It was a relatively small cruise liner for its time being built in the 1970’s, being sold to Society Expeditions Cruise Inc in the 1990’s, it was built to do small expeditions. The World Discover was sailing in the Solomon Islands in a pretty uncharted reef when it hit a rock, tearing a hole in the hull. I would love to know what Solomon Islanders think of the book/films, The Thin Red Line. I watched the 1998 film in theaters as a teenager and it introduced me to the Melanesian culture. I know that the geography isn't accurate in the book but the author Jim Jones did serve on the island during World War II. Very curious to hear how the past is taught today. Great episode everyone. I have been to Vanuatu, New Caledonia and Fiji but really want to see the Solomons.
the snake and mountain story reminds me of The Hobbit. The men inside the mountain are the dwarves, the snake and the gold in the mountain is the dragon Smaug occupying the former dwarven mountain-city of Erebor with all his riches of gold and gems. And the diamond on his head is the Arkenstone.
When Keith said, "Buy my shirt, not Hannah's", it was the first time he showed any dislike of her in these videos. I always felt the Hannah-Keith "rivalry" was one-sided; Hannah would call Keith disgusting, then Keith would show up, burping or hog-calling.
In the Fan Friday episodes Keith has responded to the rivalry a couple of times. I think the rivalry started because Keith likes the Gators and Hannah likes the Crimson Tide.
I was fortunate to live and work in The Solomons way back in the 80's in the Western Province. Watching this video makes me quite emotional as a more beautiful and unique place, people and experience is hard to imagine. If I were to choose one experience (adventure a better description) that shaped my life and am thankful for, it would be The Solomons.
Let me share a story of mine from Solomon Islands. I was traveling from Honiara to Auki by ferry. It was one of the smaller & faster catamaran boats. Anyway, about 20 minutes into the journey I saw a fish jump up from the water and fly just as fast as the boat. It flew around 30cm above the water for over 30 to 60 meters at a 45 degree angle away from the boat. I was by myself and had never seen something like that in my life. I even had doubts if it was real. I thought I was hallucinating due to the heat. In fact, I was so shy, I stopped myself from asking any of the locals on the boat if they had seen one before. I was worried that they would think I was crazy. It didn't take long however to see more and more of these flying fish and I was confident that I wasn't the only one who could see them.
My great great uncle, Robert Adams Downing was shipwreck in the Solomon Islands during World War II. His ship was called the USS Helena, and it was torpedoed three times by the Japanese. He was helped out by friendly natives and was sent home a year later in 1945. Thank you to the Solomon Islander people for saving and taking care of him. Love from the United States.🇺🇸🇸🇧
Not bad! From a (Malaitan) Solomon Islander in Tokyo: well done on getting a wantok to co-present :). Gud wan Terry bro! BTW...I love those little tapa maps for gifts: I've given away heaps to international friends lol.
A Melanesian here and a half asian! it's been like 5 years since I'm away from my home country and I missed it so much two more years and I can finally visit again can't wait.
Guadalcanal island (and most of the Solomon islands) was explored by a Spaniard called Pedro Ortega Valencia, who was from a town near Seville called "Guadalcanal" (where my father was from) counting 3000 inhabitants today. It's incredible that such an island was so important during the II WW. So I visited the island in 2012 and fell in love with the desertic beaches and their ship wracks 10 meters off the coast! in 2013, I got to invite some ministers of the country to visit Guadalcanal in Spain. It was a fabolous week.
Hi Paul ! Thank you so much for this cool and instructive episode ! It’s cool that you brought Terry, a guy from the Solomon Islands. It’s a shame that this part of the world isn’t talked about more in western media, so once again, thank you. My own family is partly Native Hawaiian (I'm mixed race) but there is some difference between Polynesian and Melanesian cultures and I love that educational videos like this exist!
What a wonderful video. As a solomon islander, I am really proud to watch that. My most interesting part was in sport. Solomon is well known for futsal and beach soccer. Now there soccer ranking are well improving with some big sport name in the region such as micah lealafa and raphael leai. Hope solomon will qualify for the World Cup very soon.
One of my favourite episodes! Just two things: - The map of West Papua at the end only shows one of the two Indonesian provinces that make up the West Papua region (the western part of the island of New Guinea). The situation there is quite confusing anyway... - The Fijian language (or any other language spoken in Fiji) is not mutually intelligible with Melanesian Creole (which is a cover term for the mostly mutually intelligible national languages of PNG, the Sollies and Vanuatu - Tok Pisin, Solomon Pijin and Bislama, respectively). (Another creole language - Kriol, spoken in Australia - could also perhaps be included in that bunch.)
Solomon Islanders, if you read this, thank you for being the ones who saved our 35th president. Without you the history of the whole world would be different. Your Biuku Gaza and Eroni Kumana initiated the rescue. A small nation, your step into history nevertheless changed history. So the geography we all share bids us to ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for the world.
Awesome episode! I've been to Solomon Islands before and stayed on an island with a small community and it was really nice. Best food I was served was ferns 😮 They tasted so good! Also the most popular beer is Sol Brew- would recommend.
Greetings from Solomon islands.🇸🇧
Love this
My grandfather was stationed during WW II and said it was the most beautiful place he ever saw .
Terry is amazing! Big love for him! :) We want him in the future episodes!
You missed your opportunity to talk about Tikopia Island in Temotu Province, an island observed for its sustainability
Gud wan Terry bro!

greetings from PNG 🇵🇬
Guadalcanal island (and most of the Solomon islands) was explored by a Spaniard called Pedro Ortega Valencia, who was from a town near Seville called "Guadalcanal" (where my father was from) counting 3000 inhabitants today. It's incredible that such an island was so important during the II WW. So I visited the island in 2012 and fell in love with the desertic beaches and their ship wracks 10 meters off the coast! in 2013, I got to invite some ministers of the country to visit Guadalcanal in Spain. It was a fabolous week.
2 year life in Rennell Island.. great moment!
21:43 try to say "rural juror" as it's said in the tv show "30Rock"

I almost choked on a tater-tot while watching the animated pregnant woman shoot out the twins 😂🤣😂🤣
Hi Paul ! Thank you so much for this cool and instructive episode ! It’s cool that you brought Terry, a guy from the Solomon Islands. It’s a shame that this part of the world isn’t talked about more in western media, so once again, thank you. You said that the Solomon Islands were part of the South Pacific Commission, but it is now called the Pacific Community (SPC or CPS in French). I’m really looking forward for the Vanuatu episode. Good job 👍🏽
Greetings from palau 🇵🇼🇵🇼🇵🇼🇵🇼🇵🇼🇵🇼

I have a friend from the Solomon Islands in Law School. We started a study group together. I love this video, it's helped me to learn more about where she's from. My own family is partly Native Hawaiian (I'm mixed race) but there is some difference between Polynesian and Melanesian cultures and I love that educational videos like this exist!
This was perfect.
Dark people with blue eyes and blond hair?! So lovely looking.
Thank you Geography now. We learned a lot
It must be pretty rare to meet a person from Solomon Islands unless you live on the West Coast.
One of my favourite episodes!
Just two things:
- The map of West Papua at the end only shows one of the two Indonesian provinces that make up the West Papua region (the western part of the island of New Guinea).
I hope once he finishes he goes back and re-records some of the first videos. The A's and B's really deserve longer episodes!
Awesome work on that animation of Terry’s snake on the mountain story!
Betel nut is a stimulant drug btw 😄 it looks like people are spitting blood everywhere but the red colour is from a reaction with I think the lime juice mixed with the nut.
@@Rainstorm121 Thanks! Cool to hear about the new solbrew 😊 I was on Kolombangara
I enjoy hearing about these smaller, lesser known countries
I enjoyed learning so much about the Solomon islands. Before this I only knew about the WW2 stuff.
After 4 years of watching the show,
Finally my country 🇸🇴
