Just a quick note! I did not research the song before hand BUT at the premiere of this video I was informed by subscribers of what it is about and I had a strong feeling it was very meaningful but didn’t 100% know the context at the time. I do have some pre-recorded songs but I will edit them slightly to reflect what’s going on IF my video and sayings are different. Thank you ❤
"so much depth" you said it, the deepest, the only other band that is a far distant 2nd is Queensryche, NW reigns supreme, lyrically, composition, musicianship & vocally there is no one that can compare to Floor, NW is the ultimate Live performance
And you certainly don't have to research any song. The gatekeepers will insist you know every detail of particular tracks in advance. Enjoy music the way you want to.
I found the words to all of the Nightwish songs. This is my favourite of them all- even though it brings me to sobbing tears every time I listen to it. it's for my son, who I lost in 1996. Thank you again for reacting...cheers from an Aussie grandma.
A description of the masterpiece of a song to help you understand what its all about . The Poet and the Pendulum was written by Tuomas (Keyboards) after firing Tarja Turnunen the original singer in 2005 She was the face of Nightwish at the time, and Tuomas (Keyboards) wrote this and considered her a muse to many of the songs he had written at that point. They had also grown up in the same city and knew each other since early childhood. Some say Tuomas was in love with her but only Tuomas knows that for sure . All the band members decided together to fire her for acting too much of a diva And her husband & Manager was stepping way outta bounds concerning the band business He always wanted more money , only big paying shows . Tuomas was painted as the devil by many fans, Press and even politicians. He went through a deep depression. He even considered ending the band . He wrote The Poet and the Pendulum at that time, and actually kills himself in the song,at the 7:00 time stamp the song says "I have but 3 min " then at the 10:00 time stamp he killed himself in the song as to kill the pain he was going through . To this day every time he plays it, it takes him back to those feelings, and shows on his face. They no longer play this song . In the last part, Mother and Father, words are said to him that his real mother & Father said to him at that time of his deep depression. One part that touches me at the end when the guitarist Emppu and bassist Marko, the only other two involved with firing Tarja (that were still active with the band at the time of this show )were standing with Tuomas at the end in solidarity and love., NOTE : the 1st two words are (The End) and the last two words are (The Beginning) representing the end of the 1st era of Nightwish and the beginning of the next era
Thanks for this comment, it’s stop on to what I needed to see about this song! It’s really crazy to me that this song was written considering everything and I don’t blame them for not wanting to play it anymore, and it some ways it’s moving on from the past as it must hurt them in ways to play it. Again, thanks for this comment ❤️
"Some say Tuomas was in love with her but only Tuomas knows that for sure" There is no evidence that Tuomas was in love with Tarja. The most likely reason for this rumor is that Tuomas mentioned Tarja's husband Marcelo in his open letter in a very negative context, but forgot to add that he was her manager and she made him her authorized representative in the band. So many fans mistakenly decided that it was a kind of "love triangle" and jealousy. It was only later, when the official biographical book about Nightwish was released, and those fans who read it learned about serious business conflicts between Marcelo and the band members (and their management), which led to Tarja's dismissal.
Hello Jess. The song "The Poet and the Pendulum" is a 13 Minute journey through the mind and turmoil of Tuomas Holopainen after the year 2005. It was in that year the band parted with their long-time singer Tarja Turunen and had a personal falling out with her. The pain of the separation was big on both sides, and shown in this song. There is the responsibility that the band and Holopainen had to show towards the fans,. It was the End of an Era for them, and reason for Holopainen being lost as described in these lyrics. We can only of course to a certain degree suppose how much of these are truly Holopainen's feelings, wishes and pains - but we do know that the lyrics of Nightwish have been up to then very personal. Other songs on the album also digest this separation and falling out of the members with Turunen. This is one of the interpretations and i know lots of fans do not agree, they just need to read the open letter that was given to Tarja by the whole band at her last concert with Nightwish, where they fired her. And the main reason that Tuomas went through a depression was that specially the Tarja fans where furious and showed that in the media and everyone was blaming Tuomas. (the fans spit on his grave). He felt the whole world was against him. However personal and "real" these thoughts are, I feel like this song definitely takes us not only on a journey with Holopainen but also into ourselves. The music underlines the emotional gravity of the song extremely well. And I believe a lot of people can actually relate to a sense of guilt and being overwhelmed that all they desired for is the safety of home and innocence. While being personal, the song can still ring true to it's listener. That's a quality Nighwish possesses in many, many more songs. The emotional journey is one we can all share and very few bands know how to put that journey into song and especially into sound as well as Nightwish does. The band remains through all it's shores and Oceans, one of my main favourites and I hold special place for the band in my musical heart. I hope you have enjoyed reading my analysis and share some of my thoughts. If you do have any comments, please feel free to let me know. And remember the beauty of interpretation is that it is subjective; we can see all and feel different things in the same song and continue to love it endlessly. Great reaction, Jess. ❤ The first time I heard this song I also did no research. Afterwards I did. I was at Wembley for this concert, even though I thought I was prepared this performance left me a blubbering heap (I was only 63 years old at the time, just a young lad ). You don't listen to this, you experience it as Nightwish takes you on an emotional rollercoaster of a journey. One of my favourites. Keep up the good work, Jess, and thanks for the reaction. 🥰
I love this reaction. Without knowing the backstory of this song, it already hits you hard. That is what good music does. You show it perfectely. I can hear you are English and this song was performed (and recorded) at Wembley. When I got to know the backstory of this song it hitted me even harder than before. It is a masterpiece. Wembley is the only recorded concert with all the 3 "big ones" (Ghost Love Score, The Poet and the Pendulum and The Greatest Show on Earth) in the setlist. This concert is even more special, because of Floors vocals in Yours is an Empty Hope (listen carefully) and a very special guest at the end of The Greatest Show on Earth. Greetings from the Netherlands.
I like it that you listened to this unbiased. The history leading to this emotional song is important, and you will probably learn a lot about it by all comments. But your reaction shows that all the depth and emotion is also felt without knowing the back story, hitting you 'like a ton of bricks'. Nice one, looking forward to your next Nightwish reaction!
if you haven't researched what the background on this song is, you should then listen & watch again. Changes what you think of the lyrics and background videos.
Hey there. Thanks for the reaction to my favourite song of all time. The back story for this is soooooo deep. Anyway... I hope you enjoy them so far.hope to see you again.
Thank you for your reaction.🙂👍 World is full of awesome music, to me NW is one of those greats... but there is also lots of music by othred bands so Greetings from Finland! (by NW fan since 1998)
Hey JuliettJess, thank you for your reactions on Nightwish. A simple English saying: The more, the marrier. That's totally applying to the Nightwish Army. And this Army is growing. Day by day, week by week, month by month. We are all about the awesomeness of Nightwish. You know by now, Nightwish doesn't do songs. They do the whole package. That's what makes Nightwish outstanding. Greetings from the Netherlands 🇳🇱 🤘🫡
Masterpiece! Guy Elliott was the boy soprano at the start. He was from St Mary's Choir School, Reigate. Even without knowing the reasons this was written, it is undoubtedly a deep immersion in a persons' emotional state. So glad Tuomas did "it" this way rather than for real. (3 minutes after "3 minutes and counting...." ) WE need his music! Marko sang almost all of the demo of this song - darker, nastier, cruder, 4-letter words... it's on YT! I miss Marko with Nightwish but I'm glad he's doing what he has to.
missed the live reaction, :( but still glad you enjoyed it alot, :) until the next reaction, keep it up jess, nice one :D (hiding in your jacket, will not save you from the chills) so funny XD
Wow! I love a powerful singer!!! Someone did you a SOLID by recommending this! Having said that... PLEASE do Liliac!!! Their Dio covers are OUTSTANDING. In fact their covers are about the best I ever heard. When you hear them... you will know. P.S. avoid their metallica covers. Hatfield sings in more of a... burst. Melody (Liliac singer) EXCELLS in long, carrying notes. Then, enjoy their originals... and their live is quite good!
I kinda want to make a suggestion... they mostly do EPIC stories. But when they did a, "top 40" type song... it would seem out of character for them. But... maybe it was knowing the buried meaning of dolphins, to a mother, that is nonchalantly sung that brung the story of the song to the forefront, and why... it is, what it is. "Escapist" is in all of my favorite playlists. Floor both shines... and rocks, while hitting you subtlety in the heart.
The vocals are always a focus, but I think Nightwish's real success comes from Tuomas's amazing song writing. Bands need great vocals and instruments, but they also need good material to perform!
Emppu the guitarrist, together with the Tuomas the keybordist, was the founder of the band. Marko, the basist and singer, came later. Both Emppu and Marko were present when the band were present when the band dismissed the first singer, and, I think, got pretty good idea about the feelings of Tuomas. Kaj and Floor came much later.... So for the chat.
Tuomas bared his soul 😞 Now you should complete the trilogy from the album. Bye Bye Beautiful and Master Passion Greed. There is no music video of Master Passion Greed, but so worth doing. It shows how they felt at the time I always struggle to get past The Pacific without tearing up 😢😢
Tuomas wrote this song after the band had released an open letter explaining why they fired their 1st female vocalist, Tarja Turunen, which angered many of the fans. Consequently, this song tells of a poet who is killed by his own blade and taken to the “white lands of Empathica,” a reference to Heaven. The poet reflects on his life, wishing he could go back to his childhood home and the times before he betrayed his friends and wrote “1000 pages of erased text.” Through the song, he eventually finds peace, with both his friends and God forgiving him. The song speaks of the power of redemption and the need to forgive ourselves and others before it is too late. ❤from 🇫🇮.
Nice reaction thanks I think you would have a different reaction to the video if you new the back story, the talking parts at the beginning and middle was done by a young choir person and when the part said 3 minutes left exactly 3 minutes later the guillotine fell
Hi u ok im steve uk huge nightwish fan got all cds dvds rareities .yes a great band great music always .can u please react to devilskin sweet release . Devilskin are a rockband from new zealand with the amazing jennie skulander on vocals .the songs bout the suicide of her best friend .its a slower song tho.hope u ok keep up great reactions .hope to see you react to that soon all the best
Tuomas had a hard time playing this song live. I've read he had the vocals cut from his feed to avoid the possibility of having it hit too hard on stage. When you see Emmpu go over to chat early on, his checking to see if Tuomas is OK. Hard to find the words to describe this song other then masterpiece.
