I love the original story of this bass line. Robert Smith wrote it, but when they were in the studio he saw a big upright bass and asked Phil Thornalley to play it. Phil had never played an upright bass so he had to pre-work out all the notes, and put masking tape on the neck to remember the positions. He claims he thought all the jazz musicians would think the walking bass line part was a bit hacky. :)
