    Remember this guy? Yep since I'm moving I had my scrap picked up and this was still in the shop collecting dust so I decided to do the tear down on it, I'm glad I did because I got a nice little keepsake out of it. BTW don't yell at me for using my impact lets face it, this engine is scrap!

    You've come along way Eric and you've helped a lot of people along the way.I started watching your videos when I was 19,I'm now 25.When I first started watching your videos I knew nothing about cars,now I have completed several project vehicles,been paid to work on peoples cars and discovered I have a knack for fixing things.I Will be starting an apprenticeship as a Millwright within the next year,all because you inspired me and taught me.THANK YOU ERIC!

    @Gizmopflege I hear about situations like that all the time from people with 'cold air intakes' that draw air from behind the fender well that don't use the relief valve in the pipe. Liquids don't compress no matter how much force you apply. Thanks for the comment.

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  13 лет назад

    @youtubasoarus I think it was just driven till it died as I don't think the owner put much thought into it. I think after the oil ran dry and things started to heat up they began to come apart, I think the connecting rod cap came apart first and once that happened and metal started flying the rest is history as they say. Thanks for the comment.

    @kvcuijck Excellent point, the good thing about the top end of these engines is that the cam sits in a troth of oil that feeds most of the moving parts up there, sure it could still be damaged but really the only place this head would come in handy is to get a car running for cheep, I would not install this on a customer car without showing them this video first. Thanks for your comment.

    @scottaner500 The 'o' ring in the video. Don't use goop of any kind let the gasket do the work. Perhaps after you try to change a leaking gasket that has been coated with crap and you have to clean all that stuff off to install a new gasket to stop the leak you will see what I'm talking about. If there is a gasket let it do it's work, if there is no gasket use a high quality RTV, on Hondas I use Honda bond but you have to let it cure before you expose it to oil.

    my niece came to visit me and asked if i could check he car out due to strange noises coming from the engine bay. The first thing I checked was her oil and guess what - zero oil showing in the crank case. I filled it up and off the old corolla went but not before i pleaded with her to at least check the oil. I'm convinced many chicks know the consequences of neglecting simple maintenance, but simply don't give a fark and continue on wards. Hopeless! enjoyed this series of vids cheers Eric!

    It's amazing how low the oil can get, even on some American engines, before you start destroying stuff. I work regularly on a Pontiac G6 that once that was below the fill line for maybe 2 months of summer driving and still it runs today 60,000 miles later thanks, I think, to the fact that it's always been run on synthetic. The oil was nearly gone and absolutely filthy when I drained it, but after two short 1,000 mile changes it was clean and happy again.

    Hello,Eric. If there were no hols in the pan, clean it, and check the mounting surface. If that is flat,part that out. Ditto for the head.
    I had the bypass hose leak, and barely over temped my original D15B7. Inside of a year, the HG went. Hondas do not like heat. Put in a newer D15b, running strong again.

    @Anacinc I've seen charity events for that kind of thing betting on how long it will take for a given engine to let go without oil at full throttle, they are called 'brick in's' because you put a brick on the gas pedal and wait for it to blow.

  • @tartredarrow

    I did a motor in like that one on the racetrack. Didn't know the car didn't have a rev limiter and drove it down the hill in too low a gear. Drove it deep into redline at WOT. Stretched the bolts in the bottom end. A lap later, the con rod came through the front and back of the block. Still ran on 3 cylinders though, fuckin little mazda that could.

    6:45 Crank is useless, better keep the loosing order correct :D
    I once had a engine to change, fortunately the customer didn't want the old one so I kept it to look inside once I had time.
    since I knew what the cause of the damage was I also knew where to look, so I took the oil pan out to get a look on the crank. Surprisingly there was no visible damage imediately but the engine woulnt rotate at all so I started unscrewing the tie rods from each piston. On the first piston both of the tie rod bearing shells forged into one. It was hard to believe this happened but its all experience. I now tell customers who have the same engine to let a mechanic look after their engine to prevent such damages.
    I like this channel, as a mechanic its nice to see that you're doing this on your spare time. If only I had the space to do something like this :/

    • @Pathfinder3877
      @Pathfinder3877 9 лет назад

      +monarch6425 Ehm first of all I meant that as a joke as he loosened the CRANKSHAFT as he saw fit at the given timestamp. And then I definetly meant the crankshaft because loosening and tightening orders are there for a reason. I don't need another job, trust me I feel fine in there ;)

    • @monarch6425
      @monarch6425 9 лет назад +2

      Pathfinder3877 Wasn't talking about that genius. You called the connecting rods "tie rods". And the fact that my previous comment just seemed to fly right over your head signifies that yes you do need a different job.

    I had bearings in my still running 1.3 Opel Kadett that literally had holes in the middle and bits of bearing chips floating in the gap. The tabs on the ends of the bearings had broken off and the bearing was spinning in between the conrod and crank as well.

    Speaking of the trophy piston, my buddy has one from his 02 mustang GT he popped a 12 psi vortech onto few years back, and ran it with a moderately leanish tune on it. Took off down the track and we were all standing about half way down, he hit 3rd gear and we heard what sounded like a pillow exploding. Upon towing it home and tearing it down, we found the #8 piston was in pieces and the rod was barely recognizable lol. The hyper-pathetic piston didn't like that boost or the tune too well.

    For those that going to say what has the diff got to do with it, these engines had the G/B under the engine, shared oil. Asked him if the oil slick wasn't a bit of a clue, it didn't appear to be though. Went on to do a PHD. Was going to save some stuff but he got rid of them as he thought I would continue to torment him with them, which I would. Kept head as well and put it on his next engine
