I am pretty handy with repairs and their are plenty of broken Alexa bodies around for pretty cheap that I could source parts from. That said it just depends on your budget for sure.

But that also applies to any camera 😅

It definitely can. I've used a Pocket 4k as a B-cam. As long as you aren't torture testing the dynamic range you'll be fine. The only thing is mixed lighting, hard to match any camera in those conditions. I think that daylight situation was tricky due to the nature of natural light. There was a lot of different color casts going on from colors of different things in the room being bounced around. If you are using more artificial light, such as a really strong light source as your key, pushing right at the subject, it would match better I am sure. If you were to downsample the Raptor to 2k it would probably come really close to the Classic's dynamic range, surpassing it if you count the highlight reconstruction happening in camera. But in terms of big productions the Komodo isn't getting much if any use as an A-cam. But the same can be said for the Alexa Classic. Both still capable cameras though.

Been trying a bunch of the budget options. Meike, Irix, different vintage stills lenses. I am collecting a set of Canon CN-E's right now. I am also interested in the Dulens APO primes though.

The RED Komodo just has less dynamic range than the Alexa Classic or any Alexa. If you shoot 1600 iso on the Komodo you'll still have less highlight retention than the Alexa and you'll also now have noisier shadows because the Komodo isn't really cleaner than the Alexa at 1600. The Raptor XL is 1-2 stops cleaner than the Alexa in the Shadows so with that sensor you'd definitely want to shoot 1600+ for higher dynamic range scenes. The 7 over and 7 under claim with the Alexa is definitely not true in practice. At 800 iso it clips at 6 stops over and I'd not push it past 2 stops under. I'd probably rate the Alexa Classic at 200 ISO if I was trying to get an even over/under balance.

After using the Classic on 8 features this year as the A cam I can comfortably say the Alexa image just gives you something other cameras aren't giving. When you put a camera through its paces you really get to see it in every kind of situation and what its actually capable or not capable of. That said I definitely would not recommend the Classic to most people. I have a friend who owns a GH5 and wants to upgrade. There really is no need for it though. The GH5 can tell an award winning story in the right hands. The C70 and FX6 are probably the best options on the market in terms of overall image and usability in the field.

@@renaissancedigital5730 There is a powergrade called GHAlex by Emotive Color that will 100% match the Color, OLPF and the Gamma of ARRI Alexa. You won't be able to tell both cameras apart except by the DR. Your friend should use that. It will breathe new life into his Lumix

@@renaissancedigital5730 This camera seems like it's best use is in actual film production with a crew. All of it's features become huge assets in that setting. Maybe even music videos if you're really committed. Other than that it might become a nuisance

@@shueibdahir If you like doing a lot either handheld or on sticks its great. Past that support gear gets cumbersome and expensive. It also will take a toll on your body if you don't have assistants, I am definitely feeling it this year lol.

No problem! About to do a follow up to this with a lot of footage from the past year. Going out tomorrow to shoot some test footage against the Red Raptor tomorrow as well.

Why? That kind of thing happens quite literally with nearly everything. Heck, I can build a PC with 12yr old parts that will kick the ass of nearly everything you can buy now, it will do everything faster and better. It just would have a very high original price tag.

It may be 12 years old but the sensor in all the new Arri cameras are exactly the same until the Alexa 35

I usually present to them the large list of films that were shot with the Alexa in 2.8k such as the Avengers. It's hard to argue with that vs using something like a C70 that has no films credits to mention. I have thought about getting an external recorder to do ARRIRAW. The file sizes are huge though and it runs really slow on my editing setup. Most people I shoot for wouldn't actually want to deal with all that.

Kind of depends on the type of work you do. For a while I was in situations where I was frequently was using PL lenses. I didn't want to switch out the mount to EF because it is a hassle with the Alexa. Lately I have been shooting features with my own gear. I ended up trading my PL Meikes for EF mount ones. Reason being is that I often like to use vintage 35mm stills lenses. Those type of lenses can rarely be adapted to PL.

I have the arri classic with a EF adapter and PL. So my cuestion is is there any different in the image. Witch setup did you use in the test

@@pjjackson7358 This test was with PL mount. There is really no difference image wise between EF and PL. Two different ways of accomplishing the same thing.

@@pjjackson7358 Just 2k 24, which is downsampled from the 2.8k full sensor. The Classic only does 2.8k when recording Raw externally. I don't think shooting RAW is worthwhile for me personally.

This is meant to test the cameras dynamic range and color science. All cameras look nice when lit right.

@@renaissancedigital5730 I am still shook i must say and i too buyed into the 16 stops magic. Hearing that its 12 in reality is a little bummer i must say :( Is this legal? I mean its pushing the sales tremendously and it seems to be false

@@PARISONFIRE I believe RED measures the entire patch range which on the Komodo is close to 16 stops. ARRI usually goes by what they consider usable dynamic range which is usually a few stops under the patch range. I do agree with you that the Komodo is a very capable camera. I think something like the Pocket 6k is a better value, but it does have a pretty slow rolling shutter where the Komodo is global shutter. The komodo is also the only global shutter camera on the market which is pretty cool. I also love RF mount.

Yeah to me film is the goal post, and I associate softness with film. Though there is plenty of detail in 35mm film, probably enough to equal digital 4k. All tools at the end of the day, but I do really love the ARRI Alexa image. I might even say I like the S35 Alev3 sensor more than the new Alexa 35. It just has a certain look to it that is so pleasing.

The XT does 3.4k in open gate but doesn't have a 4k uhd option like the Amira. Really the same thing though as the Amira is just putting 3.2k in a 4k container. I guess the only real use for it would be so you can hand it off to a client that is demanding "4k"

Yeah I do think 4k is the sweet spot. But in this price range the Alexa Classic is my favorite option.

The Canon C70 might be a good option. I have always liked Canon's color and it has good auto focus if you don't have a focus puller. They have a nice REC709 profile if you aren't familiar with log.
