefully toughen the team up to start finishing a check

He might not put up the points like he used too but he’s consistently been one of if not the best guy in the playoffs for us. From throwing the body to digging the puck out and creating chances out of nothing. Him in the IIHF tourney rn is just another reason why he shouldn’t be going anywhere. Ppl just hate on him bc he’s getting slow, he’s still a better C than some team have on their 1st lines.

The Canucks were an awful team for a long time, mainly because the owner thought he knew best. The new GM, President, etc. convinced him to back off and let them work and within a season they topped their division. The same can happen in Toronto.
Don't worry, he's basically a lame duck president until Pelley can work out how to divide Brendan's responsibilities between himself and Brad.

Toronto can and should treat Marner like a rental. He is likely going to put the best effort (of the last few seasons anyway) into this opportunity to make a strong case for a strong upcoming contract. If he indeed is having a banner season and the Leafs are sellers at trade deadline they can get a good return OR they may be gunning for a cup run and it is worth retaining him and trying to re-sign or release next spring. Worst scenario is they eat some of his salary plus package a prospect and pick to another team to take him off their hands and receive mid round picks and over the hill plodding grinders who end up playing in another league.
I am one of the biggest haters of Mitch....Mitch is an amazingly talented player,, I would LOVE to see him stay and have Berube get that "man" inside Marner to come to the surface !!!!

So Marner can either waive his NMC so he can be moved and the team can get some cap space to add pieces they sorely need. Or he can choose not to waive it, and the front office can stick him in the press box, while still paying him, until he gives a list of teams he wants to go to. And that will do wonders for his value in free agency.
Brian Burke threatened Tomas Kaberle with this same exact thing in 2011. And it worked out for Kaberle as he got traded to the Bruins and won a cup.

WOW!! I did not know that Berube played over 1,000 games at the NHL level as a bottom 6 forward for his entire career. Not an easy task to accomplish.

If there is going to be any trades involving Marner, I feel, it could depend up how during this off season, upon him and Craig Berube. How their off season meeting goes. If Berube feels that Marner is going to follow his Coaching style then Berube could approach Brad and say, hey I talked to Marner and I feel he's a keeper or he feels that it's time to go... We'll see soon enough.

Who else do you think (if they were available at the time) would have made a "better" bench-boss rather than Craig Berube? I know it's a loaded question b/c the man hasn't done anything yet (where the Leaf's are considered) but were there others? And now that we know Keefe has been signed on as the coach for the Devils? I mean holy mackinaw! Was that not fast? Not less than 2 wks as a fired coach of the Leaf's and BOOM! He's now the head coach for New Jersey. One would think that "talks, whispers, emails etc..." were passed back and forth BEFORE his being let go from Toronto - NO?
