With another morning in beautiful Iraq ahead of me, I set out to have a tasty Iraqi breakfast before exploring the largest cemetery in the world!
My guides Jafar and Ali from Bil Weekend, my friend Tasos, and I started at a restaurant in Najaf that sells beef and lamb kebabs. Some of the kebabs are a mix of the two meats!
    📝SUBSCRIBE TO MY NEWSLETTER: bit.ly/3JR71yN
    🌳 MY LINKTREE: linktr.ee/davidsbeenhere
We watched them grind and form the kebabs, and grill them. Then, we watched them bake some khubz bread in the tanoor oven. It all looked so good!
The kebabs came with some charred onions, tomatoes, and a wedge of lemon. Jafar showed me how to make a sandwich with all of the ingredients, with some sumac sprinkled on top.
The sumac was a vibrant purple color. Everything combined was so flavorful and smoky. I loved the fresh burst of juiciness from the tomato! I also loved the chicken shorba, which is a thick chicken soup.
We also had hummus and an assortment of vegetable dishes, including some purple cabbage and baytinijan. I loved the hummus with the kebab! But we still had more breakfast spots to hit up!
At our next spot, we’d have some ash and hareesa. Ash is a thick stew made from grains, monk peas, cow peas, and beef. Hareesa is made from wheat and beef, and they add cinnamon to it! The ash is a dark, rich brown color, while the hareesa is pale in color, similar to hummus. They both cook for about 12 hours.
They serve both in containers and finish them by topping them with a ladle full of scalding hot oil! The ash was so thick and earthy, and quite rich. I loved the shredded beef, bans, and crispy onions in it.
It was phenomenal. It’s the type of dish that will fill you up and give you energy in the morning! It was very thick and tasty!
The hareesa was also thick, but had a hint of sweetness from the cinnamon in it. They can actually make it sweeter by adding sugar to it. We added some and mixed it. It made it very sweet!
I loved how sweet, thick, and filling it was, but between it and the ash, I was too full! Plus, the guys there were so kind. Their shop wasn’t too busy because most of the people in the city were along the pilgrimage route to get free food.
Outside, we met some men making Arabic coffee for free. It was really nice and creamy! It was almost like an espresso shot. I definitely needed it to wake up! He was selling it for free because of the pilgrimage happening in Iraq at the moment.
Next, we drove to the Valley of Peace, which is the biggest cemetery in the world. I’d never seen so many tombs in my life, but it looked like it must have been thousands, maybe even more!
We pulled into a parking garage over the cemetery, where we got a nice view over the cemetery. Then, we drove deeper inside. I could see graves of different heights and sizes, as well as empty plots reserved for families. Some graves had flowers or Korans places atop them.
It’s a sad place, but also quite beautiful! It was a nice way to end our morning in Najaf.

A very good morning to you David wherever you are right now (on your way to Saudi Arabia). First of all, the people of Iraq: beautiful, kind, welcoming and generous. Ladies: how about those handsome young men; very easy on the eyes 🤗. As per the food, the ash and hareesa, I have never seen anything like that. The breakfast though looked delicious. See, breakfast doesn't have to be eggs, bacon, sausages, pancakes and toast. It can be anything to break the fast. Try something new. I love how Jafar watches David doing his own thing with the way he mixes up everything and then shows him the right way. Jafar seems to be a traditionalist and such a nice young man too. Nice to see Tasos as well. And yes, the restaurant was so clean and tidy. Now when it comes to the cemetery, what can I say: I would call it the 'city of the deceased', no offense to the Iraqis. It looks like an above ground burial site and it is so vast. Wow!!! I am so happy to see this series continued. So David, wherever you are at this moment, I hope you are safe and that you are well looked after. May God continue to watch over you and bless you and all those around you. 🙏🕊️👼🇹🇹🇨🇦

Iraq has a lot of things, but you can go to the state of Michigan to try Iraqi food. Iraqi history can only be experienced in museums in Washington or New York, or come to Iraq to look at it closely. He also knows the Iraqis for their generosity in all the difficult circumstances that Iraq is going through, until it did not change the impression, and in all these difficult circumstances, people smile, and this is from the great nature of people.

In an Islamic religious visit of the more moderate Shiite sect, it is called the visit of the forty, and this visit comes to all people from all monotheistic religions, where great personalities and ambassadors of countries come. And in the extreme heat, people do not care, as there are millions of camps set up on the road, and these camps prepare Iraqi food of all kinds, and all of this is free. Rather, it forces you to eat, and here we are talking about the generosity of the Iraqi people. Thanks to all the good people in the USA

David I enjoy this video very much but I have to say something I have become very attached to Tasos. In my eyes he is adorable beyond compare and I love the way you both bond together it is very heartwarming. And I like the fact that he has a mind of his own when it comes to liking or just liking food that you might say I'll try this you might like it whatever and he will eat it or then he will give his opinion and say I heard him say already I don't like that you know that's good that's good. And while I have you here I want to wish you and yours a very Happy New Year Tasos. May the New Year bring us all some peace of mind and peace of soul. I've had a very very tough year health-wise really some scary moments but I'm well well as I could be so I'm looking forward to a new year. I want you to have all the peace and contentment and goodness and not looking forward to all kinds of new videos maybe with different places so David much peace to you and yours.☮️🇺🇸🥢🙏🍜
