- Montevideo is the capital and largest city of Uruguay. According to the 2011 census, the city proper has a population of 1,319,108 (about one-third of the country's total population) in an area of 201 square kilometers (78 sq mi). Montevideo is situated on the southern coast of the country, on the northeastern bank of the Río de la Plata.
The city was established in 1724 by a Spanish soldier, Bruno Mauricio de Zabala, as a strategic move amidst the Spanish-Portuguese dispute over the platine region. It was also under brief British rule in 1807, but eventually the city was retaken by Spanish criollos who defeated the British invasions of the River Plate. Montevideo is the seat of the administrative headquarters of Mercosur and ALADI, Latin America's leading trade blocs, a position that entailed comparisons to the role of Brussels in Europe.
The 2019 Mercer's report on quality of life, rated Montevideo first in Latin America, a rank the city has consistently held since 2005. As of 2010, Montevideo was the 19th largest city economy in the continent and 9th highest income earner among major cities. In 2022, it has a projected GDP of $53.9 billion, with a per capita of $30,148.
In 2018, it was classified as a beta global city ranking eighth in Latin America and 84th in the world. Montevideo hosted every match during the first FIFA World Cup, in 1930. Described as a "vibrant, eclectic place with a rich cultural life", and "a thriving tech center and entrepreneurial culture", Montevideo ranked eighth in Latin America on the 2013 MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index.
It is the hub of commerce and higher education in Uruguay as well as its chief port. The city is also the financial hub of Uruguay and the cultural anchor of a metropolitan area with a population of around 2 million.
Good memory, I came as a tourist 5 years ago: I loved this city, it is unique and its atmosphere is incredible.

Montevideo is quaint, nostalgic and melancholic. It is not for everyone. It could a bit depressing in the winter. Parts of the city are dilapidated.
But, for me, it is uniquely charming. So I do visit Montevideo once a year because it is therapeutic. The cost of living is probably the highest in all of Latin America tho. I hope to save enough to retire there some day.

The city has a nice laid back feel to it. Also, the public spaces and streets are wide and leafy- typical of 'american' cities. I'd definitely like to visit.

The city has a lot potential, too bad most buildings and public spaces are covered with Grafitis and lack maintenance.. it gives the impression vandalism is everywhere.
Exactly. Montevideo is basically a nice town but terribly run - dirty, poorly maintained sidewalks, and people have no education, ugly graffiti and tags everywhere. Well done graffiti can be attractive, adding a touch of colour, but there is a place for everything. Y aguante el Bolso! 💙🤍❤

1- Lo del agua ya se soluciono hace varios dias y se levanto la emergencia,tuvimos casi una semana de buenas lluvias
2- No vengas si no tenes estudios,es un pais bastante tranquilo comparado al resto de latinoamerica,pero muy caro

A shame for such a small country that they have cities like Havana in the 21st century. It is cultural, an interesting figure is that apparently they are doing well but its inhabitants are leaving, new immigrants are not arriving and it is among the countries with the least tourism on the continent.
A sad Uruguayan society without identity and with basic tourism and without ideas to exploit. That's what you see when you step into that little unknown country.

Montevideo, con mucho menos habitantes, es una ciudad sucia, sus edificios llenos de graffitis y la infraestructura tiene la menos 30 años de retraso. Viaja a BA y no nos hagas pasar vergüenza en el foro, con tanta soberbia injustificada. Como montevideano, me llena de tristeza y vergüenza el estado de mi capital.
