    The look empress dowager gave in the end to ruyi shows that she knows how tragic her life is about to become of her blind love towards emperor. She could practically see herself in ruyi who doesn't desires power and status rather she wants the love and respect of her husband just like her when she was young and naive like her.
    But she knows anyone who dares to love the emperor is bound to get destroyed completely sooner or later and now all she can do is to wait and watch from front row seat how Ruyi's life is going to jump out of a cliff because of her stupid desire.

In the end, Granny and Emperor were alone on top of the mountain stuck and trapped, Ruyi who had love and just for her people, family, and friends never surrendered her freedom and remained free, even when Wei did everything she could to destroy her. What really break my heart and hate but also love this series is HOW MUCH PURE AND INNOCENT RUYI was portrayed here and that what makes here vurnerable and weak. And one thing is she was blamed and harmed by everyone. I just don't get it why are they looked down on Ula Nara clan like they're the lowest clan during Qing dynasty when in fact Ulanara clan produced many Empresses for the past Emperors? I bet of Ruyi had a strong clan and family like the Fuca, Gao clan she will be praised and feared of. I was really devastated how the Emperor also treated Ruyi as his pawn like he easily blame, imprisoned Ruyi when he knows her since they were kids, he easily punished Ruyi and just tell here its for her own protectiom but AFRAID to punished his other wicked mistresses.my heart really broke for Ruyi and I can't count on how many times i shed tears for this drama. I cannot watched the whole series coz it only makes me depress but still love to watched the clips where Ruyi has her happy times along with consort Yu and their children.

      The Ulanara clan wasn't looked down on, & they were powerful... But Ruyi's aunt (the former empress) had caused scandals, & was almost removed as empress for her crimes (but she ended up being put on house arrest till death). So it's not that the Nara Clan was lowly, but people wanted to distance themselves from it. Especially since Empress Dowager was enemies with the former Empress, & ppl didn't want to make her mad by being close to their clan

      @@lleshanasayurimontano7046 Ruyi is not from a powerful house, and that’s a disadvantage when she steps into the role of the empress. Even though the emperor might say he’s bestowing power upon her, in truth, she has just become more restricted than ever. The emperor needs to balance the power dynamics in the court through the concubines. This is why you see Ruyi being cast aside time and time and time again in favor of pleasing some powerful minister (see Jia Guifei) 😔. When he loved her she was his precious thing to protect, and when he hated her she was his scapegoat.
      Though I have to also admit that a lot of Ruyi’s pain could have been prevented if Qian Long just stepped tf up. 😒

      I don't think Ruyi is innocent and pure. I also don't think she is weak. She's stayed in the palace with the previous Empress since she was little and have seen the backstabbing and scheming done by the mistresses in the harem so I doubt she would have no knowledge of the harem life. Being empathetic doesn't make one weak. She may not scheme as much as the other concubines/consorts but keeping one's morality in check through thick and thin is a feat I doubt most people can do especially in her position. Many of these concubines/consorts started off as pure, innocent and good but slowly warped. In the end, they all paid for what they've done. Even the previous Empress slowly turned from a noble and good wife to a hateful and scheming one.

    • @bluebird41978
      @bluebird41978 2 года назад +2

      The answer is simple: storytelling.
      Everyone depicted here is long dead, so we'll never know what really happened behind closed doors aside from what survived through the Chinese imperial bureaucratic machine. On top of that, no imperial household would keep records of anything that would make the emperor/imperial family lose face, so even if a concubine was actually the biggest asshole in all of Qing, they wouldn't write it down for postherity.
      In short: we have no way to know for sure.
      The author of the book this drama was based upon just tried to "fill in the gaps" in a compelling way to explain the headscratcher that was the Step Empress' fall from grace.
      We do know that she was a favoured concubine - to the point that Qianlong made the other concubines participate and kneel to her enthronement as empress, a first in the Qing dynasty.
      We also know that Qianlong became more reckless as time went on - starting from Empress Xiaoxianchun's death, which really did break him as she was reportedly closer to Yanxi's depiction of her rather than Ruyi's.
      We also know how quick-tempered he became later on, as a result, when someone criticized his favourites - Heshen, the most corrupted official in Chinese history, is a perfect example of that.
      We know that the Step-Empress cut her hair at one point, which could have meant something along the lines of either divorce or cursing the emperor to die. We don't know under what circumstances she did that and why, but we do know Qianlong's reaction in the form of cutting her income, staff and food to the level of a Second Attendant, and naming a long-term Imperial Noble Consort when the empress is still alive. He could have reacted like that because it was outrageous in context, or he may have overreacted like he did whenever Heshen was criticised (read: every official who did that lost his position in the court and was only reinstated after Qianlong died and Jiaqing could fully reign as emperor).
      Of course, some of the characters are villains because any story needs one, but we'll never know who was nice and who wasn't - except for Concubine Dun, because we have surviving records of her killing a servant for a minor mistake. Who knows if the historical Xiaoyichun (Ling) was a full-fledged psychopath or just a decent person who was in the right place at the right time because she did her duty well.

      A-ma (father) and e-niang (mother) are Mandarin phonetic adaptations of Manchu words, so they're not technically Chinese. They're not even part of the same language family. The rulers of Qing dynasty were Manchus, and most of the higher ranked people were bilingual back then in Manchu and Chinese. I'm not sure which language they used more often during Qianlong's reign, but it very likely was a mix of both. Unfortunately, the Manchu language is now nearing extinction, so there's no way for a T.V. show to reproduce the exact linguistic environment, but they do at least use adaptations of Manchu words like these for some common words that were either used in Manchu back then or were already adapted into Han (Mandarin) Chinese for documentation purposes.
