I haven't sat down to watch yet, but no, though I am aware of the android remake during my research, which also looks cool with all the new features being added. I decided to make my own version because I've always wanted to, it's the first game I played as a child and I love to draw. I'm starting university this year studying animation, and this is my passion project, and Im treating this as my rite of passage. Thank you for the kind words, I'm flattered. Hitting a creative block but hearing strangers say it actually looks good raises my spirits :) also I've never made a game before
Playing this game on an actual Game Gear is so...so much worse. The first boss is nearly impossible due to the blurry screen of the Game Gear

I had Triple Trouble before this game and while that had its moments of being difficult, the first boss made me hate this game and I never beat it. Watching this review I think I only ever made it to Green Hills.

this game is by far one of the most common game gear games, ever retro store has like 3-5 of them in stock, so like EVERY game gear owner has played it.

I feel like most of us got to the first boss in the game gear version and rage quit because of how hard it was due to the tiny ass screen and wonky physics making it near impossible to consistently dodge the cannonballs.

It is possible, it requires some technique but nothing compared to surviving 5min in Fortnite nowadays.

The concept for Scrambled Egg Zone is neat and unique, and I understand why a mostly tube based level got made. The execution is where some problems arise. It has two problems: nearly every path but the correct one punishes you, and the screen crunch that affects the entire game. I like the concept and enjoyed the zone, but was disappointed with it often being the case that only 1 correct route to avoids punishment. Tubes only send you back to make the correct choice, or choices, not back to the level beginning so you're not as lost as you might think. You just have to get to the top of the level.

Really nice video Dylan :) However as a beta tester of the Sonic 2 SMS Remake (the Remake you showcased here) I would like to add some information to it :)
- Shadow has a jump dash that
- Metal Sonic losed his ability of horizontal momentum but keeps his flight vertical ability
- New zones added such as Oil Ocean Zone (dont worry this version is awesome) and Time Hill Zone (a reimagining of Green Hills that leads to a Sky Chase level)
- Special Stages added similar to the first game but now with Beta Casino Night aspect and new gimmicks
- Multiplayer (coming soon)
And much more!

Great review and honestly I can't blame you for using cheats to beat this game. I'm surprised you didn't mention the horrible hang glider in sky high zone. Took me way too long to figure out how to use it. Have you tried Tails Adventure? Pretty good game and one of my favorite classic games.
I might check that out. Not sure yet.
@@Garrulous64 Ok. If you do decide to play it I have to warn you, its one of the more unique sonic games as it tries something completely different. I'm guessing thats why people don't talk about it much.
4:00 Along with that "knows exactly where they are" remark, it's also extremely notable that when this game was new, *online video game walkthroughs didn't exist yet* (or if they did, they weren't really a common enough thing for _me_ to know they existed anyway). If you didn't hear through the grapevine where those dang gems were from your friends, and/or spend ridiculous hours searching for yourself, *you couldn't just "look it up online."*
I did eventually look up the emerald locations online before I ever saw the good ending, but that was _years later in the late 90's,_ where you had to follow complicated text descriptions instructing you what to do because video walkthroughs that _show you_ what to do _still_ weren't a thing yet.

Late but the game gear version is actually buffed. They added slightly more enemies to levels and made boss patterns harder and more random.
At this rate we're gonna get a Sonic Advance 4 review before number 3.

I like this game and once you get the hang of it, it’s not that hard. It’s clear that the camera is the biggest enemy in the game. I mostly like it because I like the levels and music
My favorite Sonic song is The Light of Hope from Sonic Forces. Also, I like to imagine that Tails went on some adventures with Sonic before getting captured by Eggman.
QotD: This is a hard one. One of the songs I like is Believe in Myself because I find it very inspiring. I also love listening to Open Your Heart, but I got to choose Rooftop Run (the Modern version).
Favorite Sonic song: Flying Battery Zone act 2.
Note: comparisons with Sonic 1 8-bit don't mean quite as much as you may think, since that was outsourced to Ancient while this & future 8-bit Sonic games were outsourced to Aspect instead. Not the same devs.
Fun Fact: While the bubble gimmick is originally from Sonic 2 on the Game Gear, the actual sprite Mania uses is from Sonic Triple Trouble, also on Game Gear: Facing forward with legs somewhat spread, hands pressed against the front of the bubble, and looking somewhat concerned.
Can't wait for him to hit us with that Tails Adventure review lol.

I actually like the Game Gear version... Probably because I memorized it so much when I was a kid, and the payoff to get the good ending was pretty sweet. The SMS version feels like more of a prototype, too.

Sonic 2 was the Game Gear Sonic I went to first. Its infamous reputation for being one of the most difficult Sonic games led me to try my hand at it. It's a rough ride, to say the least. But even though this game has some of the worst design in the series, I still like it, and have beaten it several times.
I compare Crystal Egg Zone to World 9 from the Famicom version of Mario Lost Levels. A very strange, dreamlike world that makes you feel like you've uncovered something special. Both are unlocked by great feats, and neither is particularly difficult.
Fun fact: “Silver Mecha Metal Robo Sonic” is actually Bionic Sonic according to a tip card on fighting him

Probably either Stardust Speedway Act 2 or Metallic Madness Act 2 (both being from Mania)

In my head canon: this takes place before the genesis sonic 2 shows how tails meets sonic. and it gives tails an arc to become a hero and it concludes when helps sonic take down the death egg in the genesis version and it takes place on the island little planet appeared over in sonic cd with green hills zone being the grassy plains from the opening of sonic cd which is later roboticized in sonic chaos when Sonic and Tails try Eggman from turning the island into his new headquarters after Sonic 3 and Knuckles so he can prepare for the return of little planet in a few days.

Scrambled Egg zone is awesome and easy. Worst parts are Underground 3 boss and Aqua Lake 2 (drowning). Sky High 2 you need to keep up the momentum to hit the hidden springs
