Thanks for supplying it, really great to see Varivas take on an x4, gotta be up there with the best I have tested, if not the best.

Is there a reason why companies still make x4 braids? it seems pretty inferior in terms of smoothness. Does it come with any advantages over x8?

A couple of advantages that I can think of. First they are likely easier and cheaper to make, second, because of their rough finish it can be very useful in cutting through light vegetation (weed, grass etc) as the surface is like a serration.

@@thelinelaboratory thats interesting. i've never used x4 because I always thought it was just lower quality. I might need to give it a go next time I respool my trout rod.

I think that with the same strenght (lb) of braid, a x4 is more resistant to abrasion because the single strands are bigger. The x8 advantages are smoothness on the cast, less noisy@@jimmyrecard6021
Maybe that is something that this channel can test :)

X4 braids : The more durable, abrasion-resistant braid gets stuck on the spool during casting casts.

x4 braid is for vertical jigging where smooth casting is not needed.

“Excellence in all tests”, I would have thought it less than excellent in line diameter variation. Being way over actual diameter allows an “excellence” award for being so close to its claimed breaking strain, such a great result was only achieved by exaggerating the diameter. Or do we now just accept that all lines are hugely over their claimed diameter?

A large line diameter variation is actually a desirable feature in some situations, and as stated in the video, this large variation is typical for an x4 braid. Taking the average of all the diameter measurements has it at only 11% over the claimed diameter which is closer than the vast majority of braids we have tested.
