This is a £2600 twin-turbocharged BMW 335i. It cost almost HALF what one would usually sell for, so it could be a bargain. But it has a HUGE problem that could cost thousands to fix. It should have just over 300hp, but when we raced this car at a drag strip in the last episode, it was PAINFULLY slow, even losing to our videographer's brown diesel 5 series.

YES PLEASE!! I drive a 2012 KIA Picanto manual 1,2. Real death trap. Found out I've had a loose subframe bolt since before the car was even bought. Would love to see what can be made of them haha
Sell that hot air intake, trade it for a stock airbox, heat reflective tape it, and drop in a K&N panel filter
Intakes on these are much better than the stock box for stage 2, given the air goes through an intercooler anyway

@@samuelgarrod8327 Really ?. I tune Saabs for a living and the engines can make 500bhp with zero engine mods. They are massive fun. Some models can go from 150bhp to 305bhp for just £125. The SAAB Clinic UK.

@JamieE200 incidentally, the videos from TDC are informative and interesting and they do feature a more encompassing menagerie of cars and do different things to each one, depending on what is required.
Also, you have once again fallen into the hole of, if someone doesn't watch a video, how will he know if it is worth watching? The fact that I have to explain something so incredibly simple, to so many people is quite perturbing.

UK car prices are insane. Checked my local sites and found a 2006 one for 12k a 2011 one for 15k and a convertible 2010 one for 21k.
UK car prices are legitimately about 30% lower than continental Europe my guy.

UK has the cheapest cars in the world. There are E92s around for £15k, before v1rus a 996 was 8k.
they don't really have an export market within Europe so naturally they don't hold their value great... compared to mainland Europe at least.

What I don’t get with these people who mod cars with no understanding is those stupid cone air filters. The manufacturers put an intercooler to cool the air before the turbo then these twerps put those stupid air filters in the engine compartment usually over the manifold so it’s feeding red hot air into the intercooler thus negating any benefit

Agree but manufacturers also have to sacrifice some performance for usability. A decent filter set up will be more useful than stock set up

I can't believe you can buy a E92 335i for 2500!! Thats alot of car for the money. Here in Greece they ask 20-30k for them!!!
Although I own a E46, I believe the E92 is the best looking 3 series ever made.

Funny how the naturally aspirated 3.0 makes 265hp. Having 2 useless turbos saps 100hp!
Different fuelling and ignition timing I assume!
It would also have much lower compression than the NA counterpart, definitely interesting tho.
Timing & fueling would have been way off, essentially limp moding the car. If it was putting in as much fuel as it does on boost it'd have been pissing out the exhaust unburnt

To everybody who thinks: "N54s can't be that bad and they make massive power for cheap - I am going to get one!" Don't! - Regards from an N54 owner, wwhich currently runs great.

I have modded a couple of N54s, what I learned was the engine itself is quite reliable, whats bolted to it not so much. Turbo wastegates, charge pipes, intercoolers, solenoids, pcv valve and vacuum pipes are all potential problems and direct injection leads to carbon build up ion the intake valves. But it is all fixable, and there is a big N54 community to help you understand it. As you saw space is tight but the tuning potential is there, 400hp on stock turbos is as you can see quite easy. Replaceing them with slightly bigger units gives you 500 hp plus potential. The stock block sees its limit at around 7-800hp as its not a closed deck.The ZF 6 speed auto is a decent auto box with good reliability and can work really well with an XHP tune. In New Zealand a 335i can be had for less than 10k nzd, the poor mans 2jz. 😂😂
It's wild to me just how fast the 54 series motor went from a tuner darling when new to an absolute afterthought with the 55 and especially with the 58 series.
you can't blame that IC... yet. loose those intakes, recheck the temps with stock airbox, you may find that the IC is fine.
Also, you could measure out the internals of the IC to compare with the stock one to see if it's an improvement. Often the stock one is tightly packed but has actually decent volume to it. Of course, the aftermarket should flow better, but careful not to loose (or gain) too much volume.
Much prefer the content on this channel to autoalex, you guys actually work on the cars and mostly behave like adults 😂😂

A friend of mine is working in GRIDSERVE Norwich. They have explained to me the biggest problem with the grid serve is the leasing. It’s not possible for them to make profit on any lease due to depreciation. They are scraping or making money apparently on high profit electric being solved top up vehicles, but overall there in negative profit

There's few better feelings than when a dauntingly expensive looking fix turns out to be cheap as chips. I expected a £500 fix once when my car refused to start at the side of the road, the RAC came out, he took a look and cos we were chatting about cars, having a bit of banter he did the oh expensive "draw of breath!
He went to his van fiddled about, came back with something and after 5 mins car ran again, no problem, he then turned to me and said £7 please......a bloody earth strap had failed, apparently it was a common fail for my car at the age it was lol. I was that relieved that I gave him a drink (£20) for his troubles.
This channel is putting out much better stuff than auto Alex. Those guys are just posting "here's what I bought" videos, and not doing anything with them.

Reminds me of a few years ago when I bought a van with my old man. We got 1/4 mile up the road before the engine light threw, so drove it back (bought from a mechanic) and a vacuum line had popped off. Quick start and some maneuvering later and it was gone.

As an a fella who watched OG TG when it launched in 01 as an adult... your channel brings me much of the same joy I would get from those episodes as well. You can tell you're not just cohosts you're actual friends and thats what made TG/GT so much more than a car show. Keep it up!
Make sure you snap the little cage to the oil filter cap, otherwise it'll rattle in there until you get rough idle with no codes. If it doesn't snap back on, new oil filter housing cap.
As someone that works on bmws and specializes in the n5x platform. It was so painful to watch this episode lol.

The boost pipe came off my MiTo and I didn't notice for about a month although I thought it was a little down on power! An easy fix at least.

I have made exactly the same mistake with the oil filter gasket on that engine. The gasket doesn't go where it looks like it should go.
I feel like those road racing slicks are not going to be much help on a drag strip. My understanding is that you need to get a ton of heat deep into those tires or the carcass will be too stiff. I'll be curious to see if they perform much better than the road tires.
another good way to test for holes, is to pressurize the system and the drive your car into a pool and check for bubbles

Just fyi, a crap remap can stop the ecu from telling you correct codes or even registering codes.
