MORE Than Just SPEED | 2024 Mazda3 TURBO Hatchback AWD Review

  • We spent a week with the 2024 Mazda3 Turbo Hatchback. While the premium plus trim all wheel drive does approach 40K dollars, it stands alone and undercuts the cost of premium brands. The only apple to apple competitor would be the VW Golf R, but that will cost you dearly. While the 250 horsepower and 320 lb-feet of torque get all the attention, its really the transmission and AWD system working with the turbo engine that makes this car truly special. If you are on the fence between the turbo and n/a, don't fret. The NA is no slouch and has all the same premium vibe but with more normal handling and speed. On the highway, they are nearly identical in their comfort and road tripability. ‪@MazdaUSA‬

    I have the 2021 version of the Turbo AWD hatch. Having driven it for two and one-half years [42,000 mi.], this car is a great daily driver with lots of fun when you want it. Passing a mope on a country road gets that turbo kicking 80 in no time. I get 28.7 mpg in mixed driving. I live in big snow country [Buffalo/Niagara], and with winter tires the AWD is like riding on rails. The interior quality is superb. I find the seats to be very comfortable in long and short trips. Climate control is excellent. There was some criticism in Consumer Reports about the infotainment system; that is frankly ludicrous. I don't think the control knob system is complicated or glitchy; it is far more accurate and much less distracting than a touchscreen. No maintenance issues at all, to date. Only regular oil changes and seasonal tire swaps. Sure, this version is the priciest, but well worth it if you keep a car for 10 years/200,000 miles.

    This is the engine Mazda’s AWD and transmission have been waiting for. The speed is great of course but the way this handles a twisty road is its best feature. Push it really hard and fast though and its limits will come on equally as fast.

      Probably more to do with the tires. The OEM tires are definitely not performance oriented.

    We just purchased a used 23 about 4 months ago for 28k that looks just like the one you're driving. Really love it. Very smooth engine and silky shifting from a real transmission. When you put it in sport mode, that really turns it up a couple notches. A very sexy car design.

    I own a 22 Turbo Premium Plus. While this car isn't meant to be driven economically, it can be done. Keeping the RPMs below 1800-2000 for city driving ensures I get 29-30 mpg. On the highway, I can't seem to get more than 32 no matter how gently I drive. Of course, that kind of sluggish, feather-footed driving will get you a few annoyed looks and the occasional honk. It's strangely fun trying to hypermile a car that guzzles gas. I'm approaching two years of ownership and I've enjoyed every minute of this car. Even took a 7500-mile road trip in it OH - CO - UT - CA - OR - WA and back.
    Feel free to ask questions about the ownership and service experience!

      I was able to get 37 mpg average trip fuel economy on my 22 turbo hatch over a 750mi there and back trip up and down the east coast. speed limit up to 5-10 over the whole way. Left early enough to dodge any real traffic until Maryland on the way down and jersey on the way up.
      My estimated range was reading 390 miles for a week after I got back 🤣

    I have a 21 turbo hatch pp and absolutely love it, its such a great little car for daily and very fun to throw around corners in a sporty manner, but I do have to remind myself its not a sports car very important if your looking for a sports car only, ime not sure this would be the best option but if you are looking for a daily that is sporty and small this is it

    • @BeyondTheTestDrive

      Thanks! Always appreciate the kind words and support. Yea, it would be worth a drive. If you can give it a twisty road that’s where it shines. It also has that sort of EV go at any speed feel with very NA linear response. The NA has its own charms. While I would always choose the turbo to drive if they were sitting side by side, I have enjoyed getting back in and revving out the na FWD sedan. Highway travel to me is a little bit of a wash. Of course passing and highway mergers are more fun. Thanks again!

    If you put high octane you can do 0-60 in 5.5s in the best conditions. I noticed you put more editing in this one right?

    • @BeyondTheTestDrive
      @BeyondTheTestDrive  4 месяца назад +3

      Yea. With a crazy work week and weather it was nearly impossible to get everything done like I usually do. So lots of planned edits to get more rolling shots and unplanned edits to piece things together. Usually like to do the commentary shots the last day, after a week of driving, and this time is was late afternoon with hideous sun angles on the normal route. Oh well. We got it. Yea, I ran 0-60 on the first tank when I did not know the gas octane and got 6.3. My 0-60 runs are not very scientific or exact. Keep in mind I do not brake torque. The run in the video was on 93 and got the same time. I think brake torquing with a rev to 3000 will yield below 6 seconds times. The fact I got no difference indicates the first tank may have been 93. I don’t roll out or brake torque because it’s all relative anyway with other cars. It’s plenty quick with great acceleration at any speed and in any gear. Never bogs and is linear like the na. Thanks again for all your support.

    What part of the country is this in if you don't mind me asking? Roads look way better condition than where i am in the NE. They're flatter than our river valley/mountain switchbacks, but also not boringly flat and not all straight lines. Doesn't seem like theres a stop sign every mile or two either. Pretty nice driving roads.

    Hey…great review and thoughts on the turbo.
    I own a ‘20 hatch, GT, manual, (non turbo) and coming to lease end.
    Had an order in on a turbo, but, changed it to a ‘24 , non turbo, manual.
    Why?
    Well….the gas mileage, which you eluded to, is WAY WORSE, than the non turbo….
    Like, can hyper mile the non turbo to 50+mpg/highway….it has cylinder deactivation.
    The turbo….cannot get even nearly close to that….
    And….no manual available for the turbo…
    And….insurance running cost much higher for turbo…
    And….the greater purchase price…
    So….weighing those, and the common sentiment, that ‘90 % of the time’ it runs comparable to non turbo….
    For me….no brainer…no turbo.
    But, indeed, if you have money to burn, gas mileage is not a concern, and you just need that 10% increased enjoyment, by all means, get the turbo.
    Just my 2cents, from another owner. Cheers. :)

      @BeyondTheTestDrive  3 месяца назад

      Thanks for watching and for the nice comment. Great points! Nothing wrong with the non-turbo. We’re big fans of ours. Thanks for watching and for the question. It’s a fairly firm ride but fine over most roads. For folks who live where the roads are bad I advise people to make sure to test drive it over the bumps. Our daily driver is a 3 and it’s been comfortable on trips and in daily life. The seats help a lot also.

    • @BeyondTheTestDrive
      @BeyondTheTestDrive  4 месяца назад +2

      Thanks for watching. Great question. Our long term 3 sedan tester was manufactured in Mexico and it’s been fine. I don’t think there are any hard numbers on assembly defects to compare. It’s something I would not worry about. Mazda still ranks fairly high in initial quality and reliability. The CX-5 is their top seller and that is exclusively made in Japan. Overall I would guess, again no hard numbers and no horror stories I have heard of, that quality is on par or at least close to Japanese assembly. Some sedans, not many are also imported from Japan.
