It changes the meaning of the whole song, it's live for now, turn away from suburban boredom, which is much better and truer than choose me over her.
Lyrics in the classic British tradition of The Kinks, Small Faces etc etc. Melody that puts you in a happy place and lyrics that stab you straight in the heart. Fantastic.

It would be helpful to be able to read the original lyrics. I struggle to hear much controversy in this version. I love the song but the phrase where she sings " dont marry her, have me" doesn't really scan. It should be dont marry her, marry me.😊
couldnt help but feel though after the brilliance that was the Miaow album that this somehow had got a bit formulaic and lazy and that Heaton had somehow lost his way. I still feel that way about Blue Is The Colour. Always loved Miaow, 0898, Welcome To The Beautiful South but this one..... nah, couldnt quite get into it.

Difficult for him to have played it 2 years ago when he died in 2016. Also, depending on what you mean by the "woke brigade", I suspect that those R2 listeners offended by this version were more likely the disgusted of Tunbridge Wells types than the young and trendy types.
It had to be, so it was as commercial as possible. I think Marilyn Manson did that with Beautiful People, singing 'other hater' on the video instead of the original track's 'motherfucker'. Also, 'Sandra Bullocks' has to be the greatest censorship ever!
