When this was first played on radio... It was on the B.B.C station... But Zoe ball never listen to it before she played it and this is the version she played at 3 o'clock in the day...
@@NellyCelephant-f7eMaybe - but the BBC did show the uncensored version of China Girl on one occasion, because I saw it. Nothing too awful - this version just had the China girl topless. But at the time it was a big deal.
And the Sunday sun breaks my heart everytime. And this version is what they originally wrote, its meaning is so much clearer and sharper than the "have me" version. It changes the meaning of the whole song, it's live for now, turn away from suburban boredom, which is much better and truer than choose me over her.
Lyrics in the classic British tradition of The Kinks, Small Faces etc etc. Melody that puts you in a happy place and lyrics that stab you straight in the heart. Fantastic.
@@randybackgammon890 Thank you for commenting on a 8 year old comment! My point was not the swearing - but the whole mood of the song. Happy tune vs cynical lyrics. Have a great weekend!
going back many years my god daughter who was 4 when this came on the radio sang the original lyrics to her mums horror and to my total amusement, still love her to bits
Me too, I was pretty young maybe 8? It came on my mum's radio alarm clock around 6am. I also remember vividly getting cussed for singing "rude made-up lyrics". She still doesn't believe me, to this day, that this version exists, or that it ever played on the radio. I now have proof. Or at the very least proof it exists. Yaaaaay, nearly 15 years on I can finally say I wasn't hearing things and I can get a "I was wrong" from the mother.
I think this version brings a new depth of meaning to the song. It’s completely against settling down and having a full relationship with ups and down in favour of just having the sex!
I was looking for this quite long. All I knew was "San Francisco bay" and "sun" and that didn't seem enough :) I really like that song, it's calming and beautiful at the same time!
I remember Terry Wogan playing this on Radio 2; of course it was the radio edit version, but during the intro he said to (I think it was) John Bruce, who was cohosting with him at the time “you do realize, if this is the album version, we’re dead”.
My mate has this album but he'd never listened to it properly, anyway one day we were chilling in his room and he put it on and when we heard the chorus we were like'woah owah woah owah...woah...woah....where's my batman glass?' Lol, but nah seriously we were like 'hang on rewind that' lol
From the time when such words weren't used in songs because it was one of the golden ages of music. I will say this is the only time where I find the "clean" lyrics are better than the original at 0:50 "She'll grab your Sandra Bullocks" sounds funnier to me.
The Beautiful South definitely did their best stuff when Jacqui Abbott was the female vocalist. Some of you people are making me start to feel old talking about your mums and dads listening to this (mind you my eldest daughter is 20)
This song epitomised me about 4 years ago when the guy I once loved was going to get married. Recently found out the git cheated on her, she dumped him and sold the house! I'm now good friends with his ex, happily soon-to-be married to the man of my dreams, and life settled into place. Karma really kicked him in the Sandra Bullocks!
I love people who think I'm a liar. Me and my mate were the ones who caught him out and told his wife. But hey, that's behind me. I have a beautiful boyfriend, two gorgeous babies and a massive network of buddies. Life is good.
Actually no. We were never together. But I was always friends with his wife, when I caught him making out with another woman, I thought it was a duty to my friend to let her know.
What's worse? Being unfaithful to your spouse or being the person who catches you being unfaithful? Found out recently he married said person he was cheating with. Fair play to him, I hope he's happy. I know I am having not seen him in 7 years.
We told his wife at the time because she was our friend and we didn't want her getting hurt. She was the one that did the dumping in the end, it wasn't up to us. Anyway, I don't care any more, I've grown up since then and I've got a happy relationship. Like I said, I havent seen him in 7 years and have no intention of doing so.
Only time where the radio edit is the better version in my opinion. This version just makes her sound like a home-wrecking slag. Pity really. Such a good song.
I mean tbf, that's kinda the point. Nobody should be idolising this behaviour. Nobody wins in this scenario, as eventually it'll fizzle out and then he and she end up with a broken home, debt, divorce, upset kids etc.
This is just the album song dubbed onto the original release video, as it wasn't made with an uncensored version. Though I will say there is an improvement in the "clean" version and that is at 0:50 as it is funnier and adds to it.
Since i am listening to this on Christmas day. I akways though they should done clean version of fairytale of new york. Not because the current version us bad just because they could.
This song goes out to robbie williams !!!!!!!! Dnt marry her tomo have meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee !!!!!!!!! Lol XXX Love u always Robbie!!!!! XXXXXXXXXXXXXX
It would be helpful to be able to read the original lyrics. I struggle to hear much controversy in this version. I love the song but the phrase where she sings " dont marry her, have me" doesn't really scan. It should be dont marry her, marry me.😊
couldnt help but feel though after the brilliance that was the Miaow album that this somehow had got a bit formulaic and lazy and that Heaton had somehow lost his way. I still feel that way about Blue Is The Colour. Always loved Miaow, 0898, Welcome To The Beautiful South but this one..... nah, couldnt quite get into it.
WHEN THIS SONG FIRST AIRED, I ENJOYED THE ENTIRE SONG, WHEN I BOUGHT THE TAPE, THIS VERSION WAS ON, I COULD NOT BELIEVE MY EARS, THERES SOMTHING VERY EROTIC IN BEAUTIFULL GIRLS USING EXPLICIT LANGAUGE IN A CONVERSATIONAL WAY, 'THE ORIGONAL 10' BO-DERECK DID IT IN THE FILM '10' AND CUDDLY-DUDDLY DID A DOUBLE TAKE
I remember Terry Wogan accidentally on purpose airing this on radio 2 years ago. Caused a bit of a stir amongst the what we now know as the woke brigade. God bless EL TEL.❤
Difficult for him to have played it 2 years ago when he died in 2016. Also, depending on what you mean by the "woke brigade", I suspect that those R2 listeners offended by this version were more likely the disgusted of Tunbridge Wells types than the young and trendy types.
It had to be, so it was as commercial as possible. I think Marilyn Manson did that with Beautiful People, singing 'other hater' on the video instead of the original track's 'motherfucker'. Also, 'Sandra Bullocks' has to be the greatest censorship ever!

Bit like the seahorses love is the law then
That is such a great story!
Probably not true as no doubt the record company would have sent out "clean" promo copies so things like that wouldn't happen.
@NellyCelephant-f7e if you get the double gold album and read the sleeve of the cover it say it in that!!!

Haven't heard this one for years, happy memories.
Profound and meaningful lyrics delivered in such hypnotic, yet get purposeful way. Absolute poetry. Jacqui Abbott is still a massive crush.
Since this video suddenly gets daily comments: in which article is it linked? I'm curious =).

Saw that too.
*will* find the right version on YT
Neil Greatorex I don't think another version exists. Just look at the other RUclips-upload of this video (the VH1 Classic-rip).
I may be wrong but I think the original female singer with the Beautiful South was Briana Corrigan
Well, there's one to sing around the fire.
I love when British acts take a crack at recording country songs, especially an original tune. This is, of course, fabulous.
what?? we invented country, it's called folk over here

Yes, what I thought the lyrics were, they actually were.

Because the music video was made with the edited lyrics in mind, there are a good four occasions where Abbot's lips don't match the audio.
