Had to stop the clip halfway through, to comment on Roy's workmanship. I've followed a number of sill repairs and the skill demonstrated and quality of his repair is exceptional 👌
Roy/Gareth it shows the care you guys put into these repairs. You sorted one wing on my car a few years ago and the other wing nearly a year ago and both are still perfect. The car is used every day and is out in all weathers. If anyone is considering having this done, I can highly recommend your company's repairs. I hope you are all keeping well. Regards John
Thanks very much for this and the first of this 2 part. Very useful. I did the same last year on one side of mine. If you could show us more detail on another video of how you make the ‘inner upright’ and the ‘rear box section end curved’ this would be fantastic as you cannot buy these and often they are rusted away so as a hobbyist some guessing us used. Your experience would really help us. Cheers!
Hey guys, I love your restauration videos and your work. I bought my first MX5 a couple months before, it's a 92' model and the previous owner did a terrible job with rust repair. He used stainless steel plates, rivets and some self tapping screws. So I gotta cut everything out and fix it the right way this time. I order new sills, quarter panels as well as the inner wheel arch panel. I have some experience with the rust repairs and welding, but the most difficult part of the repairs is custom panel fabrication. Could you please include some of the metal plate fabrication process such as the inner arch and parts of the floor. It would also be cool to see some welding. I would highly appreciate it. Greetings from Norway!
Brilliant work , as ever , from Roy . These are the only people I would buy a used MX5 from . Unfortunately , they are over 200 miles too far away , so I'll have to continue buying new ones .
WOW! Amazing work & a really great video. Roy is an artist! If it's possible, could you do a vid on how you make & install the rear box sections. They look great. Thanks.
Taking ownership of the family mk1 roadster in a couple weeks, looking forward to booking an inspection and get a chance to meet you guys! Definitely worth the trip from Southampton...
Looking at the website.....a BASIC repair each side is £882,the work done on this car is beyond that....i'm thinking more like 2k! Is it cost effective, unless you've got a low mileage special edition, the repair would be as much as the vehicles value?Great work though.
@@andyedwards8945 thing is though once the work is done you KNOW it's solid. When buying another car you have no clue what the state of the insides of the sills etc are like and even if the person selling it has had work done, you don't know if whoever did the work is this good.
Do you reckon you could do a similar sort of how to guide for sill lips and and full sills? This was really useful for those of us who live abroad and can't bring our MX5s to England to get repaired by you.
i have just watched this and subscribed to your channel fanatic work. can i ask throughly how much this sort of work costs ? i know every job is different but there are so many body shops which they can do this sort of work but who really knows what they have actually done
I would like to see a FULL ROCKER PANEL REPLACEMENT along with a sill replacement. My 04 mx-5 needs rocker replacement due to rust .i can not get inner upright panel. The bottom is rotted thru. What is the recommended procedure. I have a weld on repl. rocker panel and a front half of qtr panel
just about to start on my sons car, previous owner got some welding done on the rears and there is more filler over the corners and welds that its come through in about 9 months
yep just in contact with you at the moment ,ground some out and discovered its beyond me as main rail is also rotten and slightly out of my comfort zone , son has decided to get it done properly , also a Dakar model @@lightsuplightsdown3018
Do you open up the sill drains with a drill or judt shave them? If so how many mill would you say to open then up by? I'm doing full sills and quarters on my mx5 in the coming months do you have any pointers ?
Fascinating work and thanks for explaining what to look out for as I will be tackling my rear arches soon. Are the inner arch repair panels available to buy?
Originally the rear wing/sill is spot welded to the inner structural sill in the same location we have done it here. We often see repaired cars with the outer panel attached to the bottom sill lip as you suggest, but this is incorrect and is usually done because the inner structural sill is rusty and wont support welding, so they weld onto the bottom lip, something the owner will find out when they attempt to jack their car up on the sill (something we don't recommend) and it collapses inward because there is no structural strength left in it.
Lights up Lights down ahh, great info there.. Would be awesome with some compareson shots of how others have repaired it. Usually at my work if a car (non miatas) is in for MOT and it only has to go through and not be a showroom car, i do it the way i wrote, thats why. Just have to find clean metal to tag on. 😂
I am pretty dissapointed for my Mk1 after seeing how well you know these cars, since I do not think anyone would do it with so much love as you do for these cars around my area. I am realy afraid that if I take it to a body shopn, they would just make it worse.
Serious skill, knowledge and attention to detail shown by Roy. The time this all takes justifies the cost. Thanks for showing.
Thanks Colin

Roy is an awesome craftsman, well done Roy. regards, David.
Awesome, would've been great to see some welding being done and the painting process!
This little repair was enough to convince me to bring my E39 540i to you for some love. Can't wait to have it fixed!

Thanks John, I'm glad yours is still looking good
Roy - A sheetmetal artisan! I enjoyed seeing the process, but dread going under my Miata with an ice pick to see how bad it is...
Excellent attention to detail and top quality work, this shows you are the best workshop for MX5 sill repairs
Thanks :)

You guys do awesome work which is rare in this day and age. I only wish you had a shop here in the United States.
Thanks Paul
If I was in the UK, I would send you my car pronto. The inner rocker is starting to rust through ahead of the rear wheel.

Man I wish I had a canadian equivalent of Roy near me. Incredible job!
We can see very good doing ! greetings from NRW germany MX 5 NC ! 2.2021 ...
Great work. What is the approximate cost of a repair like this?

Nice job , have you done any videos of the front chassis members being done ?
Real good videos on this keep it up 👍🏼

Beautiful job, any chance you can send Roy up to Newcastle to do that to my MX5 please?
Thank you David, you can't abduct Roy though, we need him here :)
Hi, I noticed you primed the panels, will this not rust through over time as primer is porus? Is this a special primer to weld through?

How did you cut/make the new outer panel match the old fender so well? Whats the method?

That sounds like it wasn't repaired correctly.

Do you have to spot weld the parts in or can you mig weld it

Hi Ross, they are just made bigger during the rebuild process
Do you only tackle MX-5 projects or would you look at other vehicles. My s2k had the rear arches "repaired" a few years back. Already rusting again 😢
Fascinating work and thanks for explaining what to look out for as I will be tackling my rear arches soon. Are the inner arch repair panels available to buy?
Hi Dave, all the available panels can be found in our website shop www.themx5restorer.co.uk
In case you missed it, they used an outer arch to make that inner panel. We would love an inner arch repair panel tho.
Nice one lads..... At 20:00 the underside, i thought the panel went down also, aNd not just spotted on innersill?

How much does this sort of a job cost roughly? I've got a mk1 merlot in need of some tlc!
Awesome! Thanks guys
Our pleasure!
Where can i buy the plate parts you use for fixing the rost regards Bruno denmark
We sell all the available panels on our website www.themx5restorer.co.uk
How do you make that inner panel?
Why are mk1 & mk2 so prone to rust?
Shite metal...or shite undercoat/seal etc??
I am pretty dissapointed for my Mk1 after seeing how well you know these cars, since I do not think anyone would do it with so much love as you do for these cars around my area. I am realy afraid that if I take it to a body shopn, they would just make it worse.
Bring it to us :)
What’s the costs for that on both sides please?
It really varies, so it’s best to email us pictures for an estimate
Where are you guys based? :)
South east UK, check out our website www.themx5restorer.co.uk
Hey i did wanna see the finished car. Lol
