Yeah, you beat me to it, lol. And one-upped me with a name, I wasn't sure who he was.
But yeah, pre-pubescent boys have a very unique vocal range that is hard for adults (men or women) to operate within. Not impossible, but very difficult. This has evolved into it's own singing style, and is why there are so many boy's choirs. More than a few metal vocalists got their start in choirs that were focused on a very similar style.

Apart from a few exceptions, Tuomas is the sole composition and lyrical genius behind Nightwish songs. This one is especially personal to him given he literally names himself as the poet reference in the title.

    • @athlonen

Tuomas uses a lot of different references to himself. He uses "the Dead Boy", "the Poet", or "The Beast" in reference to himself The Dead Boy was used in - obviously - Dead Boy's Poem, and Romanticide; The Poet here, obviously, and the Beast in the Beauty of the Beast.

He used a lot of references of him being suicidal, depressed and more in countless double/triple on tundra in a lot of texts throughout the decades...oh and yes, he didn't only write songs, since he's a poet.
Poetry nowadays is a dead art: it's used mostly to fuel other arts, like music, comedy, cinema, etc. But once, it was its own art...some are still clinging to this practice. Tuomas did for a while, before even playing publicly the keyboard. (and mixing xD)

Guy originally also sang Part III (The Pacific.) When Floor stepped in, she told Tuomas she could sing both part I (White Lands Of Empathica) and Part III (The Pacific) herself, so they could drop the backing track of Guy. Tuomas was happy for Floor to sing Part III, but insisted Part I would be sung by the boy soprano, because of the symbolism of childhood innocence that is important to Tuomas.

Tuomas has said. The way it works in NIGHTWISH is that I am very much a solo worker. So I try to make all the songs - even the arrangements - as ready as possible, as much as I feel that I have to give to the songs. Most of the riffs, even some drum fills and stuff like this. I just try to make it as good as I can do it by myself. And then I introduce the songs and demos that I've done on my own to the other members of the band, and then we start the rearranging process. You know, 'Could you come up with a better riff for this one?' 'Would the bass line be different in that one?' 'What about if the vocal line is like this?' And sometimes the songs change a lot

IMO, the only thing above this masterpiece is "The Greatest Show on Earth" at Tampere.
If I was wanting to introduce someone to Nightwish, I would go with "Storytime" at Wacken 2013. It's Nightwishy, but very accessible, with a broad appeal. And, of course, it's an incredible performance. I would save the more epic stuff for later.

Considering that TGSOE is above all others of recent music history, my long lifetime being my yardstick, I completely agree. This is truly a masterpiece. And as far as listening, this should be prepared for, because of it's depth and underlying storyline. One does not just roll this out to introduce somebody to Nightwish.

@@lazyhominid I completely agree. Ghost Love Score shows off Floor in her multi-talented best. It displays her versatility and charisma as front-woman and crescendos with "the note!" It is an epic production and composition that also showcases Tuomas Holopainen as the musical genius of our generation. Even people with a pop leaning, which is why Storytime is suggested, can see the brilliance of Ghost Love Score, and it doesn't hurt that every single reactor holds their arm up to display their goosebumps. "Greatest Show" and "Poet & Pendulum" are magnum opus's, but you need to grow into them. The American Music Industry has not prepared their audience for such genius, as they have absolutely nobody capable of creating that level of sophistication. "Ghost Love Score" stretches an American listener, but not to the point of breaking.

Thank you Veterans on this day world wide, you served when others ran away and refused. We pay that price everyday for our service and most would do it again if our nation called on us. I have rediscovered my love of good quality music with Nightwish. In fact I would go as far as to say, they have changed my life, giving me music and lyrics for my life and beliefs. Lily Jane, you just have to watch The Greatest show on Earth. I'm not ashamed to admit, I cried when I saw the song live. A truly staggering band for every reason....Music, Lyrics, the show, their beliefs,......... maybe watch the version at Tampere with the Lyrics, but the full meaning, from the heart comes with Richard Dawkins at Wembley in London. Whichever you watch (and i'm kinda guessing you probably already have by now), the trilogy from Nightwish, Poet and the Pendulum, Ghost Love Score and The Greatest Show on Earth are probably the greatest 3 music scores I have ever heard.

The Poet and the Pendulum was written after firing Tarja the original singer. She was the face of Nightwish at the time, and Tuomas (Keyboards) wrote this and considered her a muse to many of the songs he had written at that point. They had also grown up in the same city and knew each other since early childhood. All the band members decided together to fire her for acting too much of a diva And her husband & Manager was stepping way outta bounds concerning the band business He always wanted more money , only big paying show but the band did it for the love of music and there fans . According to all the band members, Tarja was missing lots of rehearsals and would not even travel with the band anymore. Tuomas was painted as the devil by many fans, and went through a deep depression. He even considered ending the band . He wrote The Poet and the Pendulum at that time, and actually kills himself in the song. He said he killed himself in the song at the 10:00 time stamp , as to kill the pain he was going through . To this day every time he plays it, it takes him back to those feelings, and shows on his face. In the last part, Mother and Father, words are said to him that his real mother said to him at that time of his deep depression. One part that touches me at the end when the guitarist Emppu and bassist Marko, the only other two involved with firing Tarja (that were still active with the band at the time of this show )were standing with Tuomas at the end in solidarity and love., NOTE : the 1st two words are (The End) and the last two words are (The Beginning) representing the end of the 1st era of Nightwish and the beginning of the next era

This track was originally recorded w/ vocalist Anette Olzen for the 'Dark passion play' (2007) album after original singer Tarja Turunen was fired in 2005... The intro was recorded w/ Anette (but I could be mistaken... they did use a choir for the album) - she was not an operatic singer, but she has a beautiful voice for sure... Floor only sang the lyrics live - the orchestral parts & spoken words had to be sampled, but she sang it more operatically than Anette.
Nightwish is Tuomas Holopainen's band... the keyboardist is the main composer and lyricist. The others have contributed musically... for example: Marco (bass) contributed 'The Islander' to 'Dark Passion Play'... and Emppu (guitar) contributed 'Whoever brings the night'... but Tuomas writes the lyrics and works w/ the band's singers on parts and arrangements. He brought Marco (bass) into Nightwish in 2001 because he wanted a male vocalist on the next album that became 'Century Child' in 2002.
After Tarja was fired, Tuomas was depressed and spent over a year working on the album without a female singer... By 2007, Tuomas felt that Nightwish was ready to audition singers and picked Anette Olzen because he wanted (at the time) to step away from the operatic vocals... Anette had a softer voice and seemed like the right choice to bring the new songs to life... and he was right for a while.
Unfortunately, a faction of Nightwish fans did not like what Anette brought to the band... but the first album w/ Anette became the biggest-selling Nightwish album of their career.
My mind was blown when I put on the Nightwish album 'Wishmaster'... the first song 'She is my sin' 🔥🔥🤘🤘I'd never heard anything like it back in 2001.

Gethsemane. It blew me away when I first heard this song from the very beginning of their career. It's something you do five albums in, not as teenagers.

Tuomas creates and composes 85+% of all Nightwish songs and albums. He also works with the symphonies and choirs to create any of the backing tracks needed. That's why you may have heard us refer to him as the Metal Mozart.

Nightwish is to classical as to what Kenny G. is to jazz. Eddie Van Halen was far closer to mozart then nightwish.

This is a beautiful piece of art that was written by a man whilst plummeting into the bottomless abyss of depression and despair.
The listener is given a glimpse into Tuomas’s very soul and I can’t think of any songwriter that has written a song that is more naked and raw. He’s really managed to drench the lyrics with his intense emotions during this dark time in his life.
The arrangement of this song is otherworldly. Just the fact that he has managed to line up the song so that it’s exactly three minutes from “I only have three minutes and counting” to the point where he “cuts” his head off is mind blowing.
The last part is also amazingly beautiful. It’s basically a compilation of things that his parents said to him as they tried to comfort him.
I myself has battled severe depression and my parents said similar things to me, so that part is especially emotional for me.
As for your question I would say Ghost Love Score is fhe song that I would present to a first time listener. It really is THE best song they ever made and that is why it is the only song that never will be left out from their setlist.

There's a version of this song where it's just Marko on vocals that's worth checking out.
The album Dark Passion Play, all of the songs were written before Nightwish found a vocalist to replace Tarja, and they recorded the demos with Marko singing the songs. It's the only Nightwish album where it was written with no particular vocalist in mind.

    Hello Lilly.
The song "The Poet and the Pendulum" is a 13 Minute journey through the mind and turmoil of Tuomas Holopainen after the year 2005. It was in that year the band parted with their long-time singer Tarja Turunen and had a personal falling out with her. The pain of the separation was big on both sides, and shown in this song. There is the responsibility that the band and Holopainen had to show towards the fans,. It was the End of an Era for them, and reason for Holopainen being lost as described in these lyrics. We can only of course to a certain degree suppose how much of these are truly Holopainen's feelings, wishes and pains - but we do know that the lyrics of Nightwish have been up to then very personal. Other songs on the album also digest this separation and falling out of the members with Turunen.
This is one of the interpretations and i know lots of fans do not agree, they just need to read the open letter that was given to Tarja by the whole band at her last concert with Nightwish, where they fired her. And the main reason that Tuomas went through a depression was that specially the Tarja fans where furious and showed that in the media and everyone was blaming Tuomas. (the fans spit on his grave). He felt the whole world was against him.
However personal and "real" these thoughts are, I feel like this song definitely takes us not only on a journey with Holopainen but also into ourselves. The music underlines the emotional gravity of the song extremely well. And I believe a lot of people can actually relate to a sense of guilt and being overwhelmed that all they desired for is the safety of home and innocence. While being personal, the song can still ring true to it's listener. That's a quality Nighwish possesses in many, many more songs. The emotional journey is one we can all share and very few bands know how to put that journey into song and especially into sound as well as Nightwish does.
The band remains through all it's shores and Oceans, one of my main favourites and I hold special place for the band in my musical heart. I hope you have enjoyed reading my analysis and share some of my thoughts. If you do have any comments, please feel free to let me know. And remember the beauty of interpretation is that it is subjective; we can see all and feel different things in the same song and continue to love it endlessly.

This performance Lilly Jane of this masterpiece was my introduction to Nightwish and Floor around 2 years ago after a good friend kept pestering me to listen to Nightwish. I eventually relented and was blown away and have been ever since by this phenomenal band. Toumas at 13:52 gets me every time as does Floor, always. Thank you. 🙏😊👍❤️

This is the story of Tuomas's depression after the sacking of Tarja the first singer and the vitriol he received from many fans and how he managed to cope by writing this and other songs. With subtitles it is broken down into the various sections and obviously the lyrics.

Great reaction to an incredible piece of music. 👍🤟 Tuomas is a genius! To open his soul like this takes guts and conviction. I’m sure others in the comments have given you the story about this song. Calling this just a “song” though doesn’t do it justice.

Hi Lilly Jane and welcome to the Nightwish army ;) When the group was created in early 1990, the singer, Tarja Turunen, was really into symphonic lyric singing. Then, when Tarja left in 2007, she was succeeded by Anette Olzon with a more Celtic, romantic, less lyrical range. In 2012, Anette left the group. It was during Wacken 2013 that Floor Janssens officially became the singer of the group. Floor has the particularity of having a song and a power that comes from metal (her husband is the drummer of the group Sabaton) and a lyrical culture. This is just my opinion, but Floor is without a doubt THE singer Nightwish needed to give Tuamas all its creative potential ;) Hello from France ;)

Love how you really get this band LJ👍 Another awesome reaction🤘🤘
The brilliance, nuance and mastery of Tuomas’ songwriting lyrics and composition never ceases to amaze me. 3 minutes exactly from where he says “I have 3 minutes and counting “ is when he simulates with his hand the pendulum cutting his throat. Amazing!🤘🤘

Tuomas wrote this song as a metaphorical suicide or he was going to do it in real life. It stemmed from firing his friend and former lead, Tarja. The line “I cannot cry because the shoulder cries more” was the entire band was feeling that loss and that lead to a very dark point for him. Where the boy says “I have but 3 minutes in counting” is significant as you can hear the pendulum winding up and three minutes later the suicide takes place. I’ve seen them many times in concert but I’ve only ever seen them perform this song once live.
