the problem is in the fuel pump... timing solanoid is broken, or the transistor that is stearing the solanoid. cut the cables from the timing soląnoid and check how many OHM's u have there. about 10 OHMS is ok. less like 1-3 means that soląnoid is broken

I know this is a very old post, but that is identical to my 2018 transit connect, 1.5 tdci ecoblue same metallic rattle, it was driving me insane, initially would rattle under load, between 1800-2000 rpm,
I had 3 injectors replaced, but the rattle returned after approximately 70 miles of driving, I used to also experience stuttering while cruising at 70mph.
Local garage investigated using the FORD FDRS tool, and found the injectors were not balanced efficiently, and engine was spraying too much diesel into injector.
I noticed my MPG reduced greatly, and was mis diagnosed at 3 other garages, with over £2k spent on parts that wasn’t required.
I replaced 3 brand new Bosch Injectors, probably not required, Cambelt and water pump, last replaced 15,000 miles ago.
Fuel Filter, MAF air flow sensor.
PCM was reset, EGR reset, High pressure fuel pump reset, Injectors reset and recoded.
Rattle has gone, I want to post my own video about this one day, as it’s a huge problem, us having our vans mis diagnosed, it’s expensive and takes up a lot of time, I had no codes or errors, take it to a garage that has the Ford dealership software, they can see how each injector is performing, and reset to the correct manufacturer tolerance.
    Hope this helps, someone.

it's the timing solenoid on diesel pump search that on youtube

In my case resetting the fuel pressure pump would stop the injector knocking for 100 miles, but knocking then returns, going into Fords for new PCM on Wednesday, £1300
🙏 lets hope this finally fixes it.

Sounds like a misfire from a faulty injector, put a screwdriver tip on the metal part of each injector and your ear on the end of the handle, if one of them is not ticking, the solenoid has blown, also check videos on how to do a leak off test.

Yeah was the same that happened to me today driving back home at first I thought of the engine mounts had gone the way the engine was rocking back and forth glad it was something simple and not like a cracked piston or cam carrier thank god

That's not tappets, it's not going with the revs.
That's diesel knock, either suction control valve or injectors
When you said you work for a mechanic company, it's no good if you're in the office, is it.
