  • Painting intuitively for me is all about play and experimentation. For this reason, I like to take creative risks. In this week's video, I'm trying something completely new using some watercolor ground. I want to create texture, real texture and I think this is the way to go. Who knows what will happen, but at the very least, I know I'm going to learn something new.

I love this and I love that you use the term 'abstract' correctly. So many RUclips artists paint various flowers and call them abstract. If everyone can tell it's a flower, it's not abstract. On the other hand, I see a penguin here. LOL

I love the use of a fountain pen for stippling. I have a fountain pen to try to use to stipple but it is almost impossible to load an ink cartridge into. I see you are using a pilot pen. Are the cartridges hard to insert in your pen? I'd like to try to use one that it didn't feel like I was breaking my wrist to install the cartridge. Thank you for your videos. I so enjoy watching.

Hi ❤️🤗 Thank you so much for your kind words and for making the time to watch my channel! I'm so happy to see you're feeling inspired to paint and explore your own creativity! ☺️ The ink cartridges for my Pilot fountain pen are actually very easy to install. I was ready your comment and if I was dealing with the same issue with my pen, I would definitely not recommend it as I am dealing with wrist and elbow issues at the moment. I love my fountains pen and still use it quite a bit, but because of the pain in my arms, I've recently moved on to using a dotting pen that I also really love. I only got the dotting pen in December so it's only featured in my most recently posted videos (in case you're curious to know about this pen 😉). Thank you so much for making the time to reach out!! I appreciate your presence here ❤️

WOW! I can't believe you chose to work with stencils this week. I actually bought my first stencils this very week and was wondering how I could use them more creatively than just painting them on the paper. I have just this minute ordered some watercolour ground and can't wait to get started. Thank you for keeping me on such a creative path.

Beautiful outcome and I like that you experimented with texture. I am not familiar with watercolor ground, how does it compare to gesso? I too worked with acrylics long before watercolors so I am curious. Keep experimenting!

Thank you Donna ☺️ I will say upfront that I have never done a head to head comparison of WC ground and gesso. I use both, though I generally use gesso more often. In my limited use of WC ground, I can say that it seems to be slightly more absorbent than gesso (when used with watercolors). I used diluted gesso with my watercolors fairly frequently and in that form, I think it lends itself well to increasing the opacity of the paint while also making it lighter in value. A few people have mentioned that gesso works equally well for creating texture on WC paintings. I imagine that it would work well, but since I have never used gesso in this way (with watercolors), I cannot confirm or deny this. The WC ground seems to work well with watercolors, but it is of course less absorbant than WC paper. Another thing I've noticed is that the WC ground I have from Daniel Smith is relatively thick which is one reason it worked well to create the texture on my painting. I have different brands of gesso and they vary in thickness and consistency. I imagine using a thicker type of gesso would work better for this type of effect. The best way to discover anything, I think, is to experiment and see what happens! So I'll be giving this a try as well ☺️ I hope this helps! Thank you for watching and for making the time to connect ❤️

I might have missed you mentioning but curious how long you allowed the ground to dry? When using to create a surface to paint on (if I remember correctly, need to dig the tub out) it’s suggested to wait 24 hours - my impatience is a bit triggered by that in general 😂 BUT I do have some & I LOVE LOVE LOVE this alternative use idea and wonder if I could use my heat tool to speed things along for this type application?
I ended up with 2 huge containers of the black ground b/c the first arrived busted and a free replacement was sent - thinking on how cool shimmery and/or neon watercolor might work in conjunction with the that -🤔 desperately in need of ideas to put that to use so thank you! but want to dig out my stencils and the white ground asap thanks to your inspiration 🙏❤️

I applied my WC ground and had to walk away from my process until the next day because something else was calling for my attention. However, with the summer heat, it seemed to have cured completely a few hours later. I completely understand your impatience 😉 It’s nice to be able to get painting asap when inspiration strikes! I haven’t tried using a heat tool, but I say it’s always good to experiment with these things because it’s the best way to learn. I’m so excited for you that you have so much of it to play with. I’m ordering more because my little bottle is now empty and there is so much more I want to do with this product ☺️ Have fun experimenting and playing with this! The ground you speak of is it like gesso or liquitex?😊

    • @gabrielleannacormierart
      @gabrielleannacormierart  5 месяцев назад

Watercolor ground is a medium developed to act like the surface of watercolor paper. It's not exactly like watercolor paper, but it can make less porous surfaces accept watercolor better. I like it because I can use it to create textures on my paper before adding my colors. Some people have said you can use gesso in its place, but I don't find it works the same way. Liquitex makes another type of medium called light modeling paste and I find this to be more like watercolor ground. If you have a look at the comments people have left (for this video or other videos where I use this product), I believe other viewers have shared their recipes for creating something similar to watercolor ground. I hope this helps! Thank you for watching ☺️

Hi Gabrielle! This is such a beautiful painting. I bought a little pot of the Daniel smith’s watercolor ground because after seeing your painting I had to try it too. I love putting texture in my oil & acrylic paintings. I’m used to using something with a thicker consistency though. I use a lot of wall plaster, texture paste or heavy gloss gel under acrylics to do stencils. The watercolor ground I received has the consistency of Elmers glue. So when I try to put it on the stencil it just leaked underneath the stencil edges and all of the lines got really blurry. I watched the part where you did the stencil several times over and I couldn’t tell if there was any of the watercolor ground that got under the stencil it doesn’t look like it to me. It looks like yours gourd is much more firm and you got clean lines. Did you do anything to thicken it up? I did notice that you weren’t using it directly from the pot and you put a little bit on a paper pallet first, so I didn’t know if you let it sit for a little while so that it would thicken up a bit before you used it? Can you let me know if you had some tricks to get this to work? Thank you so much for your time.

Hi ❤️ The first WC ground I was using was a bit older which means it may indeed have dried and become a bit thicker over time. However, I did buy more of the same brand (in a larger format) and it is also still relatively thick though it seems just a bit less thick than the first one. Neither format of the WC ground I’m using has seeped under my stencils… Is yours in a little bottle or a container more like a jar? I wonder if while you’re working on something else and still keeping a close eye on your WC ground you could leave the lid off your product for a little while to let some of the moisture from it dry. I would do this very carefully and stir it a frequent intervals. This might help. Like you, I love the texture I can create with acrylics and with oils! This is definitely different! Many have mentioned using modeling paste in the same way I’m using the ground - I wonder if you mixed a bit of another medium in yours, if this might also help? It’s frustrating when we buy something and hope it will work a certain way and then it doesn’t. 😔 Don’t give up on this just yet! I think it’s definitely possible to do some little adjustments for this this to work. Please let me know how you make out 🤗

      @@gabrielleannacormierart Hi Gabrielle!
Thank you so much for taking the time to respond to my questions!
My water color ground is a short wide round 4oz plastic jar with a lid the same size as the jar, so it does have a nice large opening. I left the jar open for 2 hours today while I was painting. I set a 15 minute timer to remind me to stir it frequently. At first I didn’t think it was doing anything but at an hour and a half it started thickening, those last few stirs I could tell each stir it was making more and more of a difference. I haven’t been able to test it yet because my toddler woke up but I’ll test it soon.
I’m so excited to try it again! I painted on the stencil I did a few days ago. Even without the stencil being sharp it was still super fun and I learned a lot especially how much paint it will suck up. It’s such a cool and weird material to paint on top of. I’m excited to experiment.

PSA- I had Daniel Smith watercolor medium on hand so decided to try this with the TRANSPARENT medium and found it to be far looser and runnier consistency than the Titanium White. Don’t know if I just got a weird batch or what but the Transparent did NOt hold the shape of the stencil at all. Will reserve that to use to prepare old book pages instead.

Oh wow!! Thank you so much for sharing this! I only have the titanium white and I'm taking note of this for future purchases. What you say could also apply to different brands of gesso. I own a few different brands and they all vary in consistency and thickness. I think the thicker the consistency of the product, the better it would lend itself to this type of application.
