The interview with Peyton after this game was epic. He said his dad taught him that play, and the key to running well it was to not even tell his teammates what he was doing. That way they would commit to blocking for the running back, and their facial expressions wouldn't give the trickery away. He did that once before in Indy vs the Jaguars and once for the Broncos in a game at Dallas.
Was listening to he Pat McAfee Show this morning and he spoke on this play and how it came to be. The story starts at about 16:34 into the vid ruclips.net/video/KdLz36TqXwM/видео.html
@kush God It had nothing to do with class. It was football IQ and understanding the situation with the scoreboard and the clock. A first down in this case was better than a touchdown. Peyton just didn't want the Raiders to get the ball back and have even the slightest chance at a comeback. He had the lead, and he wanted to run out the clock. Don't think for a second that Peyton has ever been one to show mercy to an opponent.
The announcers weren't too bright back then. The clip is missing the context. This play was run with 1:39 on the clock in the 4th quarter. The Raiders had no timeouts left. Peyton actually should had slid much sooner. But he had so much grass in front of him I guess he couldn't help it. The raiders had sold out to stop the run on 3rd and 2.
I remember watching this live and I was getting so hype on the couch because Peyton never ran the ball so to see him get a big run like that was nuts lol
I was literally at this game with my dad and cousin, so I still vividly remember Peyton’s run even 11+ years later. I was pretty mad that day since the Raiders had just been eliminated from playoff contention before the game started since the Chiefs won their game, so the Peyton run was salt in the wound. Nowadays, I can look back at this and laugh as I’m pretty happy I got to witness this live.
Remember this game and watching it live. And, watching this video I remember I was berating Dan Fouts for being SUCH an idiot here. Peyton went down on purpose NOT because he thought he was gonna get caught as Fouts so enthusiastically and repeatedly mentioned. He went down because it was a 3rd or 4th and short with less than 2 minutes on the clock, and, the Raiders, having just burned their final timeouts, needed a stop. The Colts needed only a first down to be able to simply kneel away the rest of the clock and end the game. Damn linemen, Fouts.
I'm only thumbing down on this because he cost me some cash when we did this. But! My son laughed his ass off when I told him about this play. Can't wait to show him thanks!
Peyton intentionally Slid down so the Colts could run the clock and when they did score and kicked it off, the Raiders would than have a minute left in the game to score and in those days there wasnt too many 2 minute offenses being utilized as it is today....
That’s not accurate at all. He slid down because there was less than two minutes and the raiders had no timeouts. He took two knees after this and the game was over.
On the Pat McAfee Show, Pat goes over this play and how it came to happen. The story starts at about 16:34 into the vid ruclips.net/video/KdLz36TqXwM/видео.html
Because that was the better strategic decision to win the game. What you don't see in this highlight clip are the score and the clock. The Colts were already ahead 31-26, but scoring a touchdown would give the Raiders the ball back with about 1:30 left. Sure, it would have been a longshot for the Raiders to score 12 points in that span of time (if Manning had scored and Vinatieri had gotten the PAT, the score would have been 38-26), but when Peyton slid for the first down, it was the final nail in the coffin.
FIFA Player he slid because there was about a minute left in the game and if he scored the other team would’ve had the ball and he didn’t want them to score
Because of the game situation. What you don't see is that the Colts are winning and there's about a minute left in the 4th quarter and the Raiders have no timeouts. Sliding for the first down guarantees the win for the Colts, who will then kneel it out. If he had scored with that, the Raiders MIGHT have been able to come back. I mean, it would have been a 12 point deficit with barely any time on the clock, but it's possible. Take the W, don't need to pad stats.
Announcer is so wrong, he didnt go down because of the tackle, he went down to keep the clock running. Raiders had no timeouts left, 3 straight kneels and this game is over after this 1st down bootleg. Dumb announcer
Biased ass commentary ... Standing at 6'5, If he'd taken one more stride, dove forward, and extended the ball, he would have easily broken the goalline ... he made a minor mistake at the end of one hell of a play, plain and simple, no way 78 was catching him from behind ... I bet he wishes he had a do over on this one ...
He went down to burn the clock because the Raiders had no TOs and the game was almost over. Scoring would give the Raiders a legitimate chance to drive down the field and win from behind. This was the smart play.
His blockers were blocking for the called run play. This was supposed to be a handoff, Manning just did his own thing without telling anyone because one of the Raiders D-linemen used to be a Colt, recognized the call, and told the rest of the defense where it was going, so they all prepared for the called play. Manning just never handed off the ball and ran for it.

He must have at least told Rhodes to keep running as if he had the ball

Right. He could've easily ran the ball into the end zone.
All he needed was the 1st down.
A couple kneel downs and the game is over
Overanalysis by the commentator. Peyton was just running the clock out

That's not Dan Fouts, that's Dan Dierdorf.
Great story, except its not Dan Fouts. moron.
I had never seen this clip before. The commentary smelt of bullshit. Running out the clock after getting a first down made much more sense.

Yep. Anybody else would have went for the TD to pad the stats, but Peyton only cares about winning and clock management.

Peyton Manning = alegria nas pernas
Dude trying to explain why he went down for 1 whole minute lol. He went down so he could throw a TD pass instead.
Manning forever
I would’ve given anything to see peyton run it in with colts number 30 lighting up that raiders defender for the final block
Fun fact: Peyton Manning and Patrick Mahomes have the same 40yd dash time
Peyton looking like Edgerrin James
I remember being at the stadium in the shit seats and literally not believing the announcement lol

Lol awesome
If that was Cam sliding at the three yard line instead of running it in? BOY O BOY O BOY
The only Thumbs Down given to this video is probably from someone who lost a bet due to this play.
peyton could have easily got the touchdown lol, he had him beat.. don't agree with the announcer
AND he knows how to carry the ball too. A shit ton of QBs will carry it like it's nothing and easily fumble, especially the guys who never run
I think he would have made it I without being touched
Is this that one game in Oakland, where Manning beat the Raiders by himself?
Yup. This was in Week 16, 2010. In Oakland
Wth is this announcer talking about? Him getting caught from behind? He slid so they could kill the clock
are you doing in on touchdown
This is the smartest football play ever. These young mobile quarterbacks need to take lesson. Rg3 take lesson
RG3 is a name I haven't heard in a long time.
Peyton would have scored, but he went down to ice the game. He said so himself. He wasn't getting caught by anyone.
Ah please he def would have scored.. and 99% chance been fine lol.. One Time for the Great PM tho 💪💯

Yeah he could've, but why as a quarterback risk an injury
