It is so hard to find good content on this lens, and Meike lenses in general, that I've now watched this review 6 or 8 times, lol. Great job reviewing the lens, and it combos really nicely with your Alexa. Really appreciate you taking the time to do this. I noticed you got the 75 as well. I currently own the 35mm S35, and really love it, and was thinking of completing the set, starting with the 25. But I would love to see a video on the 75 and hear your thoughts on it, and see your work with it. Subscribed.
Thanks bro, I want to do a review of the full set. Maybe compare them to Zeiss CP3. I am using the set on a feature ATM so maybe I can share some footage from that too. I think the entire set is very consistent.
@@renaissancedigital5730 what are some of the things keeping you from the red Komodo ? One of my concerns with the arri alexa classic is the size, is it possible to film as a 1 man band ? I’m used to being my own DP as an independent filmmaker, thank you for your insight :)
@@AaronCabreroJr Honestly if you are truly a one man band I would say get the Komodo. The thing holding me back is the image, it's not an Alexa. It's about 12 stops of dynamic range vs 14 on an Alexa. Black shading to get an optimal image is also a pain. The Komodo is almost so small that its a pain to rig up, espiecally with your touch screen controls being on the top of the camera. That said the Komodo like ARRI does see very deep into the shadows, even if it gets noisy the info is all there. The noise is also not the bad DSLR camera kind. For me the Komodo dynamic range is good enough. Some clipped highlights or noisy shadows don't really bother me. The really low power draw is a huge appeal. 23 wh draw vs 80 on the Alexa. That means smaller batteries and less of them. I carry 6 gold mounts with me for the Alexa, that is a big heavy pelican in itself. I'd say the Komodo color is very close to ARRI. That along with its great codec options (redraw and prores) make it a really solid option. I do also wish it had higher framerates in 4k. Having full sensor 120p HD on the Classic is quite nice.
Hey, really nice images and good to get your opinion on these lenses. I actually have the whole current S35 set of the Meike lenses and am using these on the Sony F35. They work like a charm.
@@renaissancedigital5730 Hey, thx for checking. I definitely like the image quality. It has its own character and global shutter is pretty cool. From what I can see from other YT videos compared to the Alexa it will lack dynamic range and color fidelity when over or under exposed. It's not the most clean image compared to more modern cameras but the color range and motion cadence still beats many modern cameras. It's hard to actually recommend it because it's clunky and not the easiest to rig out. For myself as camera enthusiast I love it though and it's fairly straight forward to use but still has a deep level of customization. It will be a keeper for myself, very unique camera. Be sure to check out the manuals and other videos for some of the gotchas. Cheers
@@bobtronic73 I kind of like noisy images and tbh dynamic range is a bit overrated. The nice thing about it is despite the sort of clunky body its lighter than an Alexa Classic and has less power draw. Still everyone loves ARRI and most don't know much about the F35. I'll own it one day though haha. You should post some footage you have got from it.
Hey! Nice review thanks! What‘s your coloring workflow? I seem to get a different image and colors out of my classic and was wondering why (i assume it‘s not the lens but maybe i‘m wrong?)
What lenses do you use? The S35 Arri cameras are known for their green tint. I usually shoot with a -1 to -3 tint to compensate for this. Some people like the green tint though. For color I usually just use the ARRI rec709 lut. On a separate note/color panel above that I use curves to adjust the exposure. I don't really play with color too much outside of correction.
@@renaissancedigital5730 Thanks for the reply! sorry, it took me a while.. weird, I'm also using the the standard Arri Lut and then play a little with the curves but objectively i thought your contrasts were much harsher and colors (on your cat in front of the window) way off. I've used a cheap vintage m42 screwmount lens to test, and some cooke s2's. The cookes of course brought their own flattering image into the equasion...
@@renaissancedigital5730 also thanks so much for the video! There are almost no good tests with the cheap lenses like Irix and mike. This was exactly what i was looking for ^^
@@juranicolas7129 That part with the cat by the window was shot at 3200k I think, which is why its so cool in temp. I often shoot in dark situations, my parents home is quite dark. Maybe that is where the extra contrast is coming from.
Kind of depends on the type of work you do. For a while I was in situations where I was frequently was using PL lenses. I didn't want to switch out the mount to EF because it is a hassle with the Alexa. Lately I have been shooting features with my own gear. I ended up trading my PL Meikes for EF mount ones. Reason being is that I often like to use vintage 35mm stills lenses. Those type of lenses can rarely be adapted to PL.

I love my Classic, but I have yet to shoot a feature with it. It is hard to argue against the FX6. E-ND, Full frame sensor, 4k up to 120fps no crop, Raw output, low rolling shutter. That said the Alexa Classic is just the most cinematic thing you can get in the price that it's sitting at used. The Sony F35 is also a pretty sweet option. Both are heavy.
I purchased a Meike 25mm, and along with my Helios 44-2, is my go-to lens for video shoots.
Excellent lens. L
Amazing image from this old camera! Please make more footage with the Classic ! 🙏
Thanks for this! I have the Classic Plus and literally have been waiting for the Meike 25m...This helps a lot.
Yeah man it's a nice set. The 18mm they are putting out in July is gonna really round out the set.
Thanks for this. It's really helpful.
great lens and great footage as usual, deserve a thumb up!
I was shortlisting this lens but pulled the trigger after learning no surprises btw the Ts. Cheers

Great review! I’m curious if you still plan to do the Red Komodo vs Arri alexa classic review? I’m really torn between the 2 cameras 🎥
I shot a video on it. I just need to edit it! I've still been considering the Komodo but there are still lots of things keeping me from it.

Yeah they are really great for the price. I am satisfied with the purchase so far! I do want a set of something vintage tho, trying to decide on that.
How are you liking the F35 by the way. I have strongly considered purchasing one.
