Hi there Am primarily a phone photographer lol, but with that said, am thinking in getting my first camera to start taking photography more seriously. I really like this camera and i really like the tamron 35 to 150 f2.0 to f2.8. My main interest is landscape photography and wildlife photography, being an avid outdoorsman myself, spending time camping, canoeing or just hiking around is one of my favourite things to do. I know that as a beginner i should consider maybe something different, but in your opinion, do you think that will be a good camera and lens combination for someone like me or should I go for something more affordable and later on get something better. Happy New year my friend
I agree with most of the comments. You are extremely articulate and cover complicated technology very well. I have one issue. I wish you would have a couple of breaths in there. I can see that you have them naturally but you have edited them out. Just a couple of natural pauses in there would help.
As always, a good run thru from Ted without the breathless hype that's all too common these days. This looks like a very worthy successor to the 7-iii, and for someone needing a big jump up from a APS-C or 1st/2nd gen Sony, this looks solid. It's not "perfect" and doesn't have "everything" but don't forget that this level of Sony body isn't trying to do-it-all perfectly...it's trying to be an affordable balance between the top end cameras and pricepoint. That said, I won't be swapping my A7-iii for this because a new body isn't the barrier holding me back from creating more good photos or video.
I changed from Nikon to Sony and using currently the A7C and A6600. The A 7 IV ist meeting my expectations and I will buy as my cam for more heavy lenses next year.
Got mine yesterday, and it is a monster Still and Video Camera. The feature set is complete, but to get a complete understanding of the features of the camera, you will need to download the manual, and follow the PDF links in it. Over 2 days of ownership, has given me a great appreciation for a Hybrid pwoerhouse.
Awesome review. I love how you dive into the technical stuff. Overall it does look like a significant upgrade from the previous version. IMHO the a7iii is still more than enough for most people.
Why do you "presume" "most people" are dumbed down and can't recognize, appreciate, and purchase this fantastic upgrade. Shame on you for stating that!
Great video! I just found you thanks to the RUclips algorithm. I thought I recognized the W 7th bridge in one of the pictures 😍. I’m based in Fort Worth too and live very close to your studio lol.
White balance in one of the dials is the very first thing I thought when I heard about the extra dial option. If you have a dial for WB, you set it to what you see in scene quickly and any tiny changes, 10bit will handle no problem.
*Finally, someone who mentioned zoom calls lol.* How much better do you think the A7IV ($3990) is over the A7c ($2200 AUD)? I’m looking to start making RUclips videos and will likely be forced to work from home now so zoom is my best option. Can the A7C do zoom calls the same as the A7IV? Or do you need a capture card etc? Also, just to confirm, you can do 1080p30 on the zoom calls correct (I think on your example it was 720p30). How is the Sony mic, does it pick up a lot of echo? I’m deciding between a Shure Mv7 and the Sony mic. I like the shure because it doesn’t get echo and has a nice deep sound quality.
Focus mapping only in video mode? That's a bummer. Like you said, peaking is helpful but not a very accurate way to determine exactly what is in focus. Would love to have this feature in stills, especially for when I'm using vintage glass!
Just a tilt up and down screen with high res screen would have been good for wedding photographer like me. It was quick and left safe open when two cameras are hanging on straps. The swivel is good for video shooters but cumbersome for me. Anyone else feel the same.
So glad Sony came out with the a7iv because now I was able to buy one of the best cameras ever made--a7iii with kit lens for less than $2000. And for a landscape photographer who does a lot of post processing to produce the look I want in the final image there is nothing the iv offers that interests me. Rather buy a round trip ticket to Paris.
I do landscape also but it's going to be better for low light ISO, going to have faster autofocus... More pixels for cropping. More dynamic range... No AA filter
I hope focus mapping and focus breathing will find its way into the A1, A7Siii, and FX3 through a firmware update since they use the same processor. 🤞🙏

Good upgrade. I think it’s a little expensive. I am sure Sony would argue the video enhancements etc, but they have A7s3 for that. This should have been priced at $2200, and bring in a lot more of the enthusiasts as new customers. All that said, I preordered 😆😊😊

Great Review. Im a newbie moving away from my Canon 90D (APSC crop) and have a crap ton of lenses for it. What cameras pack the best punch in terms of lenses? I had GH5 prior and loved the small lenses, will you use GH6 more when it comes out? My big questions are which to buy based on which has the best (lowest price best value pro lenses) - GH6, Canon R6, Sony A7IV?
At what ISO (Between 800 and 3200 for Slog3; 125 and 500 for S cinetone), should I just jump to the second ISO? For example, at ISO 2500/400, the noise is worse than ISO 3200/500, that is a given. At that point I should just go to the second ISO. How about other ISOs between 1000/160 and 2500/400? What is the breaking point for jumping to the second ISO? Thank you!
I think, it is one of the best option to complement the set up for a filmmaker who works with the A7SIII. You have two cameras that have nearly the same image quality, the same menus etc. And if you intend to also shot stills, you have the perfect stills camera with a 33 mega pixel sensor. 🙏 Thank you for your video 🙏
Thanks for the review. My question is if the A7IV is a good "upgrade" for the A7RIII? Is it worth losing the resolution for all the other features? I'm a casual landscape/astro/wildlife shooter whose budget can't afford the A1 or A7R4. Is this new camera something I can should consider and why?
If you take photos mostly of landscapes and those things you mentioned, I would not upgrade. Definitely not. BUT it is all subjective so if you see something you just can't manage without, why wouldn't you upgrade. I'm a wedding photographer and I use two A7R3's and can definitely live without these upgrades. I have to admit that this realtime focus, or what ever it is called, is tempting feature to have.
I agree that an upgrade from an A7RIII is questionable for your purposes. The focusing, viewfinder, and iso performance may be better but for what you use it for, save your money for the next upgrade. That’s what I plan on doing.
I have an a7riii and am upgrading to the a7iv. The a7riii is excellent but the AF is a little slow for bird in flight and faster wildlife. When you nail a shot on the a7riii it's amazing but I noticed that switching to it from the a7iii brought my keeper rate down. The a7iv looks like a good middle ground with more resolution than the a7iii but faster af tracking than the a7riii.
Thanks! Preordered mine, I just hope they do not have delivery and/or manufacturing issue's. Coming from the A7III I was looking at the A7RIV for better viewfinder and screen options, but ultimately went for the A7IV
i has the a7 III great camera and worthy upgrade to the II (the half shutter eye auto focus feature is almost worth the price alone!) cant wait to get the 4 someday!
Great point, Tim. I've never taken video in my twenty years of digital photography, and feel that I'm paying for functionality that I'll just never use.
Wish it did 10fps full raw with no shutter lag/drag. It would be the perfect camera for me. Put this sensor in the A9 III & I would make the switch to Sony. But for $2500, it is a good deal compared to what's on the market. Fills the gap for mp's that is wanted by many also.
The α7 IV's sensor, not a _stacked_ design, lacks inbuilt memory chips, RAM [1]. So its nearly 40% rise in resolution to 33 MP-from the α7 III's 24 MP-slows the sensor readout [1]. Seemingly, the α7 IV's processor-which is α1's BIONZ XR-fails to offset the slowdown. The α9 II has the α9's 24 MP _stacked_ sensor, whose inbuilt RAM speeds sensor readout [1,2]. The α9 sensor, a 2017 innovation, inaugurated 20 fps and silent shooting of fast action with little image warp, but apparently was optimized toward high readout speed, not toward low readout noise, why α9 and α9 II lack ISO invariance and thus have maximal dynamic range lower than α7 III's [2,3,4]. Dated 2021, α1's 50 MP stacked sensor offers 30 fps and ISO invariance [1,5]. 1) Richard Butler, "Why the speed of Stacked CMOS is key to Nikon's pro mirrorless camera", _DP Review,_ 8 Mar 2021. 2) Carey Rose, "Sony a9 II review", _DP Review,_ 19 Aug 2020. 3) Rishi Sanyal, "Sony a9: more speed, less dynamic range", _DP Review,_ 18 May 2017. 4) Rishi Sanyal, "Sony a7 III dynamic range and high ISO improve over its predecessor", _DP Review,_ 17 Mar 2018. 5) Rishi Sanyal, "Analysis: New Sony a1 sensor offers class-leading dynamic range, along with high-speed and high-resolution", _DP Review,_ 9 Mar 2021.
@@oasean Thanks. Some great detailed info. I didn’t realize the A9-2 sensor was stacked. But I am surprised it doesn’t have good ISO performance in this day & age. If I make the switch to Sony, ( for the focus system & video) maybe the R3 or R4 will be the compromise in my price range. What ever I purchase , if Sony, needs to play well with the 200-600 lens. Otherwise it might be the Canon R5. Thanks for the great detailed camera info !
@@thomastuorto9929: The α9 II, a sports camera, has excellent ISO performance [1]. The α7 III, too sluggish for a sports camera, had leading ISO performance [1,2]. @@oasean Thanks again. Didn’t’t realize a camera that wasn’t,t ISO invariant would have good iso performance so I looked up the definition. It makes sense that a lower map sensor ( especially from Sony) would have good iso performance. I would like a little more resolution than the A9 , hence my first comment. The R5 would be plenty for me. Actually, 10-12 FPS without no shutter inperformance( is that even a word) would be plenty for me. If my pockets had no bottom, I would of already purchased the A1 / 600f4 combo plus any other desired lenses. Budget makes me a compromiser!
@@thomastuorto9929: To my regret, Sony seemingly marginalizes mechanical shutter-the main drawback of the α7 IV, in my view-whereas Canon's R5 indeed regains a lot there.
Hello, thanks to share your interesting video. I need your advice please. I travel around the world by myself doing 4K documentaries. I don't take pictures. I am worried about the stabiliser which is not good for me. In fact I always take freehand shots and never use a tripod. Can you tell me how the stabiliser works? Is it good for me or should I opt for another camera? Thanks
Why everyone forgets middle member a7c? a7iii was replaced with a7c with removed view finder. So basically you have to compare with a7c cuz it's camera quietly replacement of a7iii, so when you skip a7c yes it's Huge upgrade but with a7c is not that much...
Ok this might be the one.. Looking to go full frame from Olympus and thinking Sony because of the glass.. The only thing that stopped me pulling the trigger so far is the ergonomics - the Oly em1mk2 just feels beautiful in the hand with bullet-proof construction but I guess that's something I'll have to live without :( I guess my one question if anyone has an answer - should I go a7R3 or a74? I'm only interested in stills but still early in my photography, so not sure what I'll be taking pictures of.. At the moment - mainly cityscapes :(
I'm late to reply so maybe you already made a decision, but as a A7R3 owner of 3 years who is going to be selling to replace it with an A74, unless you think you may benefit from the improved eye-autofocus of the A74, the price difference is probably not worth it. The difference in MP between the two (42 vs 33) is only relevant if you plan on making big prints. That said if that's a big concern, the A7R4 (61MP) may be the way to go if its in your budget. Also consider that the R3 is almost 6 years old at this point, so if you plan on keeping it for 3 or 4 years, it will still be a great camera, but will be absolutely left in the dust when it comes to specs and new features and tech that we don't even know will exist yet. For me, as the A74 is just 1 year old, if I wait for the A75 in ~3 years, I will be able to cover about 70% of the cost of upgrading versus _maybe_ 20% or so if I keep the R3 until then.
@@ChadMoiMedia thank you! i went with the a7iv as the price became very competitive... picked up the 16-35gm and zeiss 55 1.8.. hopefully this keeps me out of trouble for the next 10 years 😬
I have A7RIII 10 FPS and this one was a mistake on Sony end not adding @ list 15 FPS, up to 10 FPS but compressed Raw only . 2500.00 really?? My Fuji S10 does 30 FPS with a small crop and 1k camera.
Poor quality back panel, 5fps RAW, crop in 4k. Etc if reviewers lavish praise on this relatively tame upgrade it's only by sheer brand bias. Don't get me wrong, not a bad cam in the slightest. Just not the revolution it's predecessor was.
If this really turns out to be true that a7m4 cannot make 10fps uncompressed raw it will be a huge regression. just checked a7m3 does 10fps uncompressed no problem. a7rm4 can do 10 and these are massive 120mb raw files. specs also state 10fps. so most probably this is some prerelease firmware issue.
@@КирилАнастасов The A7R IV does NOT do uncompressed RAW at 10fps, it also requires shooting lossy compressed RAW files to do 10fps. With uncompressed the A7R IV is also 6fps.
Ok I'm a Sony person. More money on lenses than o care to admit, a a7s3 and my OG a7r3 , a5100 etc etc. Isn't the a7c technically the basic full frame model or does the one card thing take it out of the equation?

Thank you!
I have the a7c and. I’m going to wait for the a7c ii. Hopefully it will have these internals.
Is this new camera something I can should consider and why?
the 33mp on the a74 should be better than the a7r3 in low light, but i can't say for sure, hopefully someone makes some vid comparison
@@willyg1988 would you choose the a7riv over either?
I’m a hybrid shooter, is it advisable to switch from Canon 5D mark iv to this camera. P:S I rent out lenses when needed on my mark iv.
Thanks! Preordered mine, I just hope they do not have delivery and/or manufacturing issue's. Coming from the A7III I was looking at the A7RIV for better viewfinder and screen options, but ultimately went for the A7IV
Great video!
i has the a7 III great camera and worthy upgrade to the II (the half shutter eye auto focus feature is almost worth the price alone!) cant wait to get the 4 someday!
when recording video in portrait mode, will the file transfer as portrait?
Nice, but I don't need video. Any suggestion on which of the Sony full-frames to consider?
Great point, Tim. I've never taken video in my twenty years of digital photography, and feel that I'm paying for functionality that I'll just never use.
You're awesome Ted! Thanks for the rundown. Good grief how am I going to afford this..
As a photographer that does not shoot video, do you think it’s worth the $2500 price tag?
Looks to be a huge upgrade from my a7ii. Lol
The A7ii was a great camera. The A7iiis was a heck of an upgrade, this aa7iv is stunning.. Try it..

Canon R5's sensor, conventional instead of stacked, enables a fully electronic shutter that is up to 20 fps but is more limited than Sony α9 II's when shooting fast action [3].

Thanks thats lot of info!
How many of these features can be or are firmware updates?
Hello, thanks to share your interesting video. I need your advice please. I travel around the world by myself doing 4K documentaries. I don't take pictures. I am worried about the stabiliser which is not good for me. In fact I always take freehand shots and never use a tripod. Can you tell me how the stabiliser works? Is it good for me or should I opt for another camera? Thanks
mang, i want this a74!!!
Why everyone forgets middle member a7c? a7iii was replaced with a7c with removed view finder. So basically you have to compare with a7c cuz it's camera quietly replacement of a7iii, so when you skip a7c yes it's Huge upgrade but with a7c is not that much...
How does the Canon R5 compare to the new Sony A7IV??
can you get webcam function via firmware on the a1 or a7s3 ?
Excellent review! Thanks for a fantastic job!
Ok this might be the one.. Looking to go full frame from Olympus and thinking Sony because of the glass.. The only thing that stopped me pulling the trigger so far is the ergonomics - the Oly em1mk2 just feels beautiful in the hand with bullet-proof construction but I guess that's something I'll have to live without :(
I guess my one question if anyone has an answer - should I go a7R3 or a74?
@@ChadMoiMedia thank you! i went with the a7iv as the price became very competitive... picked up the 16-35gm and zeiss 55 1.8.. hopefully this keeps me out of trouble for the next 10 years 😬
Great video. Thanks!
Think its time to sell my a7r ii....Have you seen something about bracketing or stacking in the menu?
Thanks for the great review
Is there improvement on the batterylive? There where complains on the A73. I am not a souny shooter, maybe…
the complaints where mostly on the A71 and A72 ... the A73 has incredible battery life. I can shoot upwards of 1500 shots with 1 battery no problem.
You should review the camera with its actual lense not with a G master
It looks a very nice update camera thanks for the review
Pre ordered mine.Hope someone makes a L-bracket to work with the flip screen for landscape photographers.🤞🏻🤞🏻
I have A7RIII 10 FPS and this one was a mistake on Sony end not adding @ list 15 FPS, up to 10 FPS but compressed Raw only . 2500.00 really??
My Fuji S10 does 30 FPS with a small crop and 1k camera.
When you think about it, this camera has quite a few features that we wouldn't have gotten if this camera had come out a year, year and a half ago.
I just purchased one. I shot with my Canon for the longest time. I’m looking forward to its astrophotography capabilities.
Get the 14mm GM
How's the 2160p60? Does it cause the camera to overheat
after about 2h yes, it won't shut down but it does get considerably hot. I think Gerald Undone has more details about that in his review!
Poor quality back panel, 5fps RAW, crop in 4k. Etc if reviewers lavish praise on this relatively tame upgrade it's only by sheer brand bias.
Don't get me wrong, not a bad cam in the slightest. Just not the revolution it's predecessor was.
👍👍👍
You’re a great teacher.
Ted, do you think we'll ever see a touch menu upgrade via firmware for the A7III?
No, because of the processor.
any comments about the LCD screen quality?
The worst LCD Display Resolution in Camera Industry.
It's almost end of the year.. how it would be the camera of the year?
I reviewed the accessibility remark over the read speed, i'm still laughing :)))
So far only one review has mentioned how the 10fps is used when shooting compressed raw. Uncompressed is 6fps I think.
@@TechnoBabble good to know, 10x
Its finally here!! My baby. Now just gotta save up for one and walt for he backlog to die down. ;p great job Sony!!
Ok I'm a Sony person. More money on lenses than o care to admit, a a7s3 and my OG a7r3 , a5100 etc etc. Isn't the a7c technically the basic full frame model or does the one card thing take it out of the equation?
