Hi. I 'm trying to learn how to do some gold leaf numbers over my transom in Brooklyn. I have the free time these days, so I thought I'd give it a try. Could you do a video about that?
I have trying to learn this technique after watching your video. My asphaltum varnish always comes of when removing the excess leaf with the steel wool. Any recommendations on what to do? I feel like I’ve been letting it dry long enough. Is there a way to thin the asphaltum to make it easier to paint with?
You might have to do two coats of asphaltum. You can thin it with mineral spirits. You can also remove the gold leaf with just a damp cotton ball and an abrasive cleaner like bon ami or ajax or something similar. The key with all gold work is to be gentle and take your time
Letterhead sign supply carries it. Alternatively you could paint over the gold leaf with a really durable clear varnish and then try removing the gold. You might have to do a little experimentation to see what works. A marine spar varnish like epifanes, quick dry oil size or some sort of oil based clear would work albeit you'd have to wait a bit longer for it to dry.
tanks for your info! one question outside this video. i cant find a good backup paint for mij gold. i use one shot. but as soon al i try to remove te gold i chip the edges because the oneshot paint is not realy that strong. you got a tip?
Awesome video! Very informative!
Im going to use this to touch up antiques. I have a Northwoods Gold Peach on Green glass. The gold has worn off.
Thank you for this!! This solves the gold leafing riddles I have been having in months ❤️❤️❤️
So interesting
This is so helpful, thank you for putting it together!
Great video, can you do a video on using gold leafing house numbers.
Bless you brother
In Australia we know that method of gilding as "Piano Gilding" as I guess it's how gold lettering was applied to pianos in the old days.
John Crash very cool John.
thanks for the infos man!
Thanks and Enjoy!
Thanks, that was nice 👍🏻

I'm struggling to get hold of back up black in the UK. Can you please point me in the right direction? Thanks!
Sure! AS Handover carries it.
Don't touch your gift! Nothing personal about YOU, thanks for sharing your technique. (what's a gelatin diamond?)
Gelatin can come in sheets and these sheets are divided into diamonds
Do you use the same process for window signs?
It's a similar process but different in a lot of ways. Mainly that there isn't a removal of the asphaltum or paint layer.
Hey! Thanks for the tutorial, what can I use If I cant find the asphaltum to write the name?

18MMer don't use one shot. use either letterhead sign supply back up black or nazdar fast dry enamel
Hi friend, i am in vietnam, if you only use gelatine with hot water then the gold will fall out, hope you reply, wish you good health
Tuan Tuananh try 1 diamond of bakers gelatin to 1 pint of warm water. let it dissolve over a half hour and swirl it around
Tuan Tuananh bạn làm thành công chưa. Bạn mua nhựa đường ở đâu z. Hay nhựa đường mà ngta hay nấu ngoài đường cũng dc ?
Can it be a permanant
What is the glue, is it just water?
water and gelatine i think. BUt you gotta heat the water and disolve the gelatine in it. And you do not need much gelatine. Try it out, it´s way cool!
can you use this type of technique to get the mirrored effect of the gold leaf on plastic?
or is there a gold foil that i can buy thats already mirrored?
You could try it, but plastic would likely scratch in the gold removal process
Nice video I would love to goldleaf the Apple logo on the back of my iPhone
