    If a ZPJ4 engine feels weak, it's usually caused by stuck ACAV (Admission á Characteristique Acoustique Variabele) valves. They adjust the length of the intake manifold, giving high torque at low revs and high power at high revs. There are 3 ACAV valves - 2 at the U-bend (controlled by one single solenoid, should be open at idle and closed up to 4000rpm) and one in the middle (controlled by another solenoid, should open above 5000rpm). You can test them by directly applying 12 volts to the solenoids.

      @SeasideGarage  Год назад +10

      It had an error code pointing towards that system so it is pretty likely that its stuck tbh! Pretty good information! thank you for that!

      The most common issue is defective electrovalves. It's easy to check, both of them should operate at higher RPM. Just rev the engine and look if linkage from the black capsule moves the flap. Hint: There are two elactrovalves, one green on the top of the inlet manifold and one brown at the back of right corner, between AC compressor. Both of them are unavailable, but the brown one is exactly the same part number like on 2.5TD XM MK2 EGR electrvalve, and they're are usually good. So if yours is bad, just buy used one from 2.5TD.

    It could be 5 and 6 are leaky/worn injectors, or the rest are patially blocked, especially if you think it's running a bit lean. Chuck some injector cleaner in it anyway, or take it for an Italian tune up!

    Good to hear it didn't burst into flames, always a good thing. The Sun tune machine brought back memories of working in a Mercedes/Porsche/Ferrari dealership in the late seventies. We used all kinds of wierd high tech stuff that looks like science fiction movies from the sixties now. Fascinating.

    The front suspension mountings (domes) are not that expensive considering the risk you eliminate when you renew them, someone in Lithuania sells fully refurbished ones about €180 each since about 15 years, they have passed the test of time! For the time being, avoid turning the steering, that is what gives the domes the highest strain.

    • @josephcalhoun7462
      @josephcalhoun7462 Год назад +6

      Just bought a pair of those lituanian domes from Technocitro (in France) and it only took a few hours to have them installed by a specialist. I'm now wayyyy less anxious when encountering roundabouts, speed bumps and tight turns.

    Back in the '60's I had my Volvo B16 Amazon (6v) checked over on a Crypton machine. Not much to check but we were looking at the ignition. There was a test that allowed you to see on a graph how much current was being drawn when the plugs fired under compression. Found one was low. New plugs got them all even again. Did you fit new plugs to the XM? Maybe the 2 with high numbers aren't burning very well. Yes, dribbling injectors could mean over rich and incomplete burning.
    Happy New Year!

    Don't forget to also adjust the suspension height if needed. Even if it rides smoothly, ride height might be slightly too high (rear wheel completely apparent isn't right, its top needs to be slightly hidden by the rear pannel)
    I have the problem with mine : new spheres and bushes, domes etc...smooth ride on normal roads but bad filtration of holes and gaps. Taking it on a paved road triggers anxiety.
    And I realized not too long ago that the body actually was a bit too high in the "normal" road position.
    It makes sense, since filtration was better when accelerating (aka when the rear suspension lowers itself).
    Anyway, that might help your domes a little in case your normal ride height is indeed a bit too high.

    The Hydractive ECU is not actually waking up when you were driving. That notification is just telling which suspension mode is selected when you start the car or use the mode switch. Because the XM’s info display works in sort of “priority mode” it always displays the most critical error as long as it’s there or it might cycle them I can’t remember right now. As you were driving it, it decided that all the bulbs were ok it then showed you the setting of the suspension, which it would have showed at the start if there were no other info to share. I hope this wasn't too poorly explained :D

    • @556johny556
      @556johny556 Год назад

      As someone who has had a “bulb error” recently, I can confirm that the suspension mode isn’t displayed on start up if bulb error exists, but only once the bulb is corrected.
      I think the logic behind not cycling the bulb error and suspension mode is because the suspension mode is also indicated by a light in the top left of the cluster. Which by the way, I didn’t notice functioning in this video.

    • @SeasideGarage
      @SeasideGarage  Год назад

      Makes sense! had so many errors that this was the first time seeing the suspension setting on that display... was wondering if nothing would tell you which mode the suspension was in actually... but it sounds like a got a blown bulp for the dash indicator then? :)

    • @556johny556
      @556johny556 Год назад +1

      @@SeasideGarage it’s possible. To be honest I wasn’t looking extremely closely. The bulb comes on when the ignition is turned on (just like many others) to test itself, and like I said, it’s in the very top left. So if you don’t see it come on when you turn the key, the bulb is likely out. Unless the bulb not coming on could indicate another issue.
      It also illuminates when the sport suspension is selected.

    Need to keep an ear on that diff whine, XM's should be almost silent save the engine itself audible but you are getting a "Mini whine" from the diff which could indicate trouble down the road but should be fine for the time being and just make sure oil gets changed in the box at service intervals.

    Great to see that car on the road. The 24v engine will give its best above 4000rpm. Back in 1990 my dad was looking at a car of this value but it was a company purchase. I suggested an XM as I really liked them but his company wouldn’t buy one. Instead he got a Ford Granada (Scorpio) which was a really nice car to travel in and to drive once I was old enough. I’ve aways been intrigued by XMs though. By 1998 uk dealers were almost giving away XMs. I wasn’t brave enough to buy one though!

    Strut top mounts do not just spontaneously fail.. there are clues and signs you can look for.. the main clue is in the front arches looking at the underside base plate, you can see the rubber start to split away from the base plate, so without checking them out first its a sheer guess..
    Its a multivalve engine so the 200bhp is further up the power range so demands revs to get the best.. its a 0 to 60 in 7.5 second car!

    • @556johny556
      @556johny556 Год назад

      This particular version isn’t really bad actually. It just so happens that all the plastic was in the shot. Other than the top of the dash, the very top, and very bottom of the doors, and ac controls, the rest of this interior is trimmed in leather and real wood.
      I will say though that any XM other than the 24 valve V6 has bit more plastic inside. Notably on the center console and the steering wheel.
