- 2010 ATP Paris Interview with Roger Federer Showing His Multi-language Skills, switching from English, Swiss-German and French during the interview, Federer talked about his launguage skills and what other lanuguages he would like to learn such as Chinese and Swedish, as well as Italian.
the interviewer is equally as impressive...
no, his swissgerman sucks xD
@@nyChannel09 cry
although it's only 2 mins long, this was the dopest interview I've ever seen.
Tin Man you have so much to live, son
As a sports fan, and as a language fan, I love this guy.
Whoa. I wish I could speak 3 languages so fluently. peRFect.
+Ricardo Prado it's very easy, if you start from childhood, I grew up learning 5 languages simultaneously, then I also learned French in school and Italian from TV.
Federer can speak in 4
I do and It's fun :D
@@saidel8565 :D
This is the embodiment of a celebrity. Extremely skillful and smart.
It's amazing how he's completely fluent in all three languages. I speak 3 languages as well, but my third, French, is my weakest even though I can understand what they were saying, I would be much happier reading it or writing it lol. Anyway, I think the Dutch and Swiss people are more often multilingual, and if I had a choice I'd live in those countries for a couple years to pick up some more languages.
it is not hard to speak 3 languages
I can speak 4 languages fluently
arabic : mother language
French German and English
Breaking News ! after winning his 47th grand chelem, federer learned chinese in 1 hour.
😂😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
what cant this guy do??
+Nathan Ramos Speak Spanish
+Corvux IX he doesn't speak it fluently but I think I've heard that he can actually understand the language a little
+Nathan Ramos keep a straight face while listening to Spanish
He cannot lose
Win clean.
2:00 Lmao flashback to 2005 Toronto where he yelled “shiat!” after missing a forehand.
I speak 5 languages, Dutch, German, English, Croatian and French and my mother language is Dutch and German but I lived in France and that's why I speak French. I learned Croatian by my grandmother.
It's funny because sometimes I mix all 5 languages in one xD It's really awesome to speak so many languages :)
Have a nice day.
Nederland de gekste
weet ikniet Wenger out
So if u speak Croatian, u will be able to speak and understand Serbian, Bosnian and little bit of Macedonian language
This is pretty common for people who live around the Basel area (like Federer). My kids speak English, German (both “high” & Swiss German) as mother tongues and one also speaks French, Spanish (both fluently) and Italian while the other is an intermediate in French and between Beginner and intermediate in Japanese.
Yea, Federer is normal.😂😂😂😂 i bet you idolize djokovic.
I'm Austrian and understand all these languages, but speak only German, English and French. But I understand Swiss German, it's the cutest when he speaks it!
Some people appear so quick to discount Federer's Swiss German dialect. Yet most Hochdeutsch-speaking Germans find it easier to speak English in Switzerland, as they find it difficult to understand the "dialect". However, Roger speaks High German as well. And often has to speak in all 4 during his post-match pressers.
Yes, I have one thing in common with RF. I also studied Chinese for an hour and had to quit. :)
Can this man get any more classier?
He is from Swiss where Italian, German , French and English are regular languages. Djoković is from Serbia where is Serbian regular language and he speak five languages
@@worldtube7425you are smart if you think a swiss borns with 4 languages in his mind.😂😂😂😂😂 you have to learn same number of words as an person who is from another country. Djokovic can speak 2 languages at great level, Federer speaks 4 at great level. Only retards think djokovic can speak 11 languages.😂😂😂😂😂 he knows 20 words in every language and his retarded fans think he is a pro.
What I find incredible is how Federer changes form German to French to English and then back to German without being being given a cue.😳😯😊
it is not pute german but it is swiss-german which has nothing to do with german and we do not understand any word in Germany
@@jalilessanaa3920 he speaks both swiss -german and standard german
er isch mega härzig when he speaks foreign languages, particulièrement sa prononciation en français isch scho unglaubli guet unter de dütschschwizer:P
Lehre ihm Chinesisch :)
Also how gently he opposed the question interviewer asked about (what language is best for swearing)
And Roger’s like they are all bad in every language.
Truly a gentleman ❤
Imagine Federer speaking Chinese
The MathemaPigeon seconded. I’m fluent and listened when he spoke at the Shanghai Masters- his accent was surprisingly good for a foreigner. often those who study for years still struggle with the accent and tones. roger is a very talented linguist
This is a great interview.
Who's a clever boy!!!!!! You sound fab in any language Roger!!!!
Gracias, Danke schon, merci, thank you Grazie..
Il avait l'air de lire ses notes en prononçant les phrases en allemand, il doit pas être très à l'aise.
I speak six languages, and I would like to learn German too, it's an amazing language !!
Roger sounds like he's speaking german when he's speaking french
he improves very well in French since 2009!!!!
That's what I thought watching this. I thought he did speak French from his early kid years but he learned allong the way.
@@tomyjusten3867 in switzerland you start learning a second national language in 5th grade (with 11) since he grew up in a swiss-german speaking canton, french is usually the language you learn in school (nowadays they start english in 2nd grade and french in 5th)
Darn,Swiss German. I understand perfectly the German-German =D the Austrian, but man every time I hear the Swiss accent I initially think it's French. *sigh*
See, the Swiss German is not really a German, because the phrases are constructed differently, the words differ as well and the pronunciation. Even for the Germans from the North it's hard to understand it if they are not used to it (The south uses similar words and sometimes sound, so it's easier to guess)
@@Schneeeulenwetter Yeah thats right, south-western germans (swabians) are linguistically related to the swiss-german language (both are alemannic dialects). There are similarities like in the diminutive: (Man/Mann) regular: Männchen, s-g: Männli, swabian: Männle. North germans struggle more with s-g but they also can't tell the difference between a bavarian and a swabian so :D
@@Schneeeulenwetter How much is the difference between German languange through the country? For example North and the South? I heard also that northern Germans find it difficulty to speak to Austrian occasionally.
@@tihomiraleksic9926 every german, austrian and swiss german speaking swiss(switzerland has 4 national languages) can speak high german. High german (standard german) is the language to choose when you speak with someone from another german speaking country
@@tihomiraleksic9926 in whole germany there are no real german dialects spoken anymore. Except Bavaria south germany. In some smaller towns they still speak their bavarian german dialect. But its not that far from standart german. Once you get used to it u can understand it normally. Austrian german is almost like bavarian german but they use some different words and the pronounciation is also a little different from bavarian german. Im from west germany and after some months i could understand and even speak a little austrian german. But in some austrian villages their dialect is so far away from standart german that its very hard to understand. Swiss german and Luxemburg german are by far the most difficult dialects and are far away from standart german. Especially Luxemburg german is almost considered an own language. Swiss german is hard to understand too for a standart german speaker but within 1-2 years you will be able to understand them too. You just have to live in switzerland and talk with the swiss germans. In switzerland there are some swiss german classes for foreigners and germans that want to learn it in oder to integrate into the society more.
Adorei o suiço alemão. Esse é o cara.
awesome! I've wanted to ask him those questions for so long!! Thank you :-)
Deep bow. Suisse guys, speaking 3-4 languages, that’s more than awesome!
3 languages? You can t count but you say Federer is normal when he knows so many languages.
thanks for the English version of the vid!! he is so very talented :)
hahaha the sound he makes at 1:53 always cracks me up!
I'm a huge fan of Roger but to be fair to my fellow swiss most of us speak at least 3 languages: usually german (and swiss german of course) french and english sometimes also italian relatively fluently... ( we kinda have to ). It's not that impressive when everyone around you does it. So i have a fascination with the anglo-saxon world where u can travel far and always speak english: that must be brilliant ! Plus when you travel to europe you don't even have to bother since everybody understands it ( well mostly)
I speak exactly the same languages : schwiizerdütsch from birth, german from school/tv/reading, french because i live in France right now and English thanks to teachings, trips to english-speaking countrys and of course US movies & series (best english teachers ever!).
Funny is that although we speak the same languages we use completely different dialects :
- French -> He : Western Swiss French; me : Southern France french (NOT occitan)
- German -> He : Zürich or Luzern swiss german; me : Bern swiss german
This region of the world (the alps and it's surroundings) is completely fucked up when it comes to languages and local dialects :D
TwoFistsOneHalleluja Schwyzertütsch sounds fucking aweful, no offense! It's like somebody is throwing up german. It doesn't sound refined nor classy...
zimThuet That could be true, all I am saying is so far the types of Schwyzertütsch sounds really hard to understand.
Admitted it's not my first language so I am not immersed with the German language but when people speak basic german I have little to no issue to understand whereas with Swiss German I really need to focus and listen and think to understand what that person is trying to state... =/
(It might be just me who's just slow in understanding it)
zimThuet "It sounds fucking aweful" doesn't necessarily negate "it's hard to understand".
You can have both and in this case it's applicable... Most Germans I know look down upon Schwyzertütsch.
zimThuet No it doesn't if you ask me. Swiss German really sounds weird and very difficult to understand for anyone who wants to learn/is learning/is speaking German.
The pronunciation is totally out of sync. It doesn't bother me though, it's for formal occasions that they need to make this effort and leave the slang at home.
It reminds me a little bit of Canadian French, but not that extreme. No offence to the Swiss though in any way.
zimThuet Lol I didn't need to read your tantrum, child! Welcome to the internet, where people state their opinion!
It's not so weird in Europe. Catalans speak catalan, spanish, some of them English and French (due to boarder proximity). Most Belgians speak 3 languages as well.
Only the Flemish Belgians speak 3 languages. The walloons dont speak Flemish because they didnt grew up with 2 languages.
Sure
That's only theory. Most wallon-belgians don't speak flemish/dutch; most swiss germans couldn't speak french to save their lifes; some catalans don't even speak spanish.
Andreu Orte The spanish people can't even speak their own language.
Alle nederlandstaligen spreken frans en geen franstalige nederlands ? Da's een goeie :-D
It definitely depends on how you grow up! I am very jealous! I have grown up in Australia and unless your parents speak a second language at home, most Aussies are monolingual, myself included. I really wish I could speak another language...and now I am grown up, it is up to me to transfer the words "I wish" to "I can". You see, at home, some members of my family consider learning other languages as a waste of time...so I definitely wasn't encouraged as a child.
Wow! The first monolingual person on RUclips. Respect!
our Rog is such a nice fella...
nobody remembers how good the reporter also is
Damn he has so german/ swissgerman accent when he speaks english thats impressive!
es un maestro roger es un icono mundial y un modelo a seguir
a aprender todos estos idiomas es muy hábil y muestra un gran interés
bonito
French, English, Swiss German, Slovak, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, would like to learn Swedish,
i think german in general is his mother tounge of course when he speaks german you notice he is swiss but he learns to read normal german in school so it is kinda tricky ..they read and write german but speak in swiss -german
He's modest, Schweizerdeutsch has some great curses
He really speaks well French. But German is his real mother tongue
*swiss german :)
OMG ! Roger a legend , handsome , smart... (y)
I wish he really answered his favorite language to swear in. We know it's English. It's straight to the point, clear as can be.
That's real. How many times has he sweared in english, in the heat of a tough match. In USO 2009 final, for example: "don't f***ing tell me to be quiet!"
@GoFedererWoo South of Germany in Baden-Württemberg (Stuttgart, Karlsruhe), natives certainly understand 95%. Germans from up North, like Berlin or Hamburg, usully understand almost nothing and would have to get used to it. Picture me having to fully understand Dutch. The language, strictly speaking, is called Allemannic, it's name derives from the ancient Germanic alliance of tribes known as the Alamanni. Spoken in Alsace (F), Baden-W. (D), Lichtenstein, Voralberg (A) an in major parts of (CH).
I am fluent in English and Romanian..
I would like to learn Spanish, French, German, and Italian and Portuguese. We will see
respect
I can speak 5 languages myself learning only 1 extra with 4 being default. It all depends on where you live and how often you interact with foreigners. I speak French, English, Arabic, Kreole and Russian (the one I learned).
You don t speak at federers level
I speak Chinese, french et anglais...
Legend
Djoković speak Serbian, English, Italian, French, and little German
Impressive!
Impressive....
what a boss!!!!
No, Roger speaks 4 languages: Swiss German, German, French, and English.
He learned French last when he was 13.
Top guy
Here and swedish is translated secrets of tennis
merci, j'avait beaucoup des erreurs.
Not relevant to tennis. But a very good different kind of interview
@ulizinho someone said he didn't speak standard German.
Ich liebe Wasser.
He can also quite easily switch off his Swiss dialect and speak „normal German“ which is a lot different
But a translate this into English down below in the comments section please I need a translation
Portuguese, English, Spanish
@sultanabran1 It's Rhaeto-Romanic (Rumantsch Grischun). It's a latin language.
so geillll
German, English, French, Italian, dutch?, spanish?, slovak? , czech?, polish?, which one does mirka speak
@federerbestclass
He speaks 3 languages! :)
@oliversenord Similar? Haha not really, I think Dutch comes closest to German/Swiss-German, although the sound is very different as well
His wikipedia page says that he knows some Swedish. How come? He couldn't have learnt it only from Stefan Edberg could he?
Peter Lundgren was his coach in the early 2000s.
English and Syriac here. Spanish seems easy in comparison.
+Ou8y2k2 Oh no my friend, spanish is NOT easy. I'm a native spanish speaker myself and I have troubles with this language, as well as most spanish speakers. It's a nice sounding language though ^^
Where does he get his energy from?
@federerbestclass what's the 4th langue? Swiss German, French, English and ........?
Can germans understand Roger speaking in swiss-german??
and i'm barely can manage my tongue language hhhhhhhh which i think it's the hardest.
Not to mention that depending on where you live exactly other people that speak the same language might not understand you.
I'm refering to people in Maghreb and people in the middle east both speaking arab but with such strong differences in dialects that they can barely understand each other.
So classy and hot! I hope his kids are as multi lingual as him!
French, German, English, Italian,
Slovak? Dutch?
I may not speak as many languages as him but my tennis is way better
Damn I speak english spanish french and german but even though that am not even close to his intelligence. ( en cuanto a idiomas claro está)
Chinese is very diffcult to learn just because it's a completely language system...so I'm quite sure even Fed can't master this one!
I know right but the opposite would be true for the Chinese. They'd find it equally hard to learn German if they haven't mastered another Germanic language already, but it'd be relatively easier for Chinese people to learn Korean and Japanese which can be a perk for Chinese native speakers.
The Chinese languages are completely unrelated to Korean and Japanese.
Barchueetadonai That's not true. Japanese has kanji in it. Kanji are Chinese characters (the other two writing systems are hiragana and katakana). Although I don't know Japanese I'm able to guess the meaning of the kanji even though I'm unsure of its pronunciation as I come from a Chinese speaking background.
Wang On Yuen well Chinese is my first language, and for us,Korean and Japanese are just different languages,I would say English is much more easier, and I kind of admire you guys who can speak multiple languages,I can only speak Chinese and English
Wang On Yuen I think there might be some similarities, but English is a bit easier for me to learn
@federerbestclass mmm i think its only 3...german-french and english
i speak four languages and i really really want to learn dutch (holland) :(
zeyad gardner why dutch?
zeyad gardner why dutch?
Can I use this video for a presentation?
@DuchDoby Nadal speaks four languages himself, as well as some French and Italian. He's a humble person though and doesn't go about puffing himself up like Roger does.
Rigolo didn't mean "funny" in that context, I think the subtitle was wrong. I don't think he said he found Swedish funny.
En quelque sorte
@Rafathaman94 I love circular reasoning
It's really not that impressive being able to speak 3 languages especially if youre from switzerland. In fact I'd bet most educated swiss people speak those three languages no problem. I've studied with a handful of people who can speak 3, 4, or 5 languages. It's very common in europe
Joel Mais I’m half Swiss and I grew up there, I speak 5 languages, pretty normal, especially as My first language (Romansch is a dying one, therefor I learned all the other official languages of Switzerland: French, High German and Italian (my Italian is very weak) then I also speak the regional Swiss German dialect, and English) very normal for Swiss people to just grow op knowing different languages
@@muppetm1999 ich würd so gern rumantsch chönne😍 s tönt mega schön und lose au villi lieder uf rätoromanisch😍😍
I want to see Nadal speak like this :D
He speaks seven languages
Smart
Sexy

He could part the red sea if he so desired.
0:24 didn't he say is French is worse, not that he learned it last?
No the subtitles are correct :)
He speaks better then the English ppl
Answer he didn’t want to give: He swears in English.
@stickleyroad :D Nadal is smart? ROFL
Show video where Nadal speaks 4 languages.
Chinese is not a language it is a family of languages
Roger! You should learn slovak!
