Great vid. Our Samsung was building ice over an inch thick in two places. I found your vid a couple years ago and made a deal with my wife-hold off buying a new refrigerator until I can try one last time to fix it. And after a couple of days, the two T pieces of metal were installed and two years plus later the fridge is running like a champ. Even my ice maker repaired itself. This is a five dollar fix that took me two days to do. Samsung should have fixed this long ago, but they sell more units when they break after three years. Thanks so much. I feel like I found $3000 on the ground!!! Free money. And no ice build up!!
@@trbowlin Saved me a ton. Wife was really droolin over some fridge that cost $5k. That was 2.5 years ago. Hilarious that this thing is still running on a tiny piece of extra metal. Funnier that I actually fixed it, not being that kind of guy usually. But when I get my dander up...well...I tell ya...lol. RUclips. Took me days to actually find your vid. Glad I did.
Thank you! Even though we had a different model this was what we needed. My husband and I appreciated that you get down to business in your videos without trying to be a comedian!
Mr. Bowlin, my hat is off to you! I have the exact same model of refrigerator -- the Samsung RF18 -- with the exact same problem. I followed your instructions, and bought the spare part from Amazon for $6. But when I installed the piece, I reversed it so that it hung opposite of how you installed it, with the tabs wrapping around the defroster bar from back to front, instead of from front to back. (I had seen it installed that way in another video). Using needle-nose pliers, I found it pretty simple to get the long outer tabs and the central piece wrapped around and cinched down on that defroster bar securely and completely. But I would have been totally lost on how to fix this stupid design flaw without your expert and easy-to-follow guidance. Thank you!
This was so helpful! Fridge came with the house when we bought it. It’s been three years of not using the crisper drawers because they ruin my food. Made me hate freezer drawers. Who knew it was going to be such an easy fix! Between this video and the one from Jeff Lepard, I was able to fix the problem! You saved me so much money…Thanks!
Oh my gosh!!! Thank you SO SO MUCH! We’re renting in a very expensive area of the country…not going to call a service person…but this has driven me CRAZY. I may have to wait for cooler weather, but I’ve ordered the part! (To shut off the fridge!)
This was sooooo helpful!!! Thank you!! We have been dealing with this issue for months and all it took was a little googling on my part to show my hubby what to do!!! Thank you!!!!
Yes this fix did work for about 3 years and the fridge started leaking water again into the crisper, so off with the back panel ect for an inspection. I found that the replacement T piece of metal I had replaced had become all twisted from the ice buildup thus making it shorter in length and the tube again blocked with frozen water, so I uninstalled and straighten the best I could as the metal had become very soft and loss its strength. I will reinstall and hope it lasts another 3 years.
Your video gave me the courage to take the evaporator cover off to investigate. Everything was SO frozen that all the styrofoam on the cover came off in pieces and it appeared that there was no 3rd screw in removing the cover because it was covered with ice. The part you gave a number for was there - never attached if you can believe it! - so I attached it and have ordered a new evaporator cover. Thanks again considering I can’t even find a repairman. I’m grateful!
Instead of waiting on the part to get delivered, I used a bare piece of solid copper wire and wrapped it around the defrost-bar and sent the other end down the drain. Good video!
Thanks for the video - I have the exact same problem. But instead of replacing with a longer $9 clip which I bought from Amazon, I bought 14 gauge 5 ft. half round copper wire to wrap around the heat coil and conduct the heat all the way down the drain pipe (it's about 4.5 ft long). I learned this from another RUclips video. It's only a few days and I haven't found the water accumulating again. Will report back if it doesn't work.
This is a great video, I used an endoscope to check for ice in the drain line. The first few inches looked clear. I tried using hot water and a turkey baster, after working on it for some time, I ended up spraying a little lock deicer in the drain tube. I then reinserted the endoscope, voila all the ice was gone. to get to the bottom of the tube it was about 18 inches.
Your video got me going in the right direction but for me it was not this issue causing the problem, it was actually a lot easier. When I took the fridge apart there was standing water in the drain collector area but it was not frozen. Long story short I ended up taking the bottom back cover off and there are 2 Grey tubes on the right side (looking from the back of the fridge) that are drain tubes . When I removed the left tube it was clogged with some weird almost silicon substance. Unclogged it and water immediately ran out, about 1/4 cup and that was it. No problems since.
This video was super helpful. Great video and helpful. Had seen a few others and none gave the rationale for making sure the ends of the piece were wrapped around the defrost tube. Hoping our problem is now solved! Thank you for this video.
@@trbowlin Have you had to change the part again over the past year as I see the video is a year old. We are renting so I am leaving this fix to our landlord. But now I know what’s up.
Thank you for an excellent and helpful video. I had the same issue and solved it using your help. It has been 3-weeks and knocking on wood still fixed.
I just ordered my part. I really appreciate you taking the time to post this. I was completely frustrated and baffled. Now it makes perfect sense. I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks again....Terri :)
Hi TR: I followed your instructions and they were perfect. The part I ordered was bigger than the part on my fridge AND, the part on the fridge had a metal snap instead of bendable metal to secure it on the bar. (I didn't know this until I opened it up.) I just twisted the old piece until it snapped off and installed the new part. I figure bigger is better! I am concerned, however, that the original part looked either a bit corroded or sheared. If a piece sheared off, it is down in the hole and could clog it up. Regardless, I took the time to wash it out and am waiting for it to finish cooling before I put my food back in. I live in the north and it is 23 degrees outside so a great time to work on this project. My food is in plastic storage bins in the garage staying nice and cool! As of today (12/29/20), assume everything worked fine unless you hear from me. Thanks again and Happy New Year....Terri
@@terrimontemalo1367 Yes, the new part is longer, and snapping the old one off is exactly what you have to do. I'm in Idaho and it's 11 outside right now....brrrr So glad to hear back from you. Take care! Oh and I wouldn't worry about it shearing off and the corrosion is common too.
An update...the problem returned. Everything was fine, but I left for 17 days over Christmas and I noticed the water in and under the crisper drawer about a week after I returned. Not sure if it was just that the fridge had not been opened for so long caused the problem but there was lots of frost buildup in the freezer drawer. I opened the back up again and found the defroster drain totally frozen up. I have not found a solution to this problem so if you know of one drop a comment. I simply defrosted the drain again and 2 months later the problem has not returned.
Going to do the same repair, but I'm also going to hang a loop of 14 gage copper wire with a tail all the way down the drain. Just to make sure it never happens again.
This guy also changed the sensor and seemed to have success. I’m doing both repairs today. Following for future information. ruclips.net/video/ZiK9JS-2o-Q/видео.html
I can't even get mine to drain. I melted all of the ice on top with a hairdryer and then I poured boiling hot water down the hole, but it just sits. Any ideas?
Mine took about a year to freeze again after installation of the longer clip into the drain. I’ll check to make sure that it is touching the defroster bar as much as possible this weekend. Thanks for the video. Although I’d seen others which allowed me to make the repair and install the clip, no one had mentioned the need for good contact with the defroster bar. My tabs on the clip may not be making good enough contact.
Please check your drain pipe in the back, Mine had same issue not solved after replacing the clip then I found out the drain pipe had dirt and its blocked, After I cleaned it up its good . Please check your drain pipe
appreciate this video , . Just thinking, which has gotten me in trouble B4. would a small access cover just above the small drain line be cut out to allow occasional heater gun blast to eliminate freeze build up. Definitely make a small resealable cover plate to protect. ????? THANKS A MILLION
also how do you clean the water tray at the back of the fridge to make sure the hose is in good shape in clear at the back on the fridge ? and to check the freezer drain is working as well ? maintaince help- it sounds like theses kind of fridges all have the same issues we have 69 complex in our site and many ppl have had the same issue around year 2!
Will the fix work for Samsung refrigerator model RF20HFENBSR? Asking as the defrosting heating element seems to come down much closer to the draining hole in my refrigerator. Thanks!
There are two little weld spots on the old clip, carefully, with needle nose pliers or the like, grab the side of the clip closest to you and pull on the metal. The welds break easily. Just be careful when you are breaking the welds on the old clip. Let me know if you need anything else! Thanks for watching.
@@trbowlin Thank you......waiting for the new clip to arrive.....a bit nervous about this but your directions are nice and clear. I saw that one poster said to use a turkey baster to remove the water that melts from the ice dam. Is that necessary? I got the impression from yours that once it melts it just flows away.
Spent 20 minutes trying to find the drain hole in my Samsung fridge. Found your video, and figured that was all I needed. I took off the panel to find the hole frozen up solid. How do I prevent that from happening again? Came back to your video and found the answer.
@@trbowlin The trouble I had was that the panel was frozen solid to the fridge, and I had to let it thaw for a good 24 hours. Of course, nothing can be easy! But thank you for the video. Working on four days now, and no water in the bottom.
Thank you so much! I’m a 68 yr old widow and I was able to do it my self and save big repair bill quoted by samsung!! Im disappointed in this product its only four years old. I was also disappointed in customer service
I totally agree. It makes me very happy to know that you were able to do this from the video. I do the how-to videos hoping to show people they can save a ton doing it themselves...when it is so easy! I will note that some people have reported that the problem returns even after this fix. Let me know if yours does...
Ok so its been about five days and I checked under drawer and there is a little soft ice and i can see a small ice drip on back so I guess i need to open up again and see if i can find the problem any suggestions?
Does it matter how or rather from which side to wrap the drain clip? It is better if we clip it over the defroster bar from the front and the wrap the tabs over from the back? I thought it might be easier if we place the drain clip from the back and fold the tabs over from back to the front.
Been waiting for this video ever since you said you started experiencing the water build up in the bottom of the fridge. Thank you for getting it made and uploaded quickly. After reading Amazon reviews for this clip, it seems some people state the freezing problem still returns after a period of time. I think I'll mark the Samsung off my list of possible fridges to replace my Nevercold 1210. That leaves the Haier HRQ16N3BGS & the GE GWE19JSLSS.
No problem Rod. I read those reviews but from what I could tell most were not about the RF18. Also I don't have any skin in the game and looked at the GE myself. Also on IRV2 I saw where lots of people had installed the GE with no trouble when I was researching this 3 years ago. IN ANY case you will be very happy when you get rid of the Nevercold... It was such a great improvement and I have so much more fridge and freezer space now. Best of luck!
@@trbowlin Yeah decided to go for the GE. A bit small in the freezer department but we can deal with it. Going to get it from Costco. It's the best price I could find and their customer service/return policy is of course phenomenal.
@@trbowlin Just found out that buying from Costco gives me and extra 1 year warranty on top of the GE year warranty plus if I use my Costco Citi card, which I planned on anyway, I get another 2 years. So 4 year warranty on the new fridge that would come with just a 1 year warranty if I bought from anywhere else. No brainer.
Yes and no. Yes it returned one time because I was in a very humid area and left the RV for 3 weeks. When I got back it had frozen up but defrosted fast. I did not clean the drain filters. Thanks for watching Vlad!
I got the part and melted the drain hole so the new part can sit in area that seems to freeze. Hard time getting the new part to sit down the hole. I kinda think that its working better, but I'm getting a little bit of ice forming but not as much as before. The clip really has to be on the heater coil tightly to work efficiently?
It started to freeze up again. I have the same new clip and again I have resistance getting the clip all the way down the drain hole. I'm think of trimming the clip so it will sit in the hole freely and the clip wraps around the coil tightly without any resistance. Any thoughts? I have the Samsung model # rf18hfenbsr-ac.
I know this is an old video. I took the panel off and the top was actually frozen and its not draining. Same issue or should I be looking at something else? Same exact fridge.
sorry for the delay. this comment slipped through the cracks. If you replaced the drain clip and it is still freezing up it could be the defroster thermocouple. They fail sometimes and cause the defroster to not run at all. This would cause the whole cooling coil to freeze up.
There is one more part that fails. It is a little temperature sensor that controls the defrost. I didn't have to change mine, but I know many who have had to do this. amzn.to/3M5ppX7
Thanks for this video. Looks like I could do this. I bought my fridge in 2016. Starting leaking 1 yr later was leaking on right side. Best buy repairman fixed it. Everything was fine until 2 months ago. It's now leaking on the left side . Should I try myself or call a repairman?
It is super easy. The only thing to be careful with is when you remove the cover that you don't pull it out so far that you break the wires. Just be careful and even if it does not fix it your only out a couple of bucks for the little tab. If it does fix it, then you've saved some money. I wouldn't read too much into which side the water is accumulating on, it just may be that there is more ice on one side verses the other forcing the water to drain a different direction. I say try it yourself and if that does not work then call the repairman.
When you poured the hot water on the drain plate to melt the ice did you wait for the water go down? I had poured hot water on the plate and notice the water would get ice cold pretty fast and so i reached my finger down the hole and felt ice. So i used a screw driver to try to break up the ice and pour more hot water until i could hear the water actually drain.
About 5 to 10 minutes. I've heard in some cases the drain line is also frozen badly as well. You may have had that situation and did what I would have done.
Is the part the same one for every Samsung fridge and some videos show that it is the element that goes around the metal part. How do I know its not the coil that its the plugging?
Well it could be, but the least expensive first step would be to install the clip. I can't say for sure that the clip I used would work for your fridge, but would be happy to verify that. What model is your fridge and I'll check.
You would kinda know if there was no ice near the drain NOR a blocked drain, both near the coils AND into the drip/evaporator pan backside and inside ridge guts. Have to remove the back screens.

So i got the part drilled out the old one went to install the new one but doesn’t go all the way down the drain. Not sure if the drain goes straight down or bends. Looks like it bends but I can’t tell
TR Bowlin I did everything I could to get it defrosted. Stuck the damn heated right in there after even removing the damn coil. What a pain in the ass. Ha
TR Bowlin this is our 3rd Samsung in 5 years. I made pc Richards replace it due to defrosting of feeezer and other issues. Total junk. Same exact fridge you have in your video.
I am having difficulties getting the back panel off. I took out the three screws (2 at bottom and 1 under the cap in middle towards the top), but it is stuck. I have it pulled off about 3/4 the way up. It seems to be stuck right in area where the cap/screw is. I pulled and my husband pulled. It is just not coming off. Anyone have any suggestions as to how to get it off or what could be preventing it from being pulled off?
@@trbowlinNo worries with delay. I was only getting back to it today anyway. :) The panel was frozen to the back. I emptied fridge , let it sit over night, and when I got up in the morning the panel came right off. Regrettably, I did not open doors when I let it sit over night (just wasn't thinking), so although panel came off, the vertical tube was still frozen. I had to let it sit all day, poured boiling water down the tube and used a hair dryer. Finally, I heard water drain through - and hopefully all the way through. I put it back together and waiting for it to cool down to put food back in. Your video gave me the encouragement/information I needed and I am very grateful. Not in budget to pay hundreds for repairman and definitely not in budget to pay thousands for new fridge.
I have one of these in my studio condo. I love it except for this problem! *(Getting items in and out of the freezer is tough unless the fridge doors are open too.)
Sorry, been away from the computer all day today. Sounds like it is really frozen up. Since its been a couple hours since you posted this, I hope it finally defrosted and started draining again. Let me know
@@trbowlin You are great at replying. The top layer seemed to thaw but not all the way to the bottom. @@trbowlin left it defrosting for 3 hours and now it's been on for about 8 hours and darn it there is frost gathering behind the drawer. Any suggestions for next steps? And again thanks.
@@skokie8231 Hum, it could be the defrost temperature sensor. It is inexpensive and I am away from the house till tomorrow night. When I get home I will look up the sensor *$10-12 and send you a link for it. Please verify the model number of the fridge for me so I get the right one. There should be a label on the fridge with the model number. Send it to me when you can and I'll send the link. If we replace the drain clip, the hoses as you mentioned and the sensor, that is just about everything that can possibly go wrong. Let me know on the model of the fridge.
Is there enough space to install the new water clip over the old existing one? Wouldn’t this provide for even more heat than just one of the clips, thereby ensuring this would never happen again?
We just did exactly that. We bent the tip of the old one back out of the way and installed the new clip over it. The old clip was riveted on and we didn't want to go thru the hassle of removing it and potentially damaging something in the process. If down the road it doesn't work right, I'll update my post.
I ordered my part today. In the mean time,I cut one out of an old beer can.I cut it to the same shape as the one on order. The original one is too short to even touch the drain.
Wow... why wouldn’t Samsung build the frig with this mod or include the mod in the purchase.... Thanks for sharing! Do you have a video of your tankless water heater install? Is it propane?
I guess they wanted to save a tenth of a penny on parts. It is beyond me and there are a number of class action suits against them on a number of their fridges for not working properly. I don't have a video of the install, but in an upcoming how-to video I talk about it. That should run in the next 4 weeks or so. Yes it is propane and one of the best upgrades I've done to the coach! Endless hot water!
AS far as I know it works on all Samsung 'Twin cool' fridges. There should be a logo on the back of the fridge that says Twin cool. It should work on it.
Perhaps. There is also a thermocouple known to need replacing in these fridges occasionally. There is a way to force the fridge into defrost mode. Using the model number for your fridge do a google search like 'force defrost samsung (enter your model #)' and you may find the instructions to do this. Force it into defrost mode wait a couple of minutes and carefully touch the defrost heater element, if it is warm then it is okay.
Hi TR: what’s your thoughts on pulling the cover off and leaving the wires connected to see how warm the defrost tube gets. My Samsung has the controls to put it in power defrost.
I have this exact refrigerator and problem. I’m at right now following your instructions to fix the issue. I ordered the evaporator clip and am ready to go but I’ve run into an issue. The center screw at the top behind the little cover was actually iced over and I had to use a hairdryer to melt the ice so I could remove the screw. When I then loosened up the entire cover to remove it the styrofoam that is attached to the back of the panel stayed stuck to the rear of the fridge I assume because it’s frozen to the unit behind it. I’m using a hair dryer to accelerate the defrost process so I can remove the styrofoam but so far it’s not budging. Any idea how long it might take for this deep freeze to melt down or any suggestions?? Of course I’m doing this right now at 8:30 pm EST. Hoping you just might see this in real time. I’ll be watching for your reply. Thx in advance.

I did this on my aunts worked great no issues 1 ½ years later. Tried on my exact fridge and hours later it’s starting to drip water underneath the drawers again. Any suggestions?
dang, I hate that... Was the drain freely draining after you defrosted it? Sounds like the drain wasn't totally clear of ice. There is one other potential problem and that is with the thermocouple (the wire thing attached to the freezer coils). Sometimes they fail and need to be replaced. I hate to say it because it is a pain to empty the fridge, but I would open it back up and make sure the drain is draining freely. If that doesn't fix it here is a link for the thermocouple. amzn.to/3HBkuv4
@@trbowlin thanks for replying so quickly! Yep! The first time I could hear the ice and water falling and poured hot water down and instantly drained. I opened it back poured pour water down and heard it drain again. Hoping it was any leftover dripping from the coils. I will check out the wiring thank you!
This may be a dumb question, but is it necessary I turn off the fridge to follow these steps? Or can I get away with just putting the fridge on Cooling mode? It’s just a pain to unplug my fridge.
there is also a problem with the condensate drains in the back, they have these tupid little rubber stoppers that plug up very easily, if you remove the back and pull the condensate drain(s) pipe(s) you will find them at the top and you will say what the ???
I cleaned the two tubes at the back of the refrigerator and installed the T shaped metal part in the front compartment. I thawed out everything during the installation. I checked under the wide tray this morning and there was about a pint or so of water there already! Could this be from the thawing? I cleaned up the water and will check again in a few days to see if there is more water. Anyone had this problem after fixing?
Is it worth trying this on our Samsung fridge that is 10 years old? Are the new ones doing the same? It looks like Samsung pretty much dominates the larger french door market. What brand would you recommend?
Well, the part is $6.00, and it takes about an hour to install. Small investment if it works and extends the life of your current fridge. As far as brand to recommend, I'm not up to date on things, so I recommend you ask Mr. Google. Search for consumer reports best fridge. You can trust their reviews. Thanks for watching... p.s. a plus is you get to clean out the fridge :-)
I installed the same fridge last year after watching your install videos. Silly question but what happens to the water that drains out? I dont remember hooking up an external drain hose.
Not a silly question but a good one. There is another tray where the water drains to and then is evaporated with heat generated by the compressor hence no drain lines. Take care!

@@gaverbach No, other than one incident of freezing up after I was gone for three weeks it has worked perfectly.
Thanks very much for this. My fridge is cool again thanks to your video!

Once again, your video to the rescue. Having this same problem.
It's an easy fix! Thanks Andrew!
Thank you for an excellent and helpful video. I had the same issue and solved it using your help. It has been 3-weeks and knocking on wood still fixed.
That's is great to hear. Thanks for taking the time to come back and let other viewers know!
I just ordered my part. I really appreciate you taking the time to post this. I was completely frustrated and baffled. Now it makes perfect sense. I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks again....Terri :)
Awesome. I love hearing back from people after they fix it. Looking forward to hearing from you!
Saved the day. Samsung wanted $400 to do this job. I did it for $7 with a part off amazon.

Thanks for posting this video, much appreciated.
My pleasure!
This fix worked! I also replaced the drains. Bought all on amazon
Great to hear! Thanks for your support and the feedback
Can you tell me the name of the parts. I’m having a hard time with Samsung finding the right parts. The exact name would be helpful.
@@BostonsOfTerror That's a good idea, but 14 GA may be a little big. 18 GA may work better.
good point.

Yes, if the clip is not tight on the defroster element the heat transfer to the clip will not be as efficient. Take care!
Please check your drain pipe in the back, Mine had same issue not solved after replacing the clip then I found out the drain pipe had dirt and its blocked, After I cleaned it up its good . Please check your drain pipe

Thanks, Carlos. It might work but I think you'd have to do it so often it would be a big pain in the rear. Good idea though

What part is ordered? Is it on Amazon?
Will the fix work for Samsung refrigerator model RF20HFENBSR? Asking as the defrosting heating element seems to come down much closer to the draining hole in my refrigerator. Thanks!
I'm sorry. I am not familiar with that model, so I can't say for sure.
Hey man, thanks for making this video. I just replaced the part in mine. Hope it works.
Really appreciate you taking the time to show how it’s down.
No problem 👍
I'm going to attempt this when my part comes in. I didn't see did you remove a clip that was already on there? What kind of tool do I use for that.
Does it matter how or rather from which side to wrap the drain clip? It is better if we clip it over the defroster bar from the front and the wrap the tabs over from the back? I thought it might be easier if we place the drain clip from the back and fold the tabs over from back to the front.
No, what ever works best for you!
Same problem. Replays the metal condenser works so far but I'm wondering if the fan its still working because was stuck with ice for couple days.
Hard for me to say without looking at it. in that case you may have to call a repair guy. Sorry
Did you have the problem return? Did you need to clean the drain filters?
Yes, the tighter the better. You get better heat transfer. Also, there is a temperature sender that sometimes fails.

We did the fix a few years ago. Unfortunately we are having the same problem. Any suggestions on how to correct the issue?
@@trbowlin thank you!

Is there enough space to install the new water clip over the old existing one? Wouldn’t this provide for even more heat than just one of the clips, thereby ensuring this would never happen again?
I don't think there's enough room in the drain line for both. It's pretty small. Oh and btw, 5 months since I made the fix and it has not recurred
We just did exactly that. We bent the tip of the old one back out of the way and installed the new clip over it. The old clip was riveted on and we didn't want to go thru the hassle of removing it and potentially damaging something in the process. If down the road it doesn't work right, I'll update my post.

Does it work for all Samsung models!?
AS far as I know it works on all Samsung 'Twin cool' fridges. There should be a logo on the back of the fridge that says Twin cool. It should work on it.
Could it be we need to replace the defrosting wire?

If this fix DOES NOT work for you, add a heater cord (just search samsung fridge, you'll get lots of hits), worked for me, was easy to do.
Thx in advance.

dang, I hate that...
This may be a dumb question, but is it necessary I turn off the fridge to follow these steps? Or can I get away with just putting the fridge on Cooling mode? It’s just a pain to unplug my fridge.
I would highly recommend that you turn the power off. You might try looking for the circuit breaker for the fridge and shut it off.
there is also a problem with the condensate drains in the back, they have these tupid little rubber stoppers that plug up very easily, if you remove the back and pull the condensate drain(s) pipe(s) you will find them at the top and you will say what the ???
It amazed me that they would save .001 cents worth of aluminum on the damn thing in the first place.
Yes, it could be. I've not had any reports like this so yea, watch it for a couple of days. Thanks!
Hi Jack - so, did it eventually stop leaking water? I'm hoping the new clip and cleaning the drain tubes will do the trick.
Take care!
