    You are correct, in the fact that the amps sims sound similar using the same IR. However the same can be said for real amps as well. Using the same speaker cab, most amps will sound very similar to each other. However this is where things differ and I'm going to use the Neural plug-ins as an example.
    Fortin Cali has more fizz in its top end than Granophyre or Gojira and seems a bit more violent. The Granophyre is a bit smoother but has more low end than either Cali or Gojira. Gojira is more balanced in its tone than either Grano or Cali.
    So yes IRs contribute to the tone, but even if you put each of those three amps I mentioned at 12, use the same guitar with the same pickups, they will react differently to each other. Just like a real amp and speaker.

      Thanks for the compliment! I switch between being an IR convert and amp sim convert. But mostly the switch in regards of amp sims is just because the Fortin Cali lacks a delay/Reverb section otherwise it would be perfect in every sense!

    wassup dawg, so yeah man, like I got all the IRs free from some Russian pirate bay, 136GB, tested most Marshalls with greenbacks etc in Nameless, Cali etc etc, I can confirm the heads sound allot different based on sustain, the tone...you nailed it, they sound alike, all but Howard Benson by STL, he combined marshall and wizard cabinets...making brutal tight mode Marshall plexi sound, at first I thought its as normal, then I added a ds1 pedal and it screamed...yet tight UNLIKE the rest of the BS.
    So taking the STL Howard Benson and adding other IRs I still got that tight amp with those cabinets, but I still prefer Wizard cabinets and maybe Jens Brogen downtuned rhythm...just a few..

    If you use the stock impulses from the amp sim you’ll probably notice a bigger difference. I like to use the stock impulses in neural Dsp because to me sounds the most real and full. He’s right though, if you use an IR loader you might as well just pick one amp sim you love to use and know how to tone stack because it’s like using an actual amp. Changing out the head won’t make a big difference but changing the cab makes a night and day difference.

    Neural's sound actually noticeably better than the rest. I would say that you will be totally covered with one of the Archetypes or one of the Fortin to get most of the tones people might need.
    I would rank them, in the context of this video:
    Cali
    Gojira
    Omega/STL, sort of equal in quality
    Nalex
    Tourmafrost
    Emissary

    • @PippPriss
      @PippPriss  3 года назад

      Very interesting! I do agree that the NeuralDSP has a more finessed touch to them - the question is, if it's worth the price. In my personal opinion as a avid user/player of these plugins I would say yes, since I play regularly via these plugins and I need "dem feelz". But do they matter to somebody producing music and just wants to dial in a kickass guitar sound? Then stuff like the Nalex Ninja (or for a matter of fact one of all the awesome free plugins available) as well as investing in a set of good impulse responses might be a better choice.

    • @ItsNotaTuhmah
      @ItsNotaTuhmah 3 года назад

      @@PippPriss I believe that there's no need to get all Neural Plugins. That would be too expensive and returns way diminished.
      If STL is working on subscriptions, then that's even more expensive.
      You might have forgot to include ML Soundlab. Fluff is probably the only one who's close to be a competitor to Neural in quality and price.

    • @PippPriss
      @PippPriss  3 года назад +1

      @@ItsNotaTuhmah I never got any decent tone out of Amped Roots, but the problem being definitely me, not the plugin. Also, ML Soundlabs amp Sims tend to behave strange as soon as you mess with the pots, at least that's my feeling.
      And on the Neural DSP stuff I agree, I guess the most flexible is Gojira currently, followed by Nolly and Plini.
      STL is on the long run more expensive due to subscription, but they add a new amp each month, so that's cool.

    • @ItsNotaTuhmah
      @ItsNotaTuhmah 3 года назад

      @@PippPriss I agree that ML's knobs are way too sensitive and the few presets on them are terrible haha. They can sound great but need some serious exploration of each amp. The 5034 and Friedman are really good.
      About Neural, I believe that Nolly can actually do like 95% of things that Gojira does. The 3rd amp on both is quite similar.

    First of all, great vid as always.
    I watched this when it came out but didn't put my hat in the ring lol.
    Tldr for me is that while Neural is hyped to death, there is a bit of a reason for that. They do sound quite good and ful. They are pro plugins that bring the goods. The price? Well I won't debate all that because there are many things that are dirt cheap that work great and spendy things that should be discounted. NDSP rides that line and they know it.
    Musings if you're bored and wanna keep reading:
    When I test sims out these days, I look for how they treat harmonics and low tuned stuff. There are some sims that have a very rounded sound with harmonics. It's smooth and very shiny if that makes sense. Others have this sort of broken, almost fuzz approach to them. So perhaps Nalex will have a smooth crushing tone where Neural Omega will have a more complex and broken up waveform.
    As always, the IR makes up the end shape of the tone and what people hear. In this I dug Gojira the most.
    Cheers
    PS: I've been playing with Vadim's / Vtar amps plugins of the Cali and Raven (cali amp) etc and they are so damn good. Gonna buy all those soon as I've just been playing with the demos. They have the rich complexity like NDSP and only the amp. Sometimes I don't need a full amp cab and EQ suite because I like to work modular style. And also no Ilock. If NDSP ever ditches Ilock it'll be a good day. haha

    Great comparison and quality content! I think Neural and Vadim's (not only Tourmafrost, Sunnyhornia and Slowrunner included) stuff sounds best. I hear a lot about the "feel" of these amp sims, what are your thoughts on how to measure this "feel" thing? Maybe something related to the initial response or dynamics of the pick attack?
    About the 3rd cab, I think it's the way Nolly voices the IRs he captures, with some kind of push in the mids while retaining the other ends. Very well done indeed.

    • @PippPriss
      @PippPriss  3 года назад

      Thanks for watching! I guess a lot of the feel to me personally comes from latency and has not very much to do with the sim being used itself but the drivers of the interface. Also, the IR is what brings an amp sim often to life or kills it for me. But actually, I am so stuck in the rabbit hole, I don't really have an opinion on feel - I just enjoy and play, most amp sims have a good feeling to them. ;-) I also change constantly the amp sims, rotating them around and enjoying different aspects which each one of them.

  • @vivekmehta5172

    Let's do a thought experiment
    Suppose we test many different Amps and Cabs
    By playing a pure 440hz signal as the input
    They will all sound extremely similar.
    Now suppose we have a test signal that contains 440 Hz and 1000 Hz
    Again, all amps and cabs will sound very similar.
    The point I'm trying to make is that almost all metal amps have a very peculiar internal EQ that only lets some frequencies pass through.
    Also, high gain amps tends to make every signal into a square wave, which is then filtered by the Cab
    So for high gain, metal sounds, it is easier to deduce that all amps sound similar while the Cab is the major determiner of final tone.
    Things are very different with low gain sounds where the amp is not converting all inputs into square waves.
    It would be very educational to have a similar video with low and medium gain amps, or settings , and play some blues, pop, rock. I guess the findings will be that the Amp and Cabs both share an important part in shaping the final tone for low and medium gain tones.

    • @PippPriss
      @PippPriss  3 года назад

      A valid point which I can share 100% percent from technical standpoint. Also, nearly all High gain amplifiers have a fairly similar technology based upon them - it's gain staging one way or the other. When we look at circuits of clean amplifiers, then we mostly also will have lesser components and more individual circuits, so there is more headroom to play around to get some vastly different tones. Also, the filters can be designed totally different, because on clean sounds, the frequency range of what sounds appealing to our ears is higher.
      That all said, I totally suck at clean and crunch sounds, and most plugin users tend to be all about dem chugs, which is why I think that lesson to learn here can be that not only the amp sim is important, but the choice of impulses is very important as well to shape "your" tone! Thanks for watching and contributing to the discussion!

    Yep...that's 100% true. High gain amps do sound similar, there's a very little difference between them. In the real world of tube amps, the cabinets are making the biggest difference.
