On my last day in Barbados, I headed off to an amazing supporter’s home for a traditional Trini breakfast!
Auntie Indra is the reason why I came to Barbados-she invited me, and now she’d be cooking some delicious Trini dishes for me and my friends Craig and Nerissa! She’s also Nerissa’s mom and owns the amazing Airbnb I’d been staying at!

She had already made some baras and smoked herring, and was also starting on the aloo pies and bakes. She had tamarind and mango sauces, as well as pepper sauce. Just watching the cooking process was taking me back to my time in Trinidad!
I met her cat, Ginger, and watched her flatten and fry the baras. Baras are the base ingredient for doubles, which is like a play on an Indian dish called chole bhature. They top it with chickpeas (chana) and sometimes vegetables and even meat. They also add different sauces like tamarind and pepper.
I even tried my hand at making and frying a bara, and then we fried an aloo pie, which is stuffed with potatoes. They’re almost like Trini potato empanadas! Then, she fried up some fry bake, which we’d be eating with some smoked herring.
Next she took the rest of the bara batter, molded it into balls, and fried them. These are called pholourie! They’re like little crispy fritters.
First, she boils and washes the herring, as it’s very salty. Then, she sautees some onions and peppers in a pan and adds the smoked herring, a Bajan pepper, and green sauce.
Then, it was time to eat. We started with the doubles, which had an amazing, crispy dough. They were perfect with the chana, mango sauce, tamarind sauce, cucumber chutney, and pepper sauce! Then, I ate the rest of the filling with some pholourie!
I added some of my David’s Been Here hot sauce, which added a tropical kick with the pineapple and guava! It was fantastic!
Next was the aloo pie, which we added chana, tamarind, mango, cucumber, and pepper sauce to. The flavors and contrast in textures between the chana, cucumber, and pie was also excellent. What an amazing breakfast! My David’s Been Here sauce made it even tastier!
Next was the tomato choka, which is almost like a salsa, and the bake. You open it up and add the herring and choka to make a sandwich. It was smoky and a little salty, and the peppers were hitting me a little bit!
It was my last day in Barbados, so I was going all-out with the food. I couldn’t help but go back in for more pholourie and doubles. The food had me sweating!
If you’re ever in Barbados, stay at Auntie Indra’s Airbnb! It has 1 bedroom, 1 bath, a full kitchen, and more! It’s so close to the beach and is perfect.

Representing for Trini food in Barbados... Brilliant!
I will represent it anywhere i can find it :)
@@Davidsbeenhere And this is one of the reasons why I love you so much!😘
@@masalamouth yeah Mary. David doesn't forget. I have seen him reference Trinidad and Tobago in some of his other series. Trinidadians and Tobagonians owe him a great deal of gratitude for that. Now everyone wants to eat Trini doubles. Thank you David.🇹🇹🇨🇦
@@JudyT868 You're so right Judy..David is always talking about Trini foods anywhere he goes.
@@Davidsbeenhere big thank you to you David.❤️🤗🙏🕊️🇹🇹🇨🇦
I just watched this for the second time and David you make the breakfast look so mouth-watering. It's now 2:47 pm in Toronto and I am drooling, especially today when we have our first snowfall. Lots of snow outside. Second look at the video makes it even more enticing. Nerissa's mom did a great job. Trini to the bone. Trini food, absolutely the best.🇹🇹🇨🇦
@davidsbeenhere I enjoy how you showcased the Caribbean and the lovely foods we have to offer
its my pleasure! Thats why I do this. Its an honor to travel to such beautiful places and meet amazing people like yourself. Thank you Leon!
Count down to Trinidad carnival has began David, I know your gonna be here having a blast 🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹
Auntie Indra gave you some good lessons in Trini cooking...like how you know so much about Trini foods David... you remember all the names...how it's done...and above all I like that you said Bake/N/Shark is your NO1 fish sandwich. Another amazing one of your videos..Thanks David and stay safe on all your travels.

What a lovely meal you both had. We know how much you fell in love with doubles. Lovely lady.
We had lots of fun! ❤
Trinidad food so good! They have to cook it in Barbados!!
Great premiere. Besides you eating, watching you making your favorite doubles was entertaining. Every part of it was delicious!!!
thank you so much my friend! you are the best!!
Food looks amazing 😋😋😋😋 And yes two bites eating those doubles. David you are a true trini 🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹
Another great job David. Happy you love our food 🇹🇹
0:49 "Shoes off, Tuckers" such a welcome!
I don't think it says "tuckers" 😆
@@MolyBDenum-lh3wy it looks like an "f" to me in reference to the "shoes off". They probably forgot to move the mat not thinking that it would show up in the video. 🇹🇹🇨🇦
Great video David! Love when you go into someone’s home kitchen.
Glad you enjoyed it❤❤❤❤❤❤
David i've seen you eat everywhere but you were straight GRUBBING on this meal!!! Love to see it!
Loved this meal 😂
Thank you Indra
Love your videos mate.♥️
Doubles yum breakfast so good would love to try it all. Nice home cooked meal is the best. ♥ Really have got to love Trini food and hope one day I can have some authentic Trini food ♥
So good! ❤ the best my friend! I want to have my own Trini spot in Miami 😂 one day!
@@Davidsbeenhere And I would love to see that happen! I have faith you will one day♥
WOW!!! Breakfast of Trini champions. Good Trini home -cooked food. And it's true that it's always better in Trinidad: home of the doubles. You did a good job making your first bara. I am drooling for some of that now 8:35 am Canadian time. I use yeast in my fried bakes and they puff up really quick and it makes a better pocket to put the filling in it. Baking powder makes it soft. And yes David, you can lick the plate. In some countries, it's an honor to the cook because it shows how much you enjoyed the food. Nice, enjoyable video. Glad you remembered so much and referenced Trinidad and Tobago. David in doubles heaven 😊. Sorry I missed the chat: was talking to my sister in Trinidad at the same time on what's app. 🙏🕊️🇹🇹🇨🇦
You have no idea! this was soooooo good!
@@Davidsbeenhere soooo happy for you that you actually met a Trini to make it so authentic for you. Who would have expected that? The good thing is that you didn't need a doggie bag because it's right there for you. Truth be told David, I lick my plate and fingers too and anybody who criticizes, probably does it too. That's why we have water to wash up afterwards. Sorry I missed the 'live' earlier but hope to catch you on the next one. Here's hoping you got a good rest. Be well and blessings to you and your family.❤️🙏🕊️🇹🇹🇨🇦

Me too! It was so good. Thank you so much for your support! Have a really great night.
Aunty Indra is definitely a Trini who lives in Barbados from time to time.
so good!
The premiere turned out king.
of course it was epic! love your name!
I can't blame David; i love doubles just the same as he does (naahhh I love it more! 😅)
double loving contest? ❤️
@@Davidsbeenhere 👍yh but no contest tho cause we all like to savor their awesomeness- the different blends of chutney, the peppahsauce, soft melty baras- it's just too good man...the contest could be a poll "who is your favorite Trini doubles & aloo pie spot?" And then we get the poll-winner to show up for a short meet n greet here with your fans (try n keep in mind for next time)😁
Food looks delicious
epic!!!!
Big man.... how you goin all bout d place looking for trini food so 😂.... is bess you check we for a trini Christmas ... round 2 😎

@@Davidsbeenhere thank you very much for visiting Guyana and the other caribbean countries. You're amazing and thank you for showing our west indian culture to the world. David, when are you going to Grenada? 😊
David we hook you in trinidad boy can't stop talking about us I LOVE IT..
YES!!!!!!!🙂
Because I love it so much ❤❤❤
Bajan bakes are different fun Trini bakes. Bajan bakes have in sugar, smaller, round, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
Bajan Master: if we use yeast in the fried bakes then we put sugar in the dough, which I do. It all depends on what process different people use. A yeast dough makes it exactly the way you say: it puffs up faster, crispy on the outside and it makes a nicer pocket to put whatever you want in it. I find that baking powder doesn't do that and the fried bake comes out soft, not with the crispy outside.🇹🇹🇨🇦
Fucking loving it, so relatable to Indian food
I’m in Barbados rn we should do something
I just read the mat
my best bro david looking really handsome thank you for your huge respect against cpec friendship countries lot of love from your best bro viki 💙
Plz visit hornbill festival of Nagaland sir.. starting from Dec 1 to Dec 10
Barbados and Trinidad seem similar but different ❤
Hey David. Great Vid. Are auntie and Nerissa of Indian heritage?
every trini that looks indian comes from Indian heritage as there was huge immigration about one hundred years ago.
@@Davidsbeenhere Thanks. Great vid. After seeing Nerissas mum, I can see where she gets her pretty smile from. Keep up the great vids. I love all the content you put out and the amazing way you show all the different cultures and countries and all the amazing history of each country and amazing places to visit 👍🏾
@@Davidsbeenhere Almost 200 years ago. East Indians were brought as indentured servants to work the sugar cane plantations. Indians arrived in British Guiana (today Guyana) a few years before Trinidad.
You're right David. You can eat Trini food all over the world, but, it will never taste like Trini food from Trinidad!
Never 😂😂
👍👍👍👍👍
It is ok to eat Doubles without pepper sauce. You shouldn't suffer while eating it.
🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹✌
👍♥️♥️♥️🇹🇹
David, you have travelled all the way to Barbados and yet all you talk about is trini food. I get it you love trini food but please give the respect to the cuisine of where you are at. To be honest even after watching your latest Barbados vlogs I didn’t get the food culture of this island because you were referring to Trinidad to often.
Just a quick thought
I'm Trini an I agree its a lil overbearing 😒😌
Because trini food is better than bajan food.
A fire in Brighton happend the next day
Question: Is doubles sold in Barbados, also do Bajans know about and like doubles,❓
Yes they sell it..
Yes an we love them 😋
I'm sure there's some sold but I've never seen or heard anyone mention anything about getting doubles here
That's my granny's name
That girl is a beauty. 🌷
Try cheffte
im from romania...salut....
that mic is so sensitive i can hear you're stomach walls breaking the food inside :))
salut
🤣❤️
Trinidadian running to Barbados.
She said she works 2WEEKS on and off in Barbados (work related)
Doubles related with Indian chaats....are u?
I really dont know how the hell u got over 1m subs, putting out these kind of contents.
Correction: Doubles are definitely a Trini thing but we do make them as well in Guyana.
Fya, a lot of Trini’s and Guyanese people are found in Barbados. All three places intertwine and so does our culture. Can’t make blanket statements without knowing the facts.
To David Trinidad food is always Indian food!! He should watch how Mark Wiens did is Trinidad 🇹🇹 videos Mayberry he can learn a thing or two.
Facts
Naw man it’s not pure indian food. It has a Caribbean twist. ❤❤❤
@@Davidsbeenhere Sorry David your concept of Trinidad and Tobago food is very limited. Further you published incorrect information about the origins of many Trinidad and Tobago food when you visited our island. Be humble, learn and do better!
Why is her fry bake so white !!??
Barbados is often referred to as the Culinary Capital of the Caribbean.
😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂😂
No it's not
It’s so good! ❤❤❤
😂😂😂😂 since when?
shortie is fine
Hello David! Haven't you you got stomatch problems?Just asking because you are just chewing foods 2-6 times and swallowes them, and it is not good for yor stomatch?
you have no tablemanners at all
😥
Nick names are always given by others right? I think your nickname should be "boogersnort". Let me know if you agree.
Lmao wtf
Wash hands with soap
@13:29 if looks could kill!!! You will definitely not be invited into her kitchen again. Also her telling you and you asking do you have to was your hands. Just eww!!
Aloo pie isn't even Caribbean food but Indian.
Dont know why they ruin the aloo pie with channa
Table etiquette is warranted. Licking a plate, smacking and slurping, putting a serving spoon in your mouth then back in the dish, and touching your nose then handling a stack of bake ....all are unsanitary habits.
Did anyone die doh?
Thanks for the tips!❤
@@Davidsbeenhere it's ok. We Caribbean people are very forgiving to foreigners and actually expect you to make mistakes in our countries. You weren't born and raised in the Caribbean so we don't expect u to act like us and get everything right. You're going to do things or make mistakes and we know that. We don't take it seriously. Alot of times we just laugh about it, here in Barbados atleast 🇧🇧💯
The food looks great, but this guy's table manners leaves much to be desired. Did he even use soap to wash his hands?
😟
you didn’t even wash your hands properly 😭 and the way you took the spoon and ate from it idk it’s a lil rude to me.
I'm sorry Talia. 😔
Who goes to Barbados to eat Trinidad food? I'm from neither countries but that just sounds disrespectful to Barbados!🙄😕
They were actually the hosts of my trip to Barbados and are of Trini origin. It was actually respectful because I wanted to make my hosts to Barbados feel a part of my videos as well.
Trinidadian food is good anywhere 😋
@@Davidsbeenhere Yes David gratitude to you hosts..and I believe Bajans love Trini foods just as we like theira.
Not disrespectful at all to 🇧🇧 Barbados 🇧🇧. We enjoy our Guyanese, Trinidadian and Jamaican restaurants in Barbados 🇧🇧. Our Islands are made up of many different Caribbean Nationalities. Barbados have always had strong family ties to Grenada,St. Vincent, Grenada, St. Lucia, Guyana and Trinidad , Tobago and Jamaica. I will be enjoying Guyanese, Jamaican and Trinidadian food while I am here in Barbados on holiday. Ackee Tree (Trinidadian owned) Reggies Real Jerk (Jamaican owned) Our Guyanese community here own and operate many Rum shops , Bars and Restaurants. I shall further add we have clothing stores and other businesses owned by our Caribbean brothers and sisters.
Take a chill 💊.. food is universal..
We should say the same about pizza being eaten outside of Italy or burgers eaten outside of the United States.. nothing disrespectful about that..
However on a side note.. David is now an official Trinidadian he can't get enough of us, he's hooked for life now 🇹🇹😉
It's all good and well accept for poor table manners, open mouth chewing and touching other people's food...... it's not Mark Wiens...that's for sure.....
Sorry about that. I will be better!
Why do people insist on comparing David to Mark Weins? That's my only comment here.🇹🇹🇨🇦
...except.
lol stop it
Yeah I love David but the touching up food especially after licking fingers.... I won't compare to Mark tho, they all do it.
