DIY Samsung Refrigerator Drain Fix

  • My 3 year old Samsung Refrigerator was leaking water into the bottom of the fridge and the deli drawer. After doing some digging, the problem was a very small heatsink that is supposed to prevent ice from freezing on the drain below the condenser. I figured I would swap it out with a bigger one and video the steps for others to follow.

    Thanks for this great video. It is just the right length and has just the right amount of information to get the job done.!!.....When I got the panel off and looked at my condenser pan it was full of water and had some ice around the edges BUT the drain line did not look frozen and that was not my problem. The line seemed clogged, which it was...I took a piece of insulated wire and pushed it down through the drain hole. My clog was at the bottom of the drain line...about 3 1/2 feet of wire....once the clog broke free the water flowed freely out of the condenser pan. I poured some vinegar into the line to possible help keep it clean. I ,of course, then installed the new freeze/heat part you installed. I could not have fixed my problem without iyour video!! Thanks!

    Secret weapon at the end of my comment - I thawed the area behind the back panel with a hand held steamer. Sprayed steam down the drain for a long time. Still drained slowly. You know what worked instantly after the ice was gone? I poured a small amount of Clorox Washing Machine Cleaner in the drain and whoosh! Instant clear out! It must have been a combination of mold inside the drain, followed by a full drain line that froze.

    There is also an upgrade to this fix, Samsung recommends to add a heater line to the defroster.. However, that drain can also be clogged from a bug, or spider climbing up through the bottom, a blower and air compressor is needed to blow the drain out, and flush it with hot water.. until water flows very well.. 👍

    Take the lower rear panel off the frig , remove the (2) 6" pan drain hoses and clean them out.... that is the reason water backs up and freezes... 3' of wire down from the inside may not break the clog free. its 4 screws to remove the lower panel and the hoses are right in front of you. They just pull off an push back on

      @@scoobtoober2975 I believe they have upgraded tubes available that come in a kit with the heat sink in this video which is why I was lead here, I'm searching for the kit. The drain tubes have the duckbill on top of them to keep warm air from entering the fridge/freezer as well as keep the creepy crawlers out.
      I spent the last few week chasing down why both the flex drawer and freezer were not getting cold and found a video on how to add R134a to the system for about $40 in parts, already had the R134a, and as of today am back in business, have 0 degrees again in the freezer! Just wanted to add that if you or anyone else is having issues like that and the system is not reporting any errors.

    I just did mine. Second time I had to clear it out and totally defrost the fridge. Funny thing is, the pre installed clip was all mangled and bent up and clearly supposed to dip into the drain, but it wasn't. Either way, I got these clips and installed. My drain shoots to the left after a half inch or so, so I had to kind of twist and bend it to get it to go fully down. Hopefully that's it.

    • @RoughRidersTV
      @RoughRidersTV  Год назад +1

      The thing I would check next is the drain tube and make sure it's not clogged. The heatsink tips goes into that drain tube. Samsung uses a soft, gummy rubber tube that can attract dust and gunk and clog up that tube. The other thing to look at is airflow. Poor airflow can lead to ice build up and then when the ice melts, it drips down into various compartments. If air is not circulating properly, it can make it worse. I would expect your fridge to be warmer than it should be if the fan had failed but it's something to check either way.

    I am getting ready to try this repair. When you said to use an insulated wire to help unclog the drain, if necessary, what kind of wire are you referring to?

    • @RoughRidersTV
      @RoughRidersTV  11 месяцев назад +1

      Sorry, I don't recall ever saying to use an insulated wire to clear the drain. If the drain is clogged due to ice, I would try to melt it. Mine was not currently clogged so I didn't have to do that step. If it is clogged due to debris, gunk or other stuff, a solid wire might help clear it. If is a rubber tube so you might be able to pull it out from the back side of the fridge to clean it out.

    Did you have water around the leveling knobs?

    • @RoughRidersTV
      @RoughRidersTV  Год назад

      No, I was getting it in the middle deli drawer below the main refrigerator compartment. If you are getting it around the leveling feet, I would look at the drain tube further down. There should be a tube that drains into a pan in the bottom of the fridge where it should evaporate. When that gets clogged, water can go into the freezer bottom and freeze/melt and drip out under the fridge. Might want to see if that is happening on your unit.

    • @RoughRidersTV
      @RoughRidersTV  2 года назад

      @@marksinger4415 NP. It's not a lot of water that should drain out of the evap coils. It works similar to your home AC. There is a drip pan that catches the moisture that builds up. The problem that can occur is that the drain hole ices over and plugs up so now the water has no place to go but into the deli drawer. Putting the larger heatsink on there helps prevent the ice build up that blocks the drain.

      This is not intended as a fix if the coils are freezing over. This is just a fix if the drain hole is freezing causing water to drip into deli drawer. The larger heatsink should help prevent the drain from freezing over.

      @@RoughRidersTV so I do lots of samsung freezing up issues. From the icemaker housing to the fresh food section. I just recently started making videos on Samsung issues. None of those “fixes” will do anything. First the drain in the fresh food section isn’t designed to restrict air migration into the unit. I’ll be doing a complete breakdown of the air gaps. The icemaker/ice room has major air gaps. Their drains are garbage. I have used LGs drain tubes , they must be slightly modified. I’m currently using a different design from another manufacturer. Samsung has 1 issue- gaps. What goes through the gaps? Air.
