- This isn't called for very often in patterns, but if you do encounter it, you might agree with me that it's the craziest possible way to insert your needle to work a stitch. This technique puts a twist on the purl stitch.
The pattern for the green sweater on the mannequin can be found here:

Wild stitch! I keep forgetting so I come back to your explanation for a refresher every time. So clear! Thank you.
Is there anything you cannot teach and explain well? You are a great teacher!!!
I have a sweater that has been sitting for 2 years that I have gone back to finish and couldn't for the life of me remember how I did it on the back and front so now that I have watched your video I can tackle the sleeves. The written directions made no sense but you showed it and explained so clearly. Thank you.
I am starting a scarf and it has PTBL . I had to watch you to get it. Thank you so much.
Thank you! I encountered this stitch in a baby bootie - p2tog tbl. I just knew you would have a video tutorial on this. I appreciate your work.
This stitch is super easy for continental knitters. It is also used a lot in Jacqueline Cieslak's designs.
VeryPink Knits saves the day again. ❤❤❤
I always come to your videos when something doesn't make sense to me when knitting (T . T) Thank you. Your videos are always helpful! ^^
Me too - I look through all my search results and click on these videos first. Clear, quick and to the point. Love them.
Thank goodness! I am knitting a MKAL that calls for ptbl to close up a YO. I had no idea how to do it, but I figured you would. Thank you!
Thank you! I had never come across this stitch. This video made it super easy
Very helpful. had to remember how to ptbl because it is in the Shalom sweater. Thanks!
I can't give you a link to the green sweater here in the comments, but I've added the link in the video description field, just below the video.
Thank you for this. I'm working on a vintage sweater pattern which has several uncommon things but this stitch is what stumped me.
Well.... the more you live, the more you learn...
thanks that was good to know.
Thanks - I've just been ktbl every time I saw ptbl because I just wasn't sure how I was supposed to do that.
Never mind I found it. I should always check your site first.
Thank you! There are a lot of ptbl's in the Geology Shawl.
Thanks, this clip saved the day!
That is an odd stitch - in fact, I've never heard of a stitch called "left twist using a purl". By the sound of it, I would say that this stitch here (purl through the back loop) is probably what the pattern designer intended.
Thank you Stacie. You have again helped me. Thanks to you and your wonderful tutorials my knitting has progressed. I have knitted things that I would never have thought that I could because of your help. Thank you.
Thank you for this tutorial 💕
Another popular pattern calling for that stitch is Miette cardi by Andi Satterlund. Thanks for the video
I love your videos, do you have one that shows you how to tink purl through back loop???
Thank you!
I was trying to do this: "With RN, go behind first st and k second st without removing it from LN, ktbl first st and slip both off LN." The first part of this instruction sounds like either ptbl or ktbl in the second stitch. Which do you think it is? Is it something completely different? Should I just give up because I'm completely missing a dimension here.
Thank you for posting.
Very easy to understand, thank u
I’m a super beginner but am planning a project using PTBL and have this question- Rather than doing the needle gymnastics, could you remount your stitch and then do a purl? You would be purling the back leg instead of the front leg but the back leg would be “in front”?
Yes - it will slow you down a bit, but you will get the same results!
Laura Nelkin calls for a 2ptbl too!!

Hi. This is closer to what I'm looking for. I have a pattern that calls for a left twist using a purl stitch but every left twist I find is with a knit stitch. Can you help? Thanks.
Isn’t there another stitch that can be worked to achieve the same result?
I found the following substitute for P2togTBL (purl 2 together through the back loop). I have not been able to find a substitute for purling one stitch through the back loop.
Purl one stitch. Slip it purlwise back over to the left needle. Pass the next stitch over the purled stitch on the left needle. Slip that purled stitch over to the right needle.
Hope that helps.
How do you sl st through back loop?
Thank you! So what is the difference exactly ?
It creates a twisted stitch, you really only want to use it if the pattern calls for it.
How do I purl through the back loop on a yarn over?
What pattern is the green cardigan on the dressform behind you? It's pretty!
do you have a slow-motion version of this video? if not, would you be willing to make one?
Ah, you are correct - I don't have a slo-mo video on this technique! I will fix that, thank you. :)
Staci, if I purl through the back loop on the wrong side, then view it from the right side, does it look the same as stitches knitted through the back loop done on the right side? In the same way a ssk is the opposite of a k2tog? I'm going to experiment in the round, so since every row will be worked from the right side is that how it would work? Thanks.
Is a ptbl the reverse of ktbl? I want to knit a hat that uses ktbl, p rib but I want to check my gauge and want to make a flat swatch. I'm a newer knitter and this is my first knit hat pattern. If I'm working back and forth would I ptbl, k?
It isn't an exact reverse, but it will work fine for a swatch.
Thank you for the quick reply! I appreciate it. I'd love to learn what the match would be at some point.
Does this mean it is only done from the wrong side of the work?
kskc1234 - no, this can be called for in a pattern to work on either the right-side or the wrong-side of the work.
Can you link the shawl pattern you reference at the beginning of the video? Thank you.
You can search for it, it is called Clapotis, and it is on knitty.com.
What about Continental?
The stitch is worked the exact same way, the only thing that is different is the hand you use to hold the working yarn.
Thank you, I was doing that wrong!
Staci how would you knit through the back loop (K1 tbl)

Thanks for the video, but I don't think it's correct to call it a "VeryPink" Technique. Because...well...it's not.
+Genevieve JochetzGenevieveJ - it is a VeryPink technique *video*. The stitch is hundreds of years old.

True on all counts.
