Watching this video makes me so, so glad I grew up with the Master System version. The lack of screen crunch makes it so much less painful, props to you for surviving the game gear version!
The worse part is how playable the Master System version is, but Sega only re-released it once.
@@GottaBeFrank Sega makes a lot of head scratching decisions. There's no reason why the SMS versions of Sonic 1, 2, and Chaos have only been re-released once (on a now defunct Wii VC at that).
I grew up with the GG and ….it was n t SO hard. Many people exagerate .

@@GottaBeFrank And the first set of badniks in Sky High Zone are required to enter the place where the main boss is; what's the difference?
Boss music play for that section in Sky High Zone act 3 and in the Hotaru section of Metallic Madness Act 3, it's plays the level music.

I already tried it and there are a minimum of 9 required
There are actually two ways to get continues in the 8-bit Sonic 2. First of all, every Chaos Emerald you collect gives you a continue, so you will want to hunt those down (especially since you need them all to play Crystal Egg Zone and get the best ending anyway).
And, if the goal sign at the end displays Tails, you get a continue from that. To get this to occur, I believe you need to finish a level with exactly 77 rings and the exact same number of lives you started the level with.
I have actually beaten the Game Gear version 100% without any hacks or cheats long in the past, so I probably would be able to beat this game without defeating a badnik (outside of boss fights). I'd just have to memorize where all the tricky badniks to avoid are, and relearn Scrambled Egg Zone's tubes.
Then getting continues in this run isn't a guarantee. Rings may need to be used for damage boosting and emeralds could be placed in less than ideal spots.

Honestly this is 1 of my favourite sonic games, but i`ll admit green hills act 3 can be the stuff of nightmares.

You should play the creative ayra remake for android and windows.
It is sooo much better, it has better level design, no tube mazes and the best oil ocean (in my opinion) with an awesome oil surfing segment
Oil ocean has none of the boring blasters too
I'll try it at some point, but I have no interest in doing the challenge with it since it's not the exact same game.

3:50 if you pause here you can kinda see that the rings that appear when sonic gets hurt and the regular ring have different colors, i wonder why?

I played this game since I was 8 when it was released. And it is not has hard as you say. In fact, it is a good game. You dom t need save states because….ONE finding chaos emeralds give you continues….and TWO many acts have at least 2 lifes, if you get 2 and die you can increase the lifes infinitely. I used to arrive to GHZ act 3 with 30 lifes so I could try again and again. When I did, The game for me was too easy. It is NOT bad design.

A long time ago when I was in Middle School I beat Sonic 2 8-bit on my Game Gear it took many tries and then once I beat it then I had to get the good ending by collecting all the emeralds
If you can't handle unfair deaths , then you're not ready to live , because life is itself is not fair .

About the whole argument regarding beating this game legitimately: That argument is very weak. It all depends on skill level, It sounds like you just don’t have the skill level to not use level the level select, which is fine, but I guarantee you there’s someone out there who does. So technically, it _is_ possible.

@@Torthrodhel because the point of this video is him doing the challenge on the hardest version. The SMS version is much easier.
@@the757general2 Screen crunch is really artificial difficulty that the game wasn't built to include though, just a consequence of inferior hardware capabilities. You could also play it on a modern machine that would run it at 60fps and that would be a lot more difficult for being stupidly fast, but that would similarly be a daft thing to do. You could play it with a controller set up to reverse the left/right buttons to similar result. At the end of the day part of the challenge besides the difficulty is the authenticity. If it wasn't, you wouldn't bother with a Sonic game at all, and only play the most difficult game ever, whatever that might be.

Sonic Forces is filled to the brim with enemies you’re forced (pun not intended) to boost through, so probably not. 06, maybe. 3D Blast, literally impossible, you need to defeat badniks in order to simply beat the levels.

That version is too different, so it wouldn't be a fair look. Also the aspect ratio would probably make the challenge too easy.

Oh, I wasn't expecting this @Knuckles Channel 3 & Knuckles! I've played the Master System one and the remake, but I think I like ALL of them (Including the Game Gear one [I've never played that version]). I like the graphics a lot, the music is slamming and honestly, when I was playing it, I didn't cared about the difficulty (Except in that part in Aqua Lake Zone 2 and the Final Boss, that parts costed me a lot). I had lotsa of fun playing it. :)

God, this game’s a dumpster fire.
This game looks so bad. Sonic 1 doesn’t save your progress or continue either lmao. But it does have a level select code I guess. I never liked the trial and error gameplay of sonic but it seems so much worse here
