Sappy, true. Poor acting, yes. However this movie touched my heart and has remained with me through many years. Even if you find love and feel it's the only one for you, that first love is not to be discarded. You can build on love with cherished memories and there's always that chance you WILL meet again.......if only in Heaven... Romantics must thrive in this cruel world.

It wasn't a great movie, but the music was great. Unfortunately, the personal life of Brooks over shadowed the movie.

This movie reached a level of sappiness that no movie has ever come close to. The shot of Shelly Hack entering the room with that enormous present as he gets up in slow motion , They probably had a sale on toaster ovens at Costco and she had one wrapped up.

This movie touched my heart from the time I first saw it on the big screen while stationed in Germany! I had a huge crush on Shelley Hack after the movie concluded. I owned the soundtrack for years, and have put the movie together on my computer. Thanks to whoever it was that made it available in sections, I am still able to watch it once in a great while. The story of Joe’s tragic last years of his life and death were heartbreaking, as he was such a gifted man.

Does anyone remember the promo for the film? They had a toll free number you could call to see if someone you had loved and lost also wanted to see you again. For me It was love at first sight, I have never experienced anything like it before or since. She broke my heart and the heartache was a constant reminder of the loss. But it wasn't to be and 45 years later I still think of Charlene. And if ever I see you again.

I remember seeing this movie when it came out. One of the most interesting thing was the studio that produced it, set up a phone number if you were seeking to find “the one that got away.” You could call the number provided and leave your name, if “the one that got away” called in and left their name seeking you, they would provide the other person’s contact information so you could get back in touch. Thought it was a interesting way to market a movie.

It does seem that this film was the type that could only be enjoyed by denizens of Manhattan's Upper East Side who shopped at Macy's and Bloomingdale's, strove to be seen among the "Beautiful People" at Studio 54, started each morning with The New York Times, and held a lifetime subscription to New York magazine; so insular did the "plot" of this film come across.

you have great taste...it's gorgeous and should never have been panned by the critics and should have been a huge hit...much better than the film "you light up my life" and i love the music too. joseph brooks was a genius but his great weakness was his hubris...

i have studied joe brooks' life in detail...he got the movie deal with columbia after the success of "you light up my life" and it's really about his life in the most part so he paid $20,000 for the screen test and did well so columbia approved it. shelley was hired sight unseen and i have heard that he wanted her to wear glasses...probably to make them seem more in synch with each other...i have read nothing about ryan o'neal and farrah fawcett being considered much less hired for the film.

+trha2222 I love the music as well. The title song "When I See You Again" was also sung by the late singer Jamie Carr, who sang two songs from "Lords Of Flatbush" from 1974. Even a closing song (showing the credits at the end) can make it memorable for me. Example: the closing song to 1978's "The Driver" released in 1978.

@jennifercorly I think everyone has this story.
It is always the 'idolized' love, perfect in our mind.
'If only', everything would have been different.
    Everything would have been better.
The reality usually doesn't hold up to the fantasy.
When you go back and find your lost lover
it will be revealing about yourself.
    For me it didn't work!
Two strangers trying to rekindle a spark that
    was long gone.
If it was meant to be, it would have happened.

to be fair, i'm sure in the 70s and 80s there were many girls who lined up to audition for him and had no problem with the casting couch concept. he wasn't the only one you know. he only started his strange machinations in 2005, probably after the demise of "in my life" on broadway. he broke up with his then-fiancee liza yanolatos (who was 26) and got into hookers more and cocaine and had his stroke in 2008.

Joseph Brooks' "acting" is what killed this. He just wasn't an actor, at all, and is quite stiff and inscrutable. With an actor in the role with Ms. Hack perhaps the film would have had a chance. It was so sad how his own career ended and how his Son's life went as well. Tragic.

Jamie Carr began recording in the mid 1960's. He recorded many commercial jingles during his career, you will probably recognize his voice from many of those Folgers coffee commerials during the 70's and 80's.

A few of the scenes were all too realistic in that they had all of the tender and akward moments of trying to get reaquainted w/ someone that you knew a long long time ago. Sometimes things work out. Sometimes not,. The ending was like something from an old Frank Capra movie,. Still, very very sweet. Might I also recommend the movie ," Forever Love" w/ Reba McIntyre. Also from 1978, a song by Donna Fargo, "That Was Yesterday". Cheers

Too bad about what happened to Joe Brooks; Creepy? YES. Sad? VERY. At least his beautiful work(esp the music) will continue to live on. I used to think You Light Up My Life was the sappiest movie ever made. But this one seems to make it look like a snuff flick. Hope to be able to see the whole thing some day. Cheers

The crime he committed is the worst and unforgivable. He is a criminal. He will be in hell. A movie is just a movie. A monster

@torgman The rumor was that Shelly needed her glasses to act.
Joe was the director, he insisted that only he could wear cool 70's
    glasses.
Joe gave Shelly a choice, either wear the 'glasses' or 'you'll never
work in Hollywood again. Roddy Piper had to do the same thing
with Carl Weathers in the movie, 'They're Alive"
It worked, she wore the glasses & now you know the rest of the
    story.
Shelly's next acting 'success',was a small role in the King of
Comedy, but she refused to wear glasses.

fntime In regard to Roddy Piper, i'm assuming you are referencing the movie "They Live", with Keith David.

there is indeed a soundtrack...double lp's from columbia i think...there are other songs, like "california" and a long version of "if ever i see you again." i can't remember all of them offhand, but the ones in the clip have the majority. i love the music too! debby boone's albums also covered most of the songs in the film, if you can't find the double lp anywhere. hope that helps!

The music was quite good- and in the hands of another director/actor/producer- who knows what could have happened?
