Hello Mike, I am very grateful to you for this wonderful review. Could you please answer me some of my questions please ? I shall be very grateful. 1. How's this lens for star Time-lapses ? 2. Which other affordable manual focus lens would you recommend ? 3. Will you be able to make a complete tutorial for how to film star Time-lapses ? ie everything like camera settings etc etc. Thanks a lot
I moved away from the UAE shortly after making this to a big city in Asia, so I haven't been able to do any astro timelpases with this. It would be good for it though. I made a video on the top ten wide angle lenses for astro a while back, check it out when you get the chance: ruclips.net/video/3RTrXdCLR4E/видео.html Thanks for watching 😁👍
@@mikesphotography Thank you so much. Which city you have been living now ? I have learnt a lot from your videos. Especially as a Sony shooter, I found your videos a are the best !! Regards
I am a newbie to fancy cameras and lenses. Can I please ask you a question ? If I want a lens to use to take videos while I am hiking down a trail is this a great lens to buy or does the slower autofocus compared to a Sony GM lens make it a problem ? Thank you.
I've used both the Sony GM lenses as well as the Tamron lenses and the difference is so small that 99% of people wouldn't even notice it. I use the tamron for video and it works very well. Thanks for watching 😁👍
I love my Tamron trinity, and this video makes me even happier with them, hopefully I can go see the night sky away from NYC in the near future to try more of my own shots with the 17-28. The 17-28 and 28-75 (and a raise at work) made the a7iii an accessible camera for me. They're not perfect, but I feel their disadvantages aren't worth around $1,000 per lens compared with their G Master competitors for me as someone that enjoys photography but doesn't make a business of it (but need the low light and AF performance that my old M43 kit couldn't provide).
@@mikesphotography Yep, preordered it a week before it came out and it arrived on Tuesday. Really only been using it for portraits at the moment, but looking forward to getting more out of it.
Thanks Mike this is the combination I was looking for when I upgrade to full frame ( A6000 + Sigma 16mm) the price of the Sony a7iii has jumped up $800 since the Corona 19 starting, would you do a post on a crop sensor lens on a full frame please. Dave
Gr8 review Mike , hope you are Covey safe..having initially started with a Canon lense ,I experimented with Tamron -amazed by the sharpness..tried Samyang & finally got hooked on Sigma 20mm f1.4 ..often,it comes down to budget ,which is where Tamron helps.💫
Thanks a lot for the review Mike. Just bought a A7ii, (quite a bargain) and wanted to keep it in a low budget as possible..I was thinking of Samyang 18mm 2.8 for Astrophotografy ..Whats your opinion!? Thanks a lot for your help!!!
No worries Jesus! The 18mm samyang is pretty good, another one to look out for is the 14mm samyang 2.8. they are both good, as long as you get good copies of them. Sometimes the quality control at samyang isn't great so if you do go for one, just make sure you get one from a place where you can return it, just in case. 👍
Thanks so much! Yes, the 20mm 1.8 is meant to be fantastic...I haven't tried it yet... I'd also go for the 15mm Laowa as well...that is meant to be great for astrophotography. 😁👍
Great video, Mike. I have only been out once last year with my 24mm 1.4 to shoot the Milky Way. I am hoping to get out this month to get some shots, but unfortunately, Milky Way season in the south coincides with ultra high humidity and lots and lots of cloudy days and storms. It is always do disappointing to plan a shoot, only to get the weather report for that night showing overcast skies. I have a shot in mind that will require about six exposures in portrait to be used in a pano, so fingers crossed. Hopefully you will get paroled soon and be able to get some shooting of the night skies. Hope you and yours continue to do well, brother.
Those cloudy nights always seem to get in the way!! It's all about persistence then, or having a grab bag with your kit ready to go. 👍 We're quite lucky here...although it gets hot, we still get cloud free skies during the season. We're good, no chance of going out at night yet but hopefully soon. 👍
I have a good copy of the Samyang 14mm and have found the Tamron to be sharper, with better transmission and less amp glow. Impressive considering how light and small it is.
Good to hear Tom, Unfortunately I dropped my samyang 14mm before I got the tamron so couldn't do a side by side comparison... Good to hear of your experiences though. 😁👍
interesting thanks, im highly contemplating trading out my samyang 14mm 2.8 for tamron 17-28, i mainly do astro and figured it would be nice to have that additional range. so you reckon there is not much sacrifice going to the tamron vs the samyang?
Great video as always Mike! I'm actually thinking of selling my Samyang 14mm f2.8 to get this lens as I would like to have a longer focal range while doing astro photography. Do you think that 3mm difference will make a big change? Thanks!
I am in the same place Mattias, I am very disappointed with the Samyang, it seems to be very difficult to focus and is blurry. Maybe its the operator but I am am happier to take the f stop hit and use the 35 to 16mm F4 Sony F4 lens instead for astrophotography. Be interested to hear other thoughts
Mattias, I've really noticed the 3mm difference between the samyang and the tamron. But it is nice to have the options to zoom in a little on the fly. Peter, I hear there are some bad copies about so it's a bit of a lucky dip as to whether you get a good one or not. I was luck that I got a good one...i was not so lucky when I dropped it and it smashed. There is a version 2 coming out very soon as well.

Great video Mike! Very useful, expecially if you're an astrophotographer. What do you think about the Sigma 14-24 2.8? I know it costs a little more than the Tamron but probably the difference in price is worth it considering the extra 3 millimeters (quite wider) Do you think the Sigma could be a better purchase although more expensive?
I'd say go for the sigma 14-24mm. It looks like a fantastic lens with great quality, even wide open! I did a video on 10 wide angle lenses for astro a while back, check it out when you get a chance. ruclips.net/video/3RTrXdCLR4E/видео.html&t Thanks for watching 😁👍
I got some pretty good results in astrophotography with Sony 16-35 f/2.8. What do you think about that particular lens Mike Smith? I know prime lenses might be better because of the lower f/values (wider apertures)
The sony 16-35mm is a fantastic lens for astro. The f2.8 is a great aperture for astrophotography, and even though the primes are faster, you can get some great shots with this lens. 👍
I always get a bright star in shot and then focus to that. It takes a while to get it right and sometimes it might be a little bit out. I find that it takes a bit of practice but once you've done it a few times, it all starts to make sense. 👍
Great video. But as you said - get a tracker. I am able to manage 20 minutes exposure shots with f5.6 and ISO 100 of the Milky way with crisp stars. The lens doesnt matter so much in this case.
Most definitely. I have a video coming up later in the year emphasising this point. Once you get a tracker...you can shoot some amazing shots even with the kit lens. 👍
@@mikesphotography yeah exactly. At this time i am testing the Canon M6II with the 11-22 ef-m mounted on the star adventurer pro. Stopped down to f5.6 and ISO 100 with a 20 minutes exposure it works amazingly well.

The Laowa 15mm have most coma aberration than many other lenses. Don't have any rubber sealing in mount ring like this Tamron, is only one stop better at F2.0 and is really expensive for a lens without any comunication with the camera... Sony 20 1.8 G or 24 1.4 GM are far way better.

This 17-28's Distortion and Vignette performance is cleaned up anyway in LR once the lens profile is enabled. Just like any other lens, when you remove the lens profile your going to see issues. That's why we don't remove the profile. Many prime lenses also have much of the same issues too and they cost much more money. As you mentioned, many of these much faster, more expensive lenses, need to be stopped down to equal the performance of the 17-28 at 2.8. So, your paying for the 1.4, but using it as a 2.8. Waste of money to me. The Laowa lenses appear to have issues for Astro work based on the testings of Lenstips.com. The corner performance of Coma and aberrations is not good on the one you recommended in this video.I was thinking of thiat 15mm F2 until I saw the poor performance in the corners.
