I had this model too for a number of years, and I can tell you, If you want something of a relaxed life, it's not for you! In the beginning it was fun, it was well taken care of by the previous owner, really nice, but the first time I drove it I touched the sidewalk, because it didn't have the adhesion I was used to. So, easy driving! After some time the misery began with oil leaks, motor oil and hydraulic oil. And a number of times I had to leave it at the road side because it just stopped. Once in the middle of a busy crossing. And then of course all the parts that break down, like the fuel meter. You can only keep it at high cost. The Toyota Yaris I own now (22 years old) is not an exciting car, but it is absolutely trouble free.

    Great history....Nice find....park in a barn somewhere...lol
Miss my old CX's, one saved my life with a 90mph blow out with 7 of us in the car. Steering simple turn right and light came on. Pulled to the hard shoulder to find no tyre and no wheel arch. Youd never had know apart from the noise. Awesome...brake "switch" was awesome too. Who needs brake travel!
Nice to hear an engineer call the suspension a 'cow' to fix lol 😆

My XM did the same - 70mph front tyre deflation on the M40...it just felt as if there was a bit of a side wind. Wasn't until I had to pull in at the next services that I discovered that it was steering like a pig because there was no air in the front left. Had to wait about half an hour to get the wheel bolts out because the hub was red hot.

@geoffbuyscars, saw your XM video now.
I can only agree with the above. I have an XM Y4 V6 manual, only 1102 made and mine is # 0815 - 08/15 is a German synonymon for dead common, exactly my humour!
I use her as a daily runner since 5 years and it is a perfectly functional (big boot when you need a pram), reliable and fairly economic car.
She saved our lives too already. On a dead straight, no junctions German A-road we came over a crest at 100km/h (60mph) and some utter dumbarse turned in the middle of the road! Only way to avoid him was ploughing through the ditch. With both right wheels in the ditch and wet grass at 60mph, I didn't even feel it in the steering wheel! I am convinced with every single car I had before, this would have been the end of me and my then 2y/o son!
Also what @ewenbrooke9976 says here I can only confirm. The XM does actually have a proper brake pedal, but it sits at the same height as the accelerator pedal and has extremely little travel. But so much happens in less than an inch. Remember thanks to the hydraulic system these cars don't have a brake server. And while everybody knows the XM is dead comfy, to my surprise it also is sporty. It just is unbelievable how mainly thanks to the brakes you can place this car into the apex of corners. I would nearly say it feels as nimble as the 205 GTI I had some years ago, but when you "attack" a corner, where the 205 GTI has less feel in the brakes and starts to bounce out of line, the XM is not at all impressed by pot wholes and bumps.
The suspension is a cow to fix? No, it isn't, people don't know it and that's why they are scared of it. It is true a hydraulic leak means you lose steering and brakes too. But my experience is that not only is the system simple, it has 220bars of pressure, meaning the pressure tubes are of stainless steel and extremely unlikely to go wrong. When something goes wrong, it is usually a return pipe and that can be replaced by any type of rubber hose as they don't carry any pressure whatsoever.

Hello! In case there is a potential collector and buyer out there, I am selling my Citroen XM turbo injection, automatic, 1998 cc, 1997, petrol, dark red, owned since 2011, under 82.500 miles. I have two keys and all service history. It is off the road, parked in my driveway (Greater London).
On the good side : impeccable grey velvet interior. Spheres were replaced under 1000 miles ago.
On the requirement side : The lacquer has peeled, tyres need to be replaced, and a new alternator is required.
I think that is all that is required for it to be running beautifully.
It is waiting for a collector to make it beautiful again.
    Best regards,

I do like a wafty Citroen, and I remember when these came out when I was a nipper, and just thought it looked like something from another world 😅😅
I would love one of these but think I would be terrified if something went wrong.

In America we do that same up and down with the car with air I can see why. How much has that car cost to drive kilometer per pound. Customers in America used to figure out their bill dollars per mile on the rolls-royces. At one point I could drive Mercedes cheaper than Hondas. Those days are gone.

Had the same model and spec. Best spec in my opinion. The only thing that occured occasionally was a rod to the gear stick would sometimes slip off which would mean losing the gear stick whislt driving. Locking wire saw that problem solved. Very jealous!

Really tempted by a 99 XM estate looks in near perfect shape with bags of history. Do you think one of these is a realistic daily driver nowadays?
