The 5 speed auto gear box blew up on my standard 2008 FG XR6 at 60,000km about 10 years ago. Warranty had just run out as well. Had to search for a reconditioned one off a wreck which cost me around 3k to fix. Yep two handles snapped off in my hand and driver side back window hasn’t worked for years. You forgot to mention the actual ceiling lining falling off on your head while driving and having to use thump tacks or staples to prevent it happing again. Had to replace the bushes on it a few times over the years as well. The internal dash lights have a mind of their own and flicker occasionally just to annoy you. The audio speakers have a annoying hum when listening to the radio but not when your listening to a CD? The thermometer has never worked correctly. iIt tells you it’s 1 degree out side when it’s actually 25 degrees!! Apart from that it’s still looks good and I still own it and use it as a daily drive.Just clocked up 170,000km. I haven’t seen anything out there yet to warrant getting rid of it...

Now yours is an opinion I can appreciate. I'm looking at upgrading to an FGII or a G6 in the near future. Maybe a G6 turbo if funds allow.
If this is the worst this guy can come up with then I'm moving ahead with that purchase.
I'm 42 & have long acknowledged that cars wear out, no matter what brand it is.
Preventative maintenance is a big part of having a reliable ford, & knowing generic faults helps too.
I had an XF for 10yrs, & an AUII now for 9yrs, I think I'm well trained to take on an FG !!
PS: 2 fords in 19 years, both with factory trans coolers & not 1 milkshake event. New radiator every 5 or so years is key.

The milkshake issue was more of a problem with the BF Mk II models that had the ZF6HP26 in them. The heat exchanger was very poor quality and would fail quite early. For the FG Ford replaced the heat exchanger with a more reliable unit (because they were sick of replacing transmissions under warranty) - but the reputation was already set. Still worth replacing with an external cooling unit though as eventually it'll fail, particularly if the cars not had good cooling system maintenance.

  • @vonbon954

If the FG cupholder is at least similar to the BA cup holder, and it appears to be, then you have missed a couple of high tech features of your vehicle that could keep you and your car dry.
1 - the plastic insert is designed to be lifed out and turned around, which puts the nice tall support at the front of your drink. So yeah 1.1g braking is no issue for your Coke can.
2 - the insert can be removed to accommodate cups of different widths, which provides a secure hold on your drink. So if you can pill 1.0 g in a lateral you will be nice and dry
So approaching 300,000km on an XR6-T, and I can assure you that exceedingly large travel mugs and drink cans and all manner of containers can be secured easily and quickly by using the Ford AU cup holder the way it was designed to be used.
    Upsides of the design:
    - there are no moving parts, and the thing is made of rubber, so there is nothing to break or to wear
    - a practised hand can reconfigure the cup holder in about 200 milliseconds, really. The bits you are not using go into the center console.

removing the cup holder insert stops my drinks from spilling but i don't drink that gurana shit. after 5 yrs the only failure i have had is the window switch but in fnq as a non smoker i don't wind the windows down which also helps to keep the dust out. every man and his dog knows not to buy the 5 speed auto and im still skeptical about milkshake since it seems to be a maintenance issue, the radiator coolant has to be a certain type which helps inhibit aluminum corrosion.

I took it to Power Ford, and despite the manager almost choking, he said they said they couldnt detect any gas leak whatsoever and nothing was wrong with it! I played around with the plugs and found number 3 wasnt always working. I tried to replace the plugs, but they were absolutely corroded in. The local mechanics werent game to remove the plugs. Then I took it to Cumberland Ford, and after disassembling the entire gas and induction system, they said they coudnt find anything. However, they seemed to fix it. Interestingly, they said they had no problem removing the plugs. I guess they have a very long lever. I can't remember if I have noticed a gas leak since. Then, a year later, the engine started missing again after it warmed up, but not always. I took it to Gazman at Seven Hills, and they did what every capable auto place does and they plugged it in and found number 1 spark problem. They found water had got past the plug seal and corroded the plug. It has gone fine ever since, except it uses more gas than my other EcoLPi.

I would go to a injected liquid gas specialist expert or even a good Ford dealer although dearer in a lot of cases, they have the right scann tools with any gas problems because they have the training and specifics of the system but you will need a good dealer, we use Byrne Ford in Brisbane who have been ok and we service every 6-8mths you just get them to do basics service's warranty stuff and gas systemschecks for more general out of warranty stuff suspension, brakes, I probably wouldn't bother with a dealer. But get your plugs and coils checked regularly, because you do need good spark in any LPG system ,it has higher octane which requires more spark to burn

Have a 2010 G6 (bought new) & the only gripe I have is the water leak through the boot's wiring loom. Water gets in if the car is parked facing downhill (during rain/car wash), water pools up at the base of the rear windscreen leaks through the rubber conduit seal & runs along the boot floor straight into the cabin behind the rear seat. I've had some really bad leaks over the years with drenched rear bench & rear foot wells - I only recently found the location of the water leak.
