yes, you can go out and buy a Honda fit for 10 grand, and yes, you can probably put a cage, two seats and all the other safety stuff in it for another 8... but this is where this "budget racing" thing goes a bit wrong. because youre looking easily at another 5 grand for a half decent set of gravel suspension, and a set of tyres (you'll want at least 2 sets) is about another grand a piece, plus youre going to need spares for the brakes and various other suspension components, easily another grand. Then theres getting it registered (oh yes, these things have to be street legal AND insured, and insurance for a racecar is not cheap). then youll need a tow rig, because even though it is street legal, youre insurance wont allow for it to be driven long distances to and from events, so youll need a truck and trailer. then theres the gear: helmet $500-1000, racing suit 500-1000, the hans device he has to wear around his neck is a minimum of 1000 dollars and it is mandatory. Going racing for 18 grand is all very well and good in theory, but youre actually looking probably a minimum of 30000 just to get the car ready and to one event, after that the costs die down, but it still isn't cheap. entry fees are expensive, and then theres getting the racing license, the school for which can cost 3 grand. so if you want to do a season of racing, your first year youre probably looking at $35-40000. not really budget racing when you actually look at all the costs.

You can't use the same budget car for both events? What makes you say it is cheaper, I actually like the idea of circuit racing better than timed distance
this seems truly and genuinely fun 😊 if I ever get to rally, i'll be just cruising through the track the first time while my co-driver yelling at me to go faster 🤣
I guess he doesn't use Craigslist's. Alot of times you can find people who don't really rally or do any serious track racing instead most of the time they just sit and meet in empty parking lots. But you can find them selling older wrx's, 2.5rs, vw's, volvo 240's, and some audi's that already have a cage, seats, belts, and more but never really but them into use. For around 5-8k sometimes even cheaper. Will they pass inspection? Who knows. lol
Watch the top gear version of this 'top gear budget rally'. They spend around 3,4 thousand pound ( around 5000 dollars), that's with all modifications making it rally legal. They take them down to a local track and have a great time against other budget cars. Seems much more appealing than spending 15000$ on this pile of Honda.
Imho the point of this video was it doesnt realy matter which car u have as long as u drive it properly - u wouldnt expect honda fitt or how is it called (in EU its jazz) to win a rally class lol
I found a 2008 Hyundai accent with 94k miles for 1,800. Might be an interesting car to do this with. Slow enough to keep me out of trouble but good to learn.
Who? Is there a link to a story or something? I'm new to rally and would love to learn and start saving in case I'll want to try :) me and my cousin have always been sportsbike guys but since I got my Miata, and started modding it, we are approaching local competitions(as attenders) and rally costs are high...reading something about this $500 third place story would be awesome :)
Pretty much called is bullshit as soon as he showed a Honda Fit for 10g's... Of all the competitive cars in the price range, that's literally the worst...
Cars I'd recommend: BMW E30 325i Mazda speed 3 (any generation) Any subaru WRX or a 1st gen legacy turbo An old AWD audi or really any FWD car that's under 1400 kilos (3000-ish lbs.)
Rwd slides a lot on dirt. For fast times, that's bad. FWD pulls out of slides on dirt better than RWD but if you just want to have fun and you don't care about time then yes, rwd is a good option.
actually thats just half of the story... FWD is easier to drive i give you that, but in bad conditions like rain and mud if you accelerate hard in a FWD car you'll lose alot of grip because of weight transition
Dat Person Doe. then a Toyota Yaris/Aygo is perfect, 2,400lbs, 104hp and FWD, in fact it could be a unnoticed beast because I haven't seen many people use them in rally even though you can find them for $3000 or less.
If you truly wanted to go rallying and cant afford it in your current lifestyle you don't truly want to go rallying. Sell it all and live in your parents shed next to your rally car; this is the dream.
All in all, rally isnt something you do. It is something you commit to. For example ive been involved in motorsport all my life and now i'm 13 and building my first rally car with my dad. You cant watch a video like this and go "I'll do this next weekend' you have to spend you life doing it.
Rallying is the best motorsport, what makes it so fun is that it is not only about speed but also survival and it is very easy to get a cheap rally car.
Few mistakes but overall great video, really gives me a look into what should I expect, Im even more excited now. One thing tho, you can get into rally racing for a lot and I mean A LOT cheaper than 18k. You can pick up some car for 1 grand and rally it with no problem, just find a rally where there is no requirement about having a roll cage and you can participate for 1k + entry fee
Ofc having a skid plate under the engine to protect oil pain and transmission from rocks and stuff, rip out the interior, buy some aftermarket steering wheel and muffler delete will give you more of a rally feel, but those are extras
Ofc having a skid plate under the engine to protect oil pain and transmission from rocks and stuff, rip out the interior, buy some aftermarket steering wheel and muffler delete will give you more of a rally feel, but those are extras
1. There’s no such thing as rally without a roll cage 2. There’s also no such thing as buying a rallycar for 1k and just going and driving it with no issues. If you get a rallycar for 1k, be prepared to spend hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars to get it remotely stage worthy 3. Motorsports are inherently expensive. If you’re looking for cheap, rally is not the sport for you. I would recommend curling or badminton
@@RallyKJ Overall you are 100% right, and I agree with you, but at least here (Australia) there are S1 rally sprints, which are the really base level events. They are set up so you can't reach that high speeds, and you can just use your road car in them; all you need is a helmet. I would imagine most other countries would have similar events.
Ken Block lol. Also 20k is not a small budget. Thats literally a deposit for a house. Pretty sure you can just pay for a day out in a rally type car on a track for a couple of thousand. Good vid though. Thanks for uploading.

Get rally seat's and 4point seatbelt (With more budget) 7.rollgage 8.more power 9.better light's 10.loud ass fucking exhaust
Did you watch the video or listen to the commentary? It was their team mates who were stuck, they waved them on (clearly seen in the video). They waited for sweep, took over an hour to get pulled out (clearly heard in the video). I was at this rally, and drove down that stage the day after in a 4wd SUV with AT tires. There was still a bunch of standing water on the road, with deep mucky ditches in many sections. There was no way the Fit was pulling that car out...
well at that point they were in the lead and heading for a victory. Would be stupid to give ANYONE a tow then. They were lucky to have gotten a tow when needed.
He said "YOU" can buy a used Fit and "You" can have the safety equipments installed. It didn't mean "HE" did. As the lady announcer said at the end "honda racing" there was a lot more money put in that car, plus all other expenses for that event. At bare minimum, it would cost about $30-40k
Good concept but I’d recommend finding an older Subaru for a lot less and modifying that. You’ll save money if done right and have great awd. Not to mention they’re easy to work on
Take the turn early and use a hydro break to get that lean you need, after your where you want dump the clutch to get maximum power to the wheels so you dont slide off the road
in a front wheel drive platform on a loose surface you should be turning in and applying foot brake over gas, never disengage the engine and there is no need for a handbrake
Im sure hes a good driver but winning first place in a stock honda fit? that doesnt speak well of the competition, shoot the civic si shouldve been destroying them until it got stuck.
They should have included a interview with FY racing. I live in houghton MI and FY racing is a local rally team, there a privateer rally team that was very competitive with Travis, Dave and Ken block on factory rally teams.
@@crazycupckake4676 I don't know if you didnt undertand my previous comment or you're trolling, but, for someone who is in vacations or in the weekend and want to have some fun, it doesnt matter if its rallycross, rally, or any of the possible rally derivatives such as regularity rally, speed rally, etc. Its a weekend/vacation fun, with some spare money. I've done both in the past, and they are the same thing, the difference is only in the investment for starting it. I've had easier times doing like top gear did, and after having some fun and then when i had to comeback to work, i sold the car to another guy wich wanted to do the same thing, and actually got $200 more than i invested. With this one, i had to get a more recent car, and even selling it in the end, i lost some money. But for fun purpouses, its the same thing. No offense but those Honda fits are horrible They aren't fast (especially the originals) There's hardly any aftermarket parts And they aren't even that reliable

It's pretty simple see. The big companies can work off of the fact that since they have money, they can use it to make more money. Sure you can weld your own roll cage, piping, chassis, and all that, but who did it? Not a big company that will pay you to advertise their gear. The sheer amount of money you could get if your name was Ken Block and you spent 20,000 grand on a top of the line, trademarked roll cage outweighs the purchase price. Imagine the advertising revenue when you post their logo among the countless others you'll have on you're rally car. Oh you'll be making well over 500k. The 100k goes to the car, the other 400k is an investment. Also, another big thing about the automotive industry. Don't get me wrong, I am very much impressed by your build (and I love Imprezas), but not everyone knows that building a rally car is a very achievable goal. If it was, who would be sitting at home watching Ken Block do it? No, instead the industry is going to put on big price tags that say "you can't afford this" so people won't attempt it. Frankly, you can see this same business pattern in a lot of things you can build; like PC's and firearms. The demand will switch from the product itself to the parts that make it. Thankfully, we are at a happy medium where parts are cheap, but not so cheap that they aren't produced at all or are ridiculously expensive, (hint: airsoft).
everyone who has tried to rally knows how expensive it gets even when on a budget just safety costs big bucks, try SCCA rally cross first then other club style racing and learn and plan.... get your feet wet, have fun on a lower level of competition before you attempt to spend that kinda cash to race..... he forgot to mention he needed a truck and trailer just to get that car to the race and home after... good luck everyone thanks for the video yahoo...

this seems truly and genuinely fun 😊 if I ever get to rally, i'll be just cruising through the track the first time while my co-driver yelling at me to go faster 🤣
nah co driver are cool af
Stay with CoD Indian Kid.
this is the reason why i'd spend hours watching rally in FIT rather than those street drag race. this is too damn fun.
Keep in mind they were doing (European) Rallycross not Stage Rally.
Rallycross and stage rally are completely different disciplines
"welding the differential"
points the camera at the back axle, which has never even seen a differential
lol, for not a lot of money...spent 8k on the car alone. a lot money for most people.
why? thats way to much dawg.
you don't need this type of car any car will work as long as it has the good motor and 5 speed
Your not throwing a ball around, you're racing cars. It has got to cost something.
Yes, it will cost something, but 8k for a mere Honda Jazz is a lot considering you could just get a Nissan 350Z for the same or less.
I will agree that a Z33 would be a terrible rally car, but, the point was value for money, not just what would be viable.
I can personally confirm that the Honda fit sport is absolutely rally ready
Y did you spend 8g on a 2wd car? Any old subaru will blow that crap out of water
That would put him in a different class if I'm not mistaken
AWD cars are in a different class, You should read the rule book on homologation classes . Driving skill is the key here, its not just about budget.
you can find a running 90s civic for like 800 and strip it out instead
Imho the point of this video was it doesnt realy matter which car u have as long as u drive it properly - u wouldnt expect honda fitt or how is it called (in EU its jazz) to win a rally class lol
get yourself a 3k 1st gen subaru impreza type r cuz that thing is a beast even without tuning :D
My son and I privateered a Group 5 rally car. No greater experience than being his co-driver. BTW, on the cheap, you're probably your own mechanics.
"If you're anything like me, you've dreamed of being a walking Monster Energy sponsor."
No.
Rallying in a Honda Fit is everything I could ever want out of life... I'm so jealous rn...
The Honda Fit/Jazz is a BEAST dressed as a beagle.
Michael de Guzman iiii
Just found this video, was our first LSPR to spectate in 2014 and that first day was miserable...hasn't stopped me from going back every year.
I found a 2008 Hyundai accent with 94k miles for 1,800. Might be an interesting car to do this with. Slow enough to keep me out of trouble but good to learn.
Rally cars, beautiful fall colors, throw in a great cup of coffee and you have the making of an awesome day
And there is some guy who joined a rally with a $500 car...jeez.... 😕
And he got third place it was also a world championship
Yeah, you can get competitive car for much cheaper than the one in the vid.

Thanks man!
Cheap used FWD is the best for rallying. Whether it be 110hp or 190hp when you’re on a budget, you make due with what you have.
absolutely ridicolous and misleading information in here
Yeah, new it was garbage as soon as they showed Yahoo in the first 10 seconds.
D R imagine if it were someone like buzzfeed instead it would be horrifying
Pretty much called is bullshit as soon as he showed a Honda Fit for 10g's... Of all the competitive cars in the price range, that's literally the worst...
Cars I'd recommend:
BMW E30 325i
Mazda speed 3 (any generation)
Any subaru WRX or a 1st gen legacy turbo
An old AWD audi
or really any FWD car that's under 1400 kilos (3000-ish lbs.)
why FWD? Just curious. At first thought my instinct is to go with RWD.
Skunkdog Gro
Ford Fiesta, and Opel Adam are also quite good. So good that they're both made into R2 Rally cars.
Hell yeah you can get excitement out of 117 horswpower! The iconic ae86 only has 112 and its been shown what that can do
Nice, love seeing the Honda Fit alive and kicking! Also I thought HPD was a recent thing... Apparently not.
they mist
*racing suits $100-$2000
*rally helmet $200-$5000
*fire extinguisher $40-$100
*rally seats $400-$4000
*car trailer $4000-$10000
LoL, hans-free...
do u mean missed?
yep
lol
Going to my first rally tonight :-D night time winter rally
so, how it is?
How did it go good sir?
Are you still alive?
He died
lmao
A Peugeot 205 or 206 GTI will get you mad places, my dad did 12 car rallies in one, amazing car
Oversteer in a front wheel drive.... makes me miss my corsa.
haha
i guess she ended in a ditch
It was understeer
"Alright go"
That cracked me up. What a brilliant video too, all good fun.
1. There’s no such thing as rally without a roll cage
2. There’s also no such thing as buying a rallycar for 1k and just going and driving it with no issues. If you get a rallycar for 1k, be prepared to spend hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars to get it remotely stage worthy
@@Sussex192 oh yeah we have those in America too. That’s what we call rallycross. Completely different than rally tho
man i love how emotional i get at the end of the video,is this a taste of passion?
How do you sign up for these rally events?
those are the real questions
holy shit chase, how far you've come!
ryan sanders 😂 that was the start of me spending all my money on racing
With that comeback if I was an opponent I'd be thinking "did they swap drivers?"
Ken Block lol. Also 20k is not a small budget. Thats literally a deposit for a house. Pretty sure you can just pay for a day out in a rally type car on a track for a couple of thousand. Good vid though. Thanks for uploading.
i own a Brazilian Chevy Chevette, thats basically an Opel Kadett C, and im itching to turn it into a Rally car! this video acctually helped a lot
lmao, get a cheap fwd car for like 1k, put 2k into parts. Good tires, good suspension, and boom, that's all you need to learn the basics.
You need turbo Weight reduction forged Pistons, etc etc
GuilleL51 [GD] you NEED turbo, forged pistons, weight reduction,is it in regulations or something ? You just need a car and a license to start racing for real
Boar Garage yeah ik but can you drift with a 70 hp fiesta? I mean i know its fun and cheap but with some cheap customizations you can have a nice car with more hp
GuilleL51 [GD] You can drift anything on wet gravel/dirt.
do you honestly think its hard to drift?
Love the BSA 2010 fire suit. The year I got my Eagle Scout and went to the Jamboree at Fort AP Hill.
0:39 is that McLovin?
I can't believe rally isn't more popular in the US. "Real roads, real fast", what could be more appealing in racing?
Why did he even mention a rear differential on a fwd car...
Get a junkyard car for some really cheap rallying 😁 (of course fixed a bit with some cheap mods) Just don't expect 1st place. You're there for the enjoyment 👍
Cut the hair, change the voice. BOOM. Danny Duncan, Rally edition.
While me i grew up driving on muddy dirt roads and gravel all the time. Im at home on the dirt. Its just so natural. Done 4x4 to fw and some rw. Its awesome to be speeding down not giving a flying shit. Just good fun. Never did an event.
0:38 So when did McLovin become a co-driver?
What need beginning rally driving in budget
1. Buy awd or rwd car
2.get short shifter or sequential shifter
3.upgrade your suspension brakes and tires
4.weld your differential or get locks
5.get rid of all extra wight
6. Get rally seat's and 4point seatbelt
(With more budget)
7.rollgage
8.more power
9.better light's
10.loud ass fucking exhaust
The mechanics and repairs are free? They probably cost more than the car.
All those Subarus... they look so good on the Rally course.
For $10k you could of got a pretty damn good awd Subaru
For the people who don't thin 8k is cheap, they are talking relative to standard wrc costs, which are atleast 100,000 minimum, talking generously

Top Gear's budget rallying was much better
Love your down right honest commentary,
Was he sponsored by the BSA or was he an eagle scout? Also why honda fit?
Nice to see another driver stop to pull you out.
at time 7:09 you did not stop to help your team mate yet someone help you when you were in a ditch in the dark
mgsboedmisodpc2 lol I don't think a 170 hp Honda Fit could pull a car out in semi deep water...
117**
well at that point they were in the lead and heading for a victory. Would be stupid to give ANYONE a tow then. They were lucky to have gotten a tow when needed.
aye126 its 117hp lol
He said "YOU" can buy a used Fit and "You" can have the safety equipments installed. It didn't mean "HE" did. As the lady announcer said at the end "honda racing" there was a lot more money put in that car, plus all other expenses for that event. At bare minimum, it would cost about $30-40k
Mit-chi-gan
Good concept but I’d recommend finding an older Subaru for a lot less and modifying that. You’ll save money if done right and have great awd. Not to mention they’re easy to work on
Good point. However Honda is bulletproof
10 Grand is ridculously huge sum of money ! you cant call that a budget !
The Voice of this man is Persuasive
He said "Mitch"igan 😁😁
Old TopGear could do that with a 1000 british pounds...
Rallycross and Rally are different things...
@@crazycupckake4676 Not to a person who just wants to have fun racing in dirt.
@@eduardoavila646 They're not the same thing eitherway
We are not talking in any way in a professional environment nor championship, wich isnt in the scope of the video anyway.
"wanted to savor the moment..."
"Alright, go"
lmfao
you could have got a subaru wrx for 8k easy a good one at that but that prob put you in a higher class
It would and is probably more dangerous for a first time rally racer
How old of a car are we talking here though? I live in michigan and i've seen 2005 WRX'S go for 10-15k all day long.
Definitely would like to try American dirt roads
Janne Paananen got plenty where I live!
LMAO his go to "rally driver" is someone who's never won a single WRC rally event (best finish 7th) and I'm not even sure if he ever won a single stage. But then anyone that calls a twenty something grand rally car cheap is quite obviously somewhat detached from reality.
My friend says that Forza Motorsport doesn't need rallying but he doesn't realize that rallying is a very good sport. (and it's also so dangerous) So Nitro if ur reading this, don't think rallying is stupid
Fit s? Lol no. Just get a subaru.
I'm pumped you won in a Fit. That's what's up!
Like ken block? hes over rated. 😂😂
I searched for this video to see what I would need and was surprised when the subject is the same car I’m trying to modify
Trust me, it's about 10 grand more expensive than they say. Be careful buddy
Go for it and enjoy life's way to boring and a tad bit short too
@@Curi0u50ne well he needs the money. It really is not as simple as they make it out to be i'm afraid. Totally agree with you but you need the resources
Or you can buy a WRX for under 10k instead of this piece of shit FWD Honda
Good luck racing in that rally class.
You want to buy your first rally car and race in a 4WD class race? HAHAHA! :DDD
I hope you like mud, because you will eat everyone's
The Fit isn't a POS. My mom drives a 2008 manual Fit and has put 160,000+ miles on it from brand new. It hasn't had any problems unrelated to service, AT ALL. Not to mention it has more room and is faster than my civic. Besides, the other commenters are right, GL racing in AWD class
The funny one
GL competing with cars way faster than a beginner can handle
You will crash
Congrats, victory on debut effort.
Dont buy a fit buy a old Mitsubishi or Subaru even some old toyotas are better choices
Unless you already have a honda fit with great snow tyres like i do
Back to watching rally crashes and wishing I had dirt rally while looking up honda fits on craigslist....
No offense but those Honda fits are horrible
They aren't fast (especially the originals)
There's hardly any aftermarket parts
And they aren't even that reliable
Thomas Knight it's a Honda, aftermarket parts are plenty when it has a multitude of swap options like K20 B18 B20 H22
Love seeing the UP get some spotlight.
A 500k Fiesta lol what a waste
It's anything but a Fiesta mate. Nothing is the same, not even the body.
+The Wanderer a build for 500k is a waste it could of been done for 100k never said it was a shit car my impreza is fully built pushing about the same hp with Bilstein suspension kit plus many more extras spent around 30k
Daniel Albrittain
So they spent 400k on drugs? Otherwise how did they waste so much money if 100k would have given them the same results?
+wolfmannn2008 maybe a little on drugs only way i see it costing 500k if they had it built for them i do all my work on my cars i have a lot of help because i work a great shop and i don't pay for a lot of expensive things like programming maps etc
