  • How to Flush Out a Yamaha 4 Stroke Outboard: I wanted to make to quick video just showing you how the dealer showed me how to flush saltwater out of my Yamaha 2014 150hp 4 stroke outboard motor. I when I got ready to come back home or once I got home and are going to put the boat up for a little while. I have the 2014 Sea Hunt 211 Ultra boat that take to the coast and do a lot of inshore and nearshore fishing and a lot of summer cruising out of. I hope this video will help you especially new boat owners with flushing out a 4 stroke Yamaha outboard motor. If your motor does not have this hose to flush out your motor you may need to use the muffs, but I would contact your boat dealer or boat marine specialist to be sure you are flushing your motor out correctly.
Here is a video of my boat and an overview of it:

I see a lot of comments here that this method does not flush the entire motor. According to Yamaha it will. There are small bypass holes at the thermostats that will allow flushing of the entire motor. No need to run the engine. They recommend running the water for at least 10 minutes.

Thank you so much for this clarification!! I feel much better about flushing my motor this way now. By a lot of the comments and even though the dealer told me to do it this way I was still feeling uneasy because I was not flushing it correctly. I usually let it flush this way for 15 to 20 mins actually. Thank you I really appreciate it!! 😃

From what I understand the thermostat has holes that will bypass the water through to "flush the entire system".

Just tip #2 According to my dealer, if you do this with a cold motor the water is not going to flow through the passages that have the T-Stats Closed on them. You'll get most of the engine, but not all of it. It's best to either warm up the motor first or better yet (which requires muffs) or just flush from muffs and run it if you use your boat in saltwater. Also a good desalting solutions from an injector kit and muffs will clean better, in less time, and leave a protective coating on the interior of the motor.

Is it really necessary to put on the muffs on a 4 stroke after connecting the garden hose? As I've already indicated above, after I connect the garden hose to my 2006 4 stroke Yamaha, I also turn on the engine and let it run in neutral for 10 minutes. Then I turn of the engine, let the water flush for another 5 minutes. Am I harming anything by doing so? Would appreciate your comments. Thanks in advance.

This is a good way to flush your motor in a pinch or if kept on a lift. But it does not flush the entire motor. The Thermostat is closed when the motors off and water can not flow past it.
It is much better to flush with muffs. Crank the motor while flushing and let it come up to normal operating temperature so the thermostat opens. This ensures the entire cooling passage gets flushed.

Yeah, I don't think I would try to take a bass boat to the coast either. I see some doing it but I just don't think I would. The water is just to rough for fishing with all the bigger boats that come by you, heck I about get thrown out of my boat sometimes by their wakes. Some of those big boats can make a 3 ft wake easy.

Man if you only knew. Loudon which is the lake fed directly by the Tennessee River is home to all the rich Tennessee alumni and Im not kidding there are cruisers that are deigned for salt water 40-50ft long. Make sure to flush it with Salt Away if you're in salt water. It removes the salt much better than regular H2O and provides corrosion protection. You flush for a couple minutes with regular H2O then Salt Away for another minute or so. Do not flush again with H2O after applying Salt Away because of the corrosion protection from Salt Away.

    Got a question
I have a Yamaha 4 stroke. Top flush also. Ear muffs won’t work since I’m on a well . Not enough pressure from the well to push through the motor so I just use top flush. I do realize the Thermostat won’t open without the engine running for the top flush so I bought a flush bag. Flush bag works good but it’s a pain to fill.
My question is if I remove the thermostat while using the top flush would that flush the whole system ?
Also I use saltaway but keep in mind if you flush using top flush only the the thermostat will gum up so keep it clean....
Great motor. Always keep the VST filter drained for water if using ethonal based fuel. Damn water phase separation will kill the engine.

Never run a Yamaha on ear muffs longer then 5 mins you will melt the water pump housing. Get a bucket and fill it with water make sure the water is above the cavitation plate. And yes a true flush is to run it on fresh water so the t stats open. I'm a yami tech so take my advice we have so many customers come in with smoked housing cuz they run it on muffs too long

Are you sure that they were running it with water running through the ear muffs? The engine should run indefinitely if properly running water through the system. I will bet they didn't line up the muffs with the ports or lied and were running with engine out of the water and dint want to admit it.
